The Mighty Opeth strikes again! The drop on this track is absolute destruction with a touch of a Black Metal atmospheric overlay. Just a straight marching force of brilliant chaos that Opeth has perfected. I’ve heard a number of different vocalist in the Death Metal genre but Mikael? This man is something else. When he decides to let his alter ego out aka “the grim reaper” just forget it it’s run for the hills time. And don’t be fooled by the Angel he pretends to be with his unbelievable cleans as it’s only a matter of time till the grim reaper shows back up again and taps you on the shoulder Opeth style. And for give me as I don’t know the drummers name on this track as they’ve had a few different drummers but the drums on this track are absolutely phenomenal. Guiding you through the peaks valleys and branches of rivers that Opeth always takes you through. Outstanding

You still have a lot to go on this album My Arms Your Hearse, Blackwater, Watershed, Ghost Reveries and Still Life but finally you did this one and wait for Funeral Portrait, very underrated you'll like it.

I love this album. It's hard to choose between Blackwater Park and My Arms, Your Hearse as my favorite. Each song on My Arms, Your Hearse bleeds into the next one so the album plays like one continuous piece of music. Also, the final lyric of each song is the title of the song that follows it. The last song, Epilogue is one of the most beautiful things Opeth has ever written.

Every time I listen to BWP I say it's the best then I go to MAYH and then I say its the best but then I go to GR and think how good that is, then off to Watershed coupled with Axe's drumming and I say to myself this is the best, then I put on Deliverance and I say it's the best with Martin Lopez's best work and after that Still Life 2nd, CV 3rd, Sorceress 4th and all the rest 5th.

This is my personal favorite Opeth album. Such good atmosphere in this record, it really resonates emotionally, and is still incredibly heavy. It's also a concept album and all the songs flow into each other as they tell its story. You simply must listen to the other tracks from it you've yet to hear.

@@eighteen-naked-cowboys Yeah there was in interview I saw, where he discusses his disdain for some of his earlier released albums as far as the sound. He referred to it as "shit" but then again Michael is quite the funny guy. For me as a Drummer, this album sounds the worst for how the drums sound, it is very raw you are right, raw doesn't always sound good to the ear.

After this track really sunk in it became one of my favorites. The intro is so powerful and that ending with the building guitar is sublime. It hits even harder when you know the lyrics and story of the album. The only problem is it feels much shorter than it is, but I guess that's the mark of a great song.

Ah, man. My Arms, Your Hearse was Opeth's first album of what I consider their "peak death metal" era, when the main lineup solidified around 4 guys who did several albums together that are considered some of Opeth's best still today. Orchid and Morningrise were done with a different songwriting style where the duties for different parts were more shared amongst the band members, and no one person had an authoritative say on stuff. That all changed with MAYH, and Mikael becoming the main songwriter for almost all of Opeth's songs from here on out. Other members make their own contributions to his work in this way, and that's why the sound of the songs on this album is so different compared to the previous albums. I think it's a much more cohesive way of writing music, rather than having one guitarist write a melody and then having the other guitarist just write whatever harmony they can come up with, regardless of whatever the intent was behind the first riff or whatever. So, April Ethereal is maybe my favorite opening track off any Opeth album for this reason, in that it's kind of announcing the new way of Opeth which really still is continuing to be the M.O. when they make music today. This album also has one of my favorite sort of less popular, deeper cuts of Opeth, the second track y'all heard the intro to there, When. This album does a cool thing where not only does each song lead musically into the next song, but the last lyric of every song is the title of the next track. So When ends with the word Madrigal, and so on. Glad y'all enjoyed it! I first heard this stuff in 6th grade and it about blew my gosh darned mind.

3; Mendez joined for Still Life. Mikael plays all the bass on MAYH. I agree; it's the start of the post black metal goldilocks era of Opeth Death metal before Steve Wilsons progged them up.

It was me, peering through the looking-glass. Beyond the embrace of Christ. Like the secret face within the tapestry. Like a bird of prey over the crest. And she was swathed in sorrow, as if born within its mask. Her candlelight snuffed, the icon smiled. Emptiness followed by her wake. I could clasp her in undying love. Within ghostlike rapture the final word was mine. She faced me in awe. 'twas a token of ebony colour. Embodied in faint vapour. Wandering through April's fire. Compelled to grasp and to hold the one that was you. I will endure, hide away. I would outrun the scythe, glaring with failure. It is a mere destiny I thought, a threshold I had crossed before. The rain was waving goodbye, and when the night came the forest folded its branches around me. Something passed by, and I went into a dream. She laughing and weeping at once: "take me away". I don't know how or why, I'll never know WHEN.

Funny you kept saying "When" at the end there. That's the song the ending of this one plays into and it's my all time favorite Opeth song, EVER!!! I've listened to every song they've put out, "When" is still my number one. On second thought, have you two ever considered doing a full album review or some kind of marathon??? Might be interesting. Maybe you could do it live then have it for people to go back and watch the live full album stream!!!
