THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That was a good introduction to DNA Painter and the What Are The Odds tool. I really appreciate the brevity and simplicity. It's just enough to start digesting what one needs to understand about each tool. I found answers to questions I had and can now formulate follow up questions to explore.

Could you do a more detailed instruction video on how to use the "What Are the Odds" tool? I just discovered this tool and would like to use it to help with an adoption case in my tree, but I'm a little lost with it. Thanks! Great video!

I will definitely put it on the list!

Would you be so inclined to do a video about using WATO for Jewish DNA / endogamous DNA? I've tried it but like with all the tools, endogamy sure makes it harder. I've noticed that the hypothesis are much smaller than in non-endogamous cases.

This was a great video and answered so many questions and then left me asking so much more. lol I will go play with DNA Painter for bit before I start asking questions.

What if you don't know any of the matches or how they connect to that person?
@williamrbuchanan41532 жыл бұрын
The thing is , how recessive or dominant are the inherited ones. You really want the best, so, is there a way it got there or not got there. .relatives in many places , all lived together. But not all an make allowances for human’ events’ ! Tip toe or fast bike?

I manage the DNA of my two sisters and we are full siblings. There are some matches to a particular family, which we do not share in common. Can I enter their matches on the WATO tree to get a more accurate finding of where I fit on the tree? In particular, I am trying to place my grandfather on this tree, but I do not have his DNA. I only have my matches to people on this tree (and my sisters').

Do you think “What are the odds” would help with an deceased orphan grandfather???- if I have his decease daughters dna and 3 or 4 other descendants including myself and two brothers…. What are your thoughts ?

So I created the perfect family and assigned the average cM for each relationship to each member to include the average parent and child cM to the hypothesis and I got the score of 1. How can this be? I thought one was an unlikely score. I'm really asking because I am in this odd situation where it appears great Grandpa had an affair with great great Aunt and had two babies from that (All the kids are 400 cM range except one who is not tested but her grandkid is 44cM pointing away from his grandma as being my husband's grandma so I assigned her to the aunt's husband and suddenly I got a 108) The highest scores I was getting before were ones and I thought that was bad. Till I added an unknown in the position of grandparent and assigned a child and placed my husband under him/ her as hypothesis and the score was 108. So now we have 14 people who have tested as great aunt's/ second cousin level and my husband is not from any of those lines except one made up line. How do I even break through, this is the 2nd unknown line I have arrived at meaning 2 of 4 grand parents are illegitimate?

When you have a situation like this, I would suggest bringing it to the Facebook group for What Are the Odds. You can post a link to the WATO tree you have created so others can mess around with it and help you with your question. A lot of experienced users in that group - facebook.com/groups/WhatAretheOdds.

I love the Shared cM tool, have always wondered, if you don't mind... how good would this tool work for a *very* endogenous community (or cases of half and double relationship)
@GeneaVlogger4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the endogamous community because each is different and causes different issues with the matching but for the most part it isn't always the most reliable tool for anyone from an endogamous population. For Jewish endogamy it is useful up to maybe a 3rd or 4th cousin distance but even then there can be problems. It does equate for half relationships though and you can add that in WATO.

@@GeneaVlogger I do have a small % of Ashkenazi, but also, to my surprise, a huge hunk of Puerto Rican (which for being a "small"island), and I've found that (no matter the DNA platform), about 85% of my DNA relatives are from there, yet absolutely no side of my family can say: "oh yeah, I've heard" (in fact even the other side says there is 0% chance yet we have over 5-7% shared DNA, ranging in the 1st-2nd Half 1st cousin or Half aunt/uncle). Thank you for your reply by the way :)
@GeneaVlogger4 жыл бұрын
You may find a lot of relatives from Puerto Rico because a branch of your family may have moved there sometime in the last few hundred years, so you wouldn't necessarily have ancestry from Puerto Rico. As an example, I have tons of close DNA matches with people in Australia but that is because my 2nd-great grandfather had siblings who moved to Australia while he moved to Boston with some of the other siblings.

Thanks! I have a question. I have several dna matches that lead me to a set of great grandparents. I did my chart with my great grandfather as all the matches were leading to him. Recently I matched with some on the great grandmothers line and I would like to see how it effects the scores. How would you add that line? It is through a brother of hers. Thanks for your time. Be well~Janice

Are you asking about DNA Painter or WATO?

GeneaVlogger WATO
@GeneaVlogger5 жыл бұрын
I don't believe WATO is capable of having both sides in one tree. You'll have to make a separate tree for your great-grandmother's side. You can always check with the facebook group as a lot of people often find different tricks to do certain tasks and someone may have figured out a best method for this - facebook.com/groups/WhatAretheOdds

Hi Can i ask what if my score is 4986393 ? This is on a WATO I have done for me looking to see where i fit .
@GeneaVlogger6 жыл бұрын
Hi Faye, the scores only matter in comparison to each other. If your score is that high then you must have added a lot of matches into this WATO tree. How many matches have you added in?
