"a distinction between race and culture" as a new and prospective dm, lemme just say, that is all ive wanted and i love that so much. i like characters being shaped by their culture as well as race, so thats perfect to me
@Pe0ads6 жыл бұрын
Lunar Dogs same, so much so that in my current/first game as a player I'm playing as a halfling who grew up cast out from his clan. He doesn't really get halfling stuff that much so interacting with the other halfling in the party is fun. Defo looking into running eberron once I hopefully start DMing
@TenositSergeich6 жыл бұрын
This distinction is everywhere in Eberron, in fact, not just for monster races. For example, pretty much the only thing that ties together Mror dwarves of Khorvaire, exiled clans that have outlived their motherland without realising it, and Akiak dwarves of Sarlona, who were betrayed by the Inspired and are mostly slaves with some freedom fighters hiding in the north of Riedra, is race. Same goes for Aerenal and Tairnadal elves, Ghaash'Kala, Carrion Tribes and mainstream orc culture, wild ogres of Khorvaire and peaceful ogres of Borunan in Riedra, Heirs of Dhakaan and Ghaal'dar goblinoids, and even in a way dragons of Argonessen and rogue dragons. And, of course, human ethnicities of Khorvaire and Sarlona, such as Karrns, Nulakheshi, Khunan, and many others - just so one would remember that in some ways, other races are as diverse as humans.

Stockport Syndrome ayy same concept here! my first ever character was a high elf rogue (i know, how original) who was raised by a dwarf, in a town full of the most motley assortment of creatures. they had/have a -1 or -2 to Int as well, but +3 to Cha. its interesting toplay them as being able to play them as talking the pants off a local gnomish shopkeep in their own language, or drink a dwarf under the table, but barely be able to read or speak in their "native" language.

@@lunardogs2416 If you want to get a feel for some of its trappings, the MMO "Dungeons and Dragons Online" is (mostly) set in Eberron, and deals with some of the elements of the setting in really cool ways. You straight up go to Sharn (Eberron's New York City, basically) at level 15 and it's pretty dope. Over the course of the game, you meet Warforged with PTSD, the dwarven Illuminati, a city-orc who basically desecrates an orcish burial ground because he so disrespects his heritage, a crazed inventor who blows up his lab with you in it to protect his secrets, a bugbear running an illicit smuggling operation, the lawful-good ghost of a beholder betrayed by an archlich, a hill-giant shaman who decides to become an actor, and a dragon who locks herself in a massive safety deposit box to make its contents her new hoard. One of the earliest quests you get is from a kobold pacifist who's been driven out of his home by racist city guards. You also rescue a friendly mindflayer named "Fred" several times. He's a good guy.

Thank god, finally a setting that doesn't pit Orcs as the "bad guys", the mindless blood thirsty monsters used as grinding fodder. I've *hated* how most systems treat them. I love Orcs, I think they're really cool and so underappreciated. Let them be smart, have a place in the economy, have a structure. I've been begging for something like this.

Eberron orcs are profoundly cool. They got in a big druidic circle back in the day and blew up a moon to stop an invasion from Xoriat, the plane of madness. That ritual basically accidentally created the Deku Tree, too. Basically. Yeah, Eberron orcs are awesome.

Maybe Goblins hiring adventurers to be Indiana Jones to help them regain some of their history and artifacts, and promising useful magical items in return? ETA on Print Eberron?

An Eberron adventure that's similar to that concept that I enjoy is Seekers of the Ashen Crown
@christophercheck15904 жыл бұрын
Eberron is also explicitly based on the sort of two-fisted tales and pulp adventure stories/time period that inspired Indiana Jones (it's supposed to be taking place in an era roughly equivalent to our 1920's-30's, like the Indiana Jones movies). This is a very reasonable and almost encouraged sort of adventure in Eberron. But, of course, to complicate things, as a DM, I'd also have a faction within the goblins who hired the PCs to do that who are members of the Aurum, basically the Illuminati of Eberron, who are willing to sell out their own culture and heritage for power and influence, so you end up with a conflict within the PC's benefactors that they have to navigate the political perils of. And maybe there's an old Quori creation forge buried where you're sent to find those artifacts, as well, so you also have to deal with some Inspired from Riedra, and the House Cannith/Kalashtar/whatever other group trying to stop them. Oh, that ruin? Maybe it's in/near the Mournlands, or else some territory claimed by the Lord of Blades/an aggressive tribe of Talenta Halflings. Yeah, Eberron has a lot of wrinkles.

I actually wanted to hear what he was going to say about gnolls.
@EmPiT.6 жыл бұрын
mooxim The thing about them is that they are created to destroy, purge, feast ... so I don’t really think they will be that different! Like obviously there can be one gnoll or a little group that isnt just a mutated hyena but the whole race would be a problem with the lore. But if they do something about that and come up with a plot about them beeing different it would be great!
@daliesandmentlegen88116 жыл бұрын
from what i see, gnolls appear to be the most true neutral folk out there, but instead of being switzerland and refusing to support anyone, they support *all* sides of any battle as mercenaries, so they'll always be on the winning side. they'll never hurt other gnolls who happen to be on opposite sides, but other than that they don't care about the outcome as long as they're part of it
@paperbullet19455 жыл бұрын
I hear that gnolls were different in earlier editions. In 5e Forgotten Realms, they're mindless man-eaters, but maybe they're different in earlier editions, or in Eberron.
