@Druid of Scosglen True but that's the risk you have to be willing to take when you interact with people socially. Sure, the social contract is to try to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible but not everyone will feel comfortable with topics such as ideology or philosophy. I think DnD and Roleplaying games have room for all types of players and campaigns but I do think there are some people who just make people uncomfortable but a good thing is you have autonomy and can decide who you want to hang out with.

You know what is REALLY GREAT about clerics and paladins? Whenever the PC does something against their god's ethos, you can 1) Have the spell fizzle or the action, even on a NAT 20, inexplicably fail at the last instant. Then, "You hear a 'tink' sound," and when they look around for the source, "You notice a small hairline crack in your holy symbol. Second time they try to do ANYTHING against their god's ethos, you can 1) Have the spell fizzle or the action fail, without even the first burst of hope that it will work, and "You hear a CRACK." When they look down, "Your holy symbol is broken in two." IF they try to go against their god's ethos without FIRST going to a temple for a repentance quest, "You are smited by lightning, out of a clear blue sky. Your god takes your VOWS seriously, and leaves NOTHING behind to resurrect. Make a new character." I LOVE my group. Not problematic, at all, except or the inconvenience of them throwing me for a loop every session. EVERY SINGLE SESSION. "What do you mean, 'think outside the box?' What box? There's a box?!" Yeah, these people are GREAT, and they really keep me on my toes. That said, at the very beginning, I made ALL of them, religious or not, choose a deity who would claim their soul upon their death. I made it clear that, depending on how well they followed their god's ethos, they may actually wind up going to a different god on their death. Currently, one of them has THREE GODS vying over who gets him when he dies. All of them are good gods, btw. It's just that this guy, in ONE ROUND OF BATTLE, managed to convince two different gods than the one he actually worships to claim him, should he die. I LOVE making the gods have a real hand in how their lives (and especially their spells and combat) go, depending on whether or not their god is willing to CLAIM them. Of course, should they veer off so much that the god who IS GOING TO CLAIM THEIR SOUL when they die turns out to be an evil god, then there will be some in-game issues, for sure. Even if they are not clerics or paladins, and don't do any religious stuff, changing the god who is going to claim you, and is watching over you, will lead to STUFF of one sort or another. For example, you go to face the BBEG, and, instead of attacking you, he smiles and welcomes "a brother in worship" into his parlor and serves you tea and cakes. Hey, if you WANT to play an evil campaign, I can do that. Just be aware that other adventuring parties will hunt you down, and churches and town masters will put bounties on your head. But every now and again, if the players and DM agree, running an evil campaign, or even just an evil one-shot, can be a lot of fun. Murderhoboing is best left to one-shots, though, because the consequence crows don't have time to come home to roost. Well, unless you do a time skip.
@ttiagoox Жыл бұрын
The first story just made me roll my eyes, what a disaster party. I have no issue with a Evil Party. Just as a lawful or neutral party have the helping of others or completion of quests as their objectives, Evil parties have the objective of growing in power and wealth so they can do whatever the hell they want with it. So long as they can handle the consequences of their actions. A growing in power party of powerful adventurers could start to expand their territory and gain suport of evil factions like the Zhentarin or dark deities. What i cannot admit in my games is Evil AND Stupid. Evil cannot trive with dumb actions. If you want to fulfill your evil objectives you need to think and plan before you act. A small town like Phandalin have more than enough guards to easily overwhelm a party of small fry low level adventurers, not to mention veterans who live in there like Eldermath. A evil party who was not smart enough to cover their tracks will constantly be hunt down by Inquisitors, Kingsguard and Bounty Hunters.

Yep. If I were the DM, I would have done the "Rocks fall on you. Just you, the person who just said that." And if anyone agrees with him, or argues that it's not fair, rocks fall on them, too. And then, "Leave my table. I don't play with RAPISTS. Also, never talk to me again. I don't socialize with RAPISTS. Oh, and if you are EVER charged with assault or a sex crime, I will VOLUNTEER to serve as an anti-character-witness at your trial. Just because nobody ever CAUGHT you yet doesn't mean you're not a rapist. You are clearly rapists, and I only wish I had the authority to put you in prison for your crimes. Goodbye, forever, RAPISTS." Why would I say that? Because I honestly believe that people who will JOKE about rape are actual rapists, who are feeling you out, to see if you are safe enough for them to expose their actual crimes with you. As in, "Hey, my buddies and I are gonna gang-rape my girlfriend. Will you be the one to hold the camera for us? We wanna post it on the deep web! Hur hur hur." If you laugh at the rape jokes, they'll think you're one of them, and try to rope you in, or at least not be afraid to brag to you about their "conquests." AND, when they are actually accused, they will expect you to have their back and bully the victim for DARING to come out and say something about what they did. And even if they have never IRL acted out on their urges, the urges ARE THERE. The urges are there, waiting and lurking, and ready to pop out, whenever THEY THINK THEY WON'T GET CAUGHT. Fear of getting caught is the ONLY thing that is stopping them from actually doing it. Once that fear is gone (maybe because they become rich, powerful, or just stoned/drunk), they WILL act on them.

I just feel like if you’re a push-over or don’t have a backbone.. then Don’t be a DM! That’s like the cornerstone of a good DM is the power of saying the word no
@Bertranddeghaul Жыл бұрын
being able to say No is a good start, but the true cornerstone of being a good DM is being able to respond to the insanity that players come up with by either just accepting and adopting/stealing their ideas if its funny or in any way constructive to a story. That and saying "are you sure this is what you want to do?" and then when they do push on... destroy their hopes and dreams if not their characters in the most creative way your black DM soul can think off because actions have consequences even in game. I used to run a what turned out to be a 10yr running vampire the darkages campaign (well that system but in a Caribbean setting during the high age of piracy that ended in our modern age) I had players pull the most sick and vile stuff on me and honestly I allowed it. But there where always consequences. I was lucky having a bunch of borderline murderhobo's who actually where amazing players. But i'm sure if those sessions would've been streamed online we would've ended on every (inter)national law enforcement/terrorism watch list thinkable. But as sick and depraved as it sometimes got, there was always reason to laugh about it. Funniest thing, in my experience the most vile and sadistic murderhobo's with the most NSFW plans are female players.....to quote R. Kipling "of all the animals in the kingdom of nature, the female is always the deadlier of the species"

Regarding the murderhobo story, this is the reason for so many common practices at a D&D table, folks. Talking about limits and player expectations in session 0, actually reading the Commoner and Guard NPC stat sheets at the end of the Monster Manual and running combat RAW, maintaining a clear and open line of communication between the DM and players so everyone's on the same page... When you skip all of this, you open your games up to this type of chaotic garbage. It's a lot less fun at the table than it sounds coming from Doge, btw. Please learn proper D&D etiquette before you decide to play in or host a D&D game, even if you're running it for your friends.
@MyLittlePonyTheater Жыл бұрын
Minor spoilers for LMoP below: For the record, villain campaigns are fine in my book. LMoP isn't really built for it, but I could've seen the Redbrands come in to recruit them, and the law officials from the city of Neverwinter becoming the main opponents of the party, instead of the Cragmaw clan. There's quite a lot I'd be able to work with as a DM, as long as my players wanted that kind of thing. When you just give up & refuse to run stat blocks and combat for the good guys before giving it a shot, or when your players are pushing boundaries that you're not comfortable with and you don't speak up for yourself, you'll just end up having a bad time. You'll learn all that from experience, though.

No, being new shouldnt be an excuse to let others walk all over you. Im not saying kick the player/players out instantly, but prodding them in the right direction or showing consequences for their characters' behavior would be start. If nothing works, then talk to them out of game, and if it still continues? Kick em. Simple as. I am watching this diablo 2 video like... "Why aren't you just using holy fire!" .. "That's Resist Fire! It's completely useless against lightning damage!"... "Why do you have thorns aura in normal act 1?" ... "You don't need smite at all!" ... "You have holy bolt and no merc!" ... "Can you please just use Holy Fire and Zeal!!!"

@@DnDDoge Great video, got me engaged and great voice that is easy listening. As for the dnd story, sounds like the dm was expecting a different story from what the players were expecting. Players were having fun and the dm wasn't. The dm wanted to "write a book" but most people just want to have fun and do whatever. Oh btw, want the most engagement? Be bad at video games. People love to hate.

You mean like sociopaths, those who would be serial killers if not for consequences, cheaters, manipulators and stalkers? No, you kick those kinds out.
