Not to many people these days realise that the 79 series land cruiser isn’t built for Touring,comfort off-road capability. They are designed for farmers and the mining industry. I’ve driven dozens of 79series in all over the world in underground mines where they are trashed 24hours a day in low range for 99% of there life. We in the mining industry don’t need track correction huge power cup holders a fancy steering wheel (it’s only there to turn the front wheels) These land cruisers are the only vehicle that can and does last in the harsh underground environment (high salt content water mud and dirt) plus being driven in low range at 3-4000rpm it’s whole life, nothing else lasts. So to all these people that whinge about the 79 series maybe have a look into what they are actually built for. You head to the country you will see stock 79 series as farm utes now I’m pretty sure a farmer doesn’t care about cup holders when his got a sick sheep sitting on the passenger seat.

I honestly dont understand why people still desperately want one when there is so many inherant issues from factory and really is complete lack luster in every department for its price tag it should not be worth anymore than a ranger or hilux when a hilux has more equipment and capability. It really should be a 200 Series with stronger more rugged components. If you had these features and issues in any other car domain i.e A hot hatch back (not a great analogy) but it would be written off as a decent car at all and over priced yet we have everyone else jump on this bandwagon for a 79 when it really is needing alot fixed. Your much better off buying a Y62 patrol. The hate list recap; 1.Turning circle and the track from factory should have a 20-1 Steering rack - 2. Definately should have the twin turbo V8 from the 200 series when your paying that much it should not be a slug - paying exuberant prices when a Y62 is 20-30 grand cheaper and will do everything better and has everything from factory right (or just buy a 200 series/300) 3. The interior is a joke we are in late 2000's a car not coming with cup holders, manual windows, no roof console, hopeless seats for lumbar and support with 5 way control and not having decent infotainment with options for apple car play/android auto we have phones with more tech than this car at $100k plus is a joke, a cheap car has better sound deadening to anyone that wants the car your the laughing stock of your mates but lucky you cant hear them with the cabin noise. 4. The Track is just a joke from factory that should not have been going on for the last decade toyota should have resolved this. If you want to spend another $5-10k to fix it... YOu can then add on that your still using leaf springs we have the technology and parts to be using triangulated coil sprung rear for better control support and enjoyment, they dont like laiden weight on the tray corectly the stock suspension really lacks it requires all new suspension, the torsion bars are a joke, the front end should 100% not be a leaf still a solid axle coil is needed we had all these things in the early 90's on some of the best 4wd 80 series and gu/gq yet we are willing to spend upwards for $20-30k to go ahead and make these changes. These cars really do not make sense when you put it all on paper... With the extra wasted money your better off buying a 80 series or gu/gq do a engine conversion build it out correctly and have all the creature comforts and still come in under the price of one of these 79 new

@Jason-cx1gi8 ай бұрын
Even though there are a few things that you may need to fix on these I would still buy one for simplification sake and the fact that I can build it the way I want to and not have the manufacturer put all if the gear on that complicates modifications
@dirtymuddyweekends8 ай бұрын
That's a valid perspective! The simplicity and potential for customization with the 200 series cruisers can be quite appealing. It's all about finding the right balance between having the essentials covered from the manufacturer and having the freedom to tailor the vehicle to your specific needs and preferences.

I guessing that for the lack of cup holders is because Toyota doesn’t want you to drink n’ drive
@raeanker30783 жыл бұрын
Toyota probably thinks the design flaws can be overlooked because most 79 series end up in the Middle East with antiaircraft guns bolted to the back.
@overlandready2 жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons the track is wider at the front than the rear, stability in tests: This means the vehicle doesn't roll as easy as the weight goes to the front outside wheel. Truning circle: Although it doesn't affect the actual distance, it does affect the rear wheel track, so it reduces the overall width of the inner to outer track of the wheels. There are a few more minor reasons too but all are down to testing and certs not real life use. Better buy a Landy Defender Ruben! They have had pretty much the same track for, well, ever! 😀
@overlandready2 жыл бұрын
Oh, and you still get the other issues too! Noisy, no cup holders, interststing seating position, underpowered and the turning circle of a small country! 😞

I hate that you can't buy an auto version stock , manual is fine for those able to change gear , but , some of us have specific needs and a wagon will not do the job ! If I have to modify a vehicle heavily , I don't bother starting with the most expensive std option , I go with a cheaper option and make it the way I want for less $$$$$ .

My pet hate is all most of the aussie canopy makers aren’t manufacturing a service body style canopy. Why do most them do a tray and canopy, extra materials, excess weight, they look ugly, who the hell is constantly taking the canopy off? Come canopy manufactures have choices……...

I agree with the engine's tune. For an engine on the larger capacity, only produces moderate power. Clearly Toyota opted more on the side of conservatism. Reliability, durability and longevity were the priority over maximum power. That's what fleet and rural buyers want. But I believe, even if Toyota fitted bigger injectors, a bigger turbo (or two), and endowed it with a more extreme tune, the industry and many 4WD enthusiast would still want more and would still modify them. Only this tine, it will cost more to gain higher KWs. The funny thing is, most people I know when looking to buy 2nd hand Landcruisers (or other 4WDs), they look for an example with no engine modifications at all (other than maybe a snorkel, catch-can and 2nd fuel filter).

Good honest video Reuben there so expensive from factory people should only have to worry about putting wheels suspension bar work and there touring setup shouldn’t have to worry about installing cup holders or diff housing or getting it tuned because it’s slower than every other daulcab
@Scoobienorth3 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand why the different track with is such an issue. When wheeling a slightly narrower rear diff helps as when you go around rocks and such it gives a little more room for the rear too walk over. But Most of the time is not a big deal.
@4west73 жыл бұрын
Have you ever driven one with the differernt rear track? I didn't think it'd be a problem either until I drove mine on sand........ The rear end was continually switching left/right in the front wheel tracks....

Who would think a 4wd commercial vehicle would have a high seating position for visability, sparse interior for cost and no cup holders! But you are right about the track width it sucks ass.
@adelarsen97763 жыл бұрын
It's strange that most professional users of 79 series V8 don't have any problem. But overloaded with a huge canopy on the dual cab model and you soon find the steering vague and light going up a steep rutted hill. The dual cab 79 is fine if you just put 100kg in the back. No one does that of course. The 79 dual cab is an inherently bad design for those who want to load them up.

The 79 wouldn't be made if it wasn't for the huge amount that mining buy. They are under powered and Ag as hell but nothing else can survive the environment that they go through in mining.
@SambarMoose3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Toyota were thinking tourer when they built them. They were meant to be for mining and agriculture am pretty sure, that's why they are not pretty on the inside and the turning circle was not an issue.

Standing beside a fully kitted out 79 and telling people the things you hate about it. But yeah that's some things Toyota could have done from the factory but then it'll put the aftermarket guys out of business. I've never driven a V8 one yet, we only have that sluggish but reliable 1hz but with an aftermarket turbo man this things can last you forever. Anyways I love the farm style 79, there I said it. I just fckn love it.

@dirtymuddyweekends2 жыл бұрын
Both can be pretty similar. It really depends on how far you go with the 79. If you add an auto, coils, diff etc. They can get right up there with the 200 dual cabs.
