Very beautiful and innovative interpretation ! For the listeners that don't know Biber's Mystery Sonatas, let me give an input : The particularity of the Rosary Sonatas cycle is that, for each sonata, the violin is tuned differently, on scordatura mode (quite common at this period for viola da gamba and lutes where the scores were often written in tablatures, ie indicating not the notes but the positions of fingers on the strings). For the first sonata L'Annonciation, the instrument is tuned in the classical way, in fifths, but in the other sonatas it is tuned in thirds, fourths and octaves, returning to the traditional tuning only with the passacaglia which closes the work. Different tunings are indicated in the text below the title. It is very disturbing for the player, because even if the original score is not written in tablature but as traditional sheet music, you have to play the position of the note, say an A by example... but according to the tuning it will sound F! More : on the 11th sonata, the two middle strings are crossed! Of course all this stuff has mystical and esoteric meanings... related to the 15 stages of the Rosaire of Christ.

This music is so good... And not only the violinist is perfect, but also the entire ensemble of musicians is in perfect harmony. This composer was clearly a genius, it's a shame he's not as well known as Bach, he's at the same level (Baroque Boss)

Sonatas 6-10 are the Sorrowful sonatas, all of them being about the Crucifixion
@Nicole-ww4lg4 жыл бұрын
i think all of them do at least at some point since they are based on the stations of the cross. the passacaglia at the end is a traditional baroque lament that biber wrote to be a contemplation about jesus. i like to play the passacaglia when i need to release my own sadness.

scheepalicious Hello. I found online in a biographical PDF that the label is called "Caro Mitis" although I didn't see this album on their website. It looks like it showcases mainly Russian musicians. It is quite invisible online. Cheers.

Caro Mitis And sadly it seems that instead of commercializing it, they rather put it out of the market altogether

@@MaestroRaro Minasi is one of the world's best baroque violinists. His fluidity and timing are unsurpassed, as is his continuity of tone. He is able to fly with this music, his playing is both spontaneous and precise. There are other great interpretations (Goebel, Lotter, Lautenbach, etc.) but Minasi is in a class of his own.

Let me check the facts: this guy was born in 1600's , but how come he can sound not at all "baroque"?
@rowannieuport39425 жыл бұрын
He developed an expanded skillset for violin, many different tunings, lots of innovative development. The late 17th century was like this in general. The 18th was very much caught up in a more standardized musical expression, which to me always sounds like it lost its blood--it sounds very frivolous to me. Everyone copies the same forms. I like 17th century music and sounds most of all.

This is a subgenre of Baroque called Stylus Fantasticus, as the title suggests, it was a fantastic style haha. You mostly saw it in Austria during the middle baroque, but it did see it also in Northern Italy.
