this is definitely black metal. their first 4 albums are very folky and black metallish, though their most black albums are their first 2. If you want more of this side of Opeth, Advent, In The Mist She Was Standing, Forest of October, Black Rose Immortal or their first song without growls, To Bid You Farewell are good songs from this era.

I honestly don't understand why but Still Life is the growls-era album I listen to least often. Don't get me wrong, whenever I listen to it I do love it but, I don't know, other albums just seem to have more captivating overall atmosphere for me, I guess. And when it comes to just the atmosphere - Watershed all the way.

This song kicks off the still life album. Without spoiling anything else, it tells the beginning of the protagonist’s story as he returns to the village he was banished from to reunite with his lost love Melinda. From this point anything else from the album would be great, Godhead’s Lament is next in the track listing but Moonlapse Vertigo, Serenity Painted Death, Face of Melinda, and White Cluster would all make great reactions from the album as well.

Had never heard of Opeth at the time, but I bought this record randomly at 16 because the art looked interesting and the tracks were really long (they actually had the song lengths on the back of the cd). It was a saturday but I had no plans beyond going to town and browsing cds so I went home and put it in my stereo. For the first few minutes I thought it was on loop or something and was like 'what the fuck is this shit'. When the first scream(s) came in it blew my mind and its since been one of my favourite albums ever. It totally changed my direction in music as well and I ended up learning a load of their songs. A year later I went & saw them on their Ghost Reveries tour with one of my best friends and twice more since then. They really are incredible.

Hell yeah!! As I mentioned earlier on another video; I highly recommend "Hessian Peel", and "Burden" from the 'Watershed' album, considering the backround of the songs! If I'm not mistaken, it's about Mikael Aakerfeldt's (The vocalist and lead guitarist) former ex-girlfirend who commited suicide while recording in the studio. Burden is really emotional, while on the other hand the Hessian Peel is maybe more on the heavier side =) Either way, you cant go wrong!

The sigh of summer upon my return Fifteen alike since I was here Bathed in deep fog, blurring my trail Snuffing the first morning rays Weary from what might have been ages Still calm with my mind at peace Would I prosper or fall, drain the past The lapse of the moment took it's turn I was foul and tainted, devoid of faith Wearing my death-mask at birth The hands of God, decrepit and thin Cold caress and then nothing I was taken away from my plight A treason bestowed to the crowd Branded a Jonah with fevered blood Ungodly freak, defiler Pale touch, writhing in the embers Damp mud burning in my eyes All the faces turned away And all would sneer at my demise Outcast with dogmas forged below Seared and beaten, banished from where I was born No mercy would help me on my way In the pouring rain nothing is the same Vows in ashes I pledge myself to no-one Seethed and spiteful All shudder at the call of my name If you'll bear with me You'll fear of me There is no forgiveness in these eyes For any of you but one Dispel the mist for now Melinda is the reason why I've come She is water drops over the pyre A thistle in my hands Stained and torn, aged and brown Virtuous shell with kindred innocence I awoke from the miasma Passing swiftly through the moor This is here, waters stir And in the distance all that was lost If you'll bear with me You'll fear of me You'd never leave me to A fate with you

This album was written as chapters to an overall story meant to be listened to like an audio movie. So, naturally, it would be cool for you to react to each song off the album in the track order. Thank you for choosing Still Life. This album is very special to me. I was getting tears in my eyes hearing it with you; it has been a while.

And here we may have the best track from the best album of the best band at the absolute peak of perfection. It does not come better and though they gave us several more classic albums afterwards this right here is divine.

I can't remember if you've done anything else from this album, but if you haven't done The Godhead's Lament... you should. This whole album is 🔥 You should also check out something from Katatonia's Brave Murder Day. It's like the Cure, but black metal with Mikael from Opeth doing crazy good vocals. I'd suggest "Brave," "Murder," or my favorite "Rain room." This album needs some love from the reaction community.

This album is probably one of the best albums ever made, there's still so many songs on this album. Considering this is their 4th album, and the 3 before it are amazing, it's safe to say, Opeth has always been great. I'm glad you're getting into their older stuff, especially this album.
