If you purchase a regular subscription or DNAplus, you can see the By Parent split for your matches and your origins. The ethnicity estimates are intended to go back 500 to 1000 years, before inter-continental travel, and before modern country borders. Since there are no living people that old, each of the DNA companies create reference panels to use for the ethnicities. AncestryDNA reports these in a range of percent.
