Half relationships can be so helpful in genetic genealogy research. That's because with full cousins you always share TWO ancestors. A couple. So the DNA you share with your second cousin comes from BOTH your great-grandma Gwen AND your great grandfather Marvin. That means the matches you share could be related to Gwen OR Marvin and it is tricky to tell the difference. But if you have a half-second cousin, who is related to you only through Gwen's first marriage (you are a descendant of her second marriage to Marvin), then all the matches you share with this half-cousin help you find other DNA matches who are related only to Gwen, without Marvin's DNA interfering.
