This is Opeth first record, very Black-ish, very adventurous. Mikael Akerfeldt was like 20 and you can already see how revolutionary their music was going to be. Check out the live versions of their first two records in the Roundhouse venue in London, spectacular performances!

Seven milestones... Under a watching autumn eye Contorted trees are spreading forth The message of the wind With frozen hands I rode with the stars With anger the wind blew Giving wings to my stallion Clouds gathered across the moon Blazing the white light Passing the lake I know so well I am near, yet so far away Arrival... I saw her shadow (standing) in the darkness Awaiting me like the night Awaits the day Standing silent smiling at my presence A black candle holds the only light Darkness encloses And the candle seem to expire In her cold, cold hand And as a forlorn soul It will fade away Touching her flesh in this night My blood froze forever Embraced before the dawn A kiss brought total eclipse And she spoke Once and forever I am so cold In mist enrobed the twilight She was standing...

You guys are digging into the raw and dirty side of Opeth lol. I love that you're giving it a shot. I don't think they mastered transitions yet completely until still life, but there are some really nasty riffs on these earlier albums, and some of their best acoustic work. Growers for me. There's definitely a certain atmosphere to them as well. Please check out To Bid You Farewell, I know you guys will love that one.

The best Opeth album. Everything off this is a banger. When you get a chance, go back and relisten to this and concentrate on nothing except the vocals. Mikael at his absolute finest. Nothing comes close to his vocal performance on any other Opeth album.

Thanks for the reaction on this very first track of the first Opeth album, which will remain my favourite Opeth song forever partly for historical reasons. I listened to this album in my youth, and for some reason the ending melody of this song has spontaneously been playing in my head during some significant events in my life. Only the movie Stalker by Tarkovsky has had a similar effect on me. I consider this a mark of a very special breed of true art.
