M's just took 2 out of 3 games from the Astros. We're not dead yet! Yet... Lifetime M's fan here. Thanks for watching this series about our stupid, miserable, frustrating, unpredictable team that we can't help but love. You'd find the weather in Seattle is remarkably similar to the UK's weather. Lots and lots of grey days. A slightly hotter summer, especially now, but you'd probably be right at home the other 3 seasons. You're right that a lot of fans love the double. I sure do, since Edgar is my favorite player. We're also exhausted of that being one of the few highlights we can look back for the last 30 years. Definitely take a glance of how the Mariners clinched the wild card in '22, since they did it in perfectly Mariners fashion. That postseason was very Mariners, as have been the next two seasons after that. Breaking the postseason drought, then immediately back into struggle and disappointment. We'll see if a miracle happens over the next week.

Auspicious timing dropping this one just as the flaming wreckage of our season hits the ground. I was there from a bit before this episode’s time frame, but for all intents and purposes, the entirety of this episode’s content is my fandom in a nutshell. They keep disappointing me in new and more unlikely ways, it’s almost impressive 😂

Yeah, that's the thing. It's ALWAYS different. One year you think they're definitely out of contention and they sign Robinson Cano out of nowhere. Another year you think they're looking good in spring training and they become the first $100million team to lose 100 games. Another year they trade away everyone they can to start a full-on rebuild with absolutely no expectations for the season and they start it 13-2. This year they had a 10-game division lead in the middle of summer and blew it (though it was always fool's gold given the state of the Astros pitching staff).

Pedro Martinez took a perfect game into extra innings and lost it on a lead off double in the 10th. Also, a pitcher by the name of Harvey Haddix in 1959 was perfect through 12 innings before losing it from an error by the 3rd baseman in the 13th inning. Neither of these performances count towards perfect games.

For the Hall of Fame caps it used to the players themselves choose which team they want or if they played for multiple teams and did not want to represent a team they can choose to have a blank cap. I believe they changed where the hall of fame works with the players going in to determine which team that player had the greatest impact on.

Many "favorite " moments as a Mariner fan. Watching Jr.'s consecutive game home run tying record on T.V. as a brand new Mariner fan from the Midwest. Watching Chris Bossio get hurt in a brawl the day he came back from the injured list. Listening to Edgar's winning double on the radio. Listening to Niehaus' broadcast every summer day. NOT Bobby Ayala. Being in the Kingdome watching Johnson make a run at a single game strikeout record, pitch a complete game, and lose...and see the longest home run I've ever witnessed off the bat of Mark McGuire. Watching A-Rod turn a double play without even coming close to stepping.on second base. Watching A-Rod come up to bat his first time back in Seattle as Monopoly money rains down from the stands. Watching John Marzano fight Paul O'Neil, and subsequently, hearing fans boo O'Neil every time the Yankees came to town. Being at the last game in the Kingdome Being at the first game at Safeco. Getting slapped in the face by reliever Frankie Rodriguez's glove while he was trying to shag fly balls in batting practice. 2001. Mike Cameron's four homer game (going back to back twice with Boone) and very nearly getting a fifth. The commercials! Watching the Mariners win at Fenway in 2000. Watching the Cubs beat the Mariners at Wrigley (my home ballpark) in 2007, with Pinella managing. Watching Ichiro break the single season hit record, from an Olympia bar. Watching Griffey one last time as a Mariner and Johnson pitch his last game in Seattle as a Giant. Sitting in the King's Court multiple times (and almost receiving the turkey leg). Seeing my all-time favorite ballplayer, Edgar Martinez, become a Hall of Famer. Lou Pinella as a whole. But my absolute favorite moment is one day game the summer of 1997, sitting in the outfield in the Kingdome watching Lou Pinella. I was looking directly into the dugout, watching Lou sit in his customary spot in the far corner. He was constantly kicking his legs, and then I noticed he stopped as soon as the pitcher threw the ball. He started again as soon as the catcher caught it. Did that the entire game. Never saw that before then. Didn't see it when he managed the Cubs later on.

M's fan since I moved to Seattle in the late '80s, and I watched this series when it came out (essentially a gift during Covid lockdown) but it's been so fun re-experiencing it with you. One factor not mentioned here: in that 2014 season when the M's finished just one game out, the team a couple of times held Felix back for an extra "rest day" that would, um, coincidentally move his start to a Friday or Saturday. Staying in rotation and starting one more game might have been the difference that year, but it really appeared that the team was more concerned with bumping attendance. More effects of the Howard Lincoln era.

I agree that having an announcer for each MLB team is special. As a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's, I have fond memories of watching my Yankees on WPIX Channel 11 and hearing Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, and Bill White call the games. The games and their voices become one identity and that becomes part of the soundtrack of my youth. I get emotional when I watch old games on KZbin and hear their voices. The home run calls, the funny personal stories...make me smile.😅

Game score is not a stat that’s seriously used for any baseball analysis. It’s more of just an interesting stat to sum up how impressive a pitcher’s stat line for a particular game was, in a single number. It’s good for things like this video, it’s not being used by anyone in the front office of a baseball team.
@Vivieldi
@Vivieldi Ай бұрын
The cherry picking part of how game score was used here is that most pitchers taken out after 5 and 1/3rd inning are not having a great game. Anyone having a dominant performance is likely to keep pitching. Though as they say who cares.

I remember those 2016 rangers. One of their starters had two of the weirdest stats: A.J. Griffin had a terrible era of 5.07 but had a 7-5 record that year, that season made zero sense. He would give up like 4 runs but the rangers would score a massive amount when Griffin was on the mound. Edit: All major teams in America has their own announcers for radio, and other than the NFL, they also all have their own duo to be announcers on TV.

Their series' on the Vikings, Falcons, and Dave Stieb are really good if you're looking for a series, and their video on the Micheal Jordan Bobcats team is a good (long) movie too. 2. Continuing the Mariner's weirdness; they finally made it back to the postseason in 2022, after two decades. They swept the Blue Jays in a best-two-of-three series in Toronto, then faced the Astros in the ALDS. The first two games were one-run and two-run losses in Houston . Game three was the first postseason MLB game in Seattle since before the iPod was released. It went scoreless into the 18th inning, when after over six hours of gameplay the Astros scored a run and the M's couldn't answer. The Astros swept the Mariners by out-scoring us by four runs over 36 innings.

in 2019 the Mariners were not considered to have good playoff odds. So Dipoto (the President of Baseball Operations) used the season to "rebuild". Part of this was sending away veteran arms that were "expensive" and rotating through a billion arms from their farm teams and from waiver claims. Also, many of the guys they overworked in this season likewise got hurt, thereby requiring the M's to use even more pitchers. There were guys with less than 3 total innings pitched for the Ms. Likewise, there was at least 1x where a pitcher was called up or claimed and failed to make an appearance due to getting hurt prior. 2019 was comically dysfunctional

Been looking forward to this all day! That scenario that you threw out about throwing a perfect game and losing actually did happen to Rich Hill a few years ago. He threw 9 perfect innings, but after 9 innings, the score was still 0-0. He went back out for the 10th and gave up a walk-off home run. It does not officially count as a perfect game

Love that you guys are watching this. It is spot on for Seattle fans and how we felt when the stars left. Not mad, just appreciative of the time they spent here. Arod was the only one I recall that we really didn't like. Was young, cocky and arrogant and nothing like Griffey. Was known in around the seattle club scene of being an bit of an asshole back then. When he left for bs deal we were more like 'don't let the door hit you on the way out' vs other players. Ichiro was a sad loss but we got it. Go get paid as much as you can for the remaining years and maybe get a ring you won't get in Seattle, you earned it. I was lucky enough to catch one of his home runs in 2011 so I think about him every day as I have the ball on my desk in a display case.

Bill James, the person who came up with the ‘Game Score’ stat, was the father of sabermetrics in baseball (otherwise known as ‘advanced baseball stats’). It took time for the value of his contributions to be recognized, but once that happened, it kickstarted a revolution in the way baseball strategy is thought about, and even the way the game itself is played. Without Bill James and his contemporaries, we wouldn’t have gotten to WAR, or launch angle, or spin rate, or anything else that we consider to be new age. So yeah, Game Score is a legit stat to measure Felix.

I don't think there's ever been a perfect game version, but another very rare pitching feat (that the mariners also accomplished in the time frame of this video) is the COMBINED no hitter. That's where after the starter has to come out despite throwing a no hitter, the bullpen then finish out the game without giving up a hit themselves. This theoretically could be done in a game where the starter was perfect, then the bullpen was perfect as well, but I'm pretty sure that just a combined no-no is already even more rare than a perfect game. The one the mariners threw was by an old journeyman workhorse called Kevin Millwood, no hits through 5 and a third, easily his best start of the season. Threw his elbow out on his last batter, was injured for weeks. The bullpen picked him up where he fell, and five more pitchers through the end of the game didn't give up a hit. It was a really special game, yet enother mariners moment that was like the ending of a movie.

A perfect game can be accomplished by one or multiple pitchers regardless if the game goes into extra innings as long as they don't give up a hit, walk, etc. Perfect games are so unbelievably rare - in the 155 year history of MLB, only 24 have been thrown (about one per decade). In fact, it would be 11 years after Felix's perfect game before Domingo German would accomplish this in 2023. Mariners are still technically in the playoff hunt and just beat the Astros today...🤞

Game Score is pretty good at telling you how dominant a pitcher was in a sinle game, but that's about it. It's very simplistic and doesn't provide much information, and isn't predictive. It has a use, but you'll really only ever see it mentioned when somebody has a really dominant game, usually a complete game with a lot of strikeouts.

There are a few different videos that I could recommend about the perfect game beyond the 9th inning question. The one that comes to mind at the moment is a Foolish Baseball about the saddest no hitters. There might be a Secret Base video about it as well (along with the Dave Stieb series that would be a good follow-up to this series.) Long story short, the MLB had to formalize the rules a few decades ago and (among other things) decided that if you go beyond the 9th inning with a perfect game and blow it in extra innings, it doesn't count. Also, the Dorktown and Foolish Baseball videos on Rickey Henderson should both be added to the list, as well as the other Dorktown series'.

Prior to 2001, it was the sole choice of the player as to which cap their Hall of Fame plaque had. Since then, the Hall itself has the final choice but only after thorough research and consultation with the player. That group became to be known as the "'95 Dream Team". Though I have not been closely following MLB as of late I will continue to root for the M's. Yes I would love to see them make it to the World Series (and win), even if they never do it doesn't matter. It's not about rooting for the underdogs for me. Its about rooting for my home team. No matter if they are having a smoking hot season like in '01 or never making it above .500 and finishing dead last with the worst record in MLB history. There are so many better teams out there but I don't think there is one that can put together such a story book season like the Mariners.

The amount of number pithers used has been slowly going up since expansion of games, pay, health and injury. Pitch count is part of all of that. Pitchers also decades ago didn't rest four days between starts so the number of pitchers on a roster is far higher than in was in the 1900s-1970, I think that's probably close in guessing.

A few years ago (after this video was made), the Mariners did finally end the playoff drought. They even beat Toronto in the wild card round including an incredible comeback in game 2! When they played at home in the divisional round against the Astros in game 3 of the ALDS Felix Hernandez threw out the ceremonial first pitch. And in true Mariners fashion, in honor of King Felix's legacy, they proceeded to lose 1-0 in an 18 inning game. Once again, providing King Felix with absolutely zero run support. This season will mark the 4th consecutive year the M's have played at .500 or better and that will likely include only that one playoff appearance to show for it.

You're right that run differential isn't important, but it does have predictive power. A team with a big gap between their run differential vs their win-loss record in the first half of the season, you should base your second-half expectations more on the run differential.

There are no rule limits on the maximum a pitcher can pitch (just some minimums now). The number of pitchers used increasing is solely due to teams not willing to push pitchers later into games but that is due to both trying to save arms as well as analytics saying that pitching through an order a third time is very bad. Rosters limits haven't changed too drastically over time.

You're right about the White Sox this season, who were 24-69 on June 21 before embarking on a stretch in which they went 12-51 before finally getting a 13th win on Tuesday, September 24th (yesterday in my time zone!) I'm also shocked the Rays are on that list. The other franchises on that list are all historically pretty good with, aside from the white sox, 10+ pennants and several World Series. The Rays, on the other hand, finished last in the AL east every year for their first 10 years of existence... and have apparently been pretty good since? Huh. Shows how much my health issues have taken me out of following baseball...

You can lose a perfect game if the extra inning runner placed on second base scores, but it goes into extra innings.
@psymar
@psymar Ай бұрын
Yeah, under the current rules. That requires a perfect game of 10+ innings though; only 26 have even gone 9 innings, of which 24 were thereby perfect games, and 1 was Pedro's that got broken up in the 10th. Only Harvey Haddix has ever taken a perfect game through the 10th, and that was broken up in the 13th.

A pitcher can't be saddled with a loss if he throws a perfect game. A perfect game means no hits, walks, hitbatsmens, or errors. 27 up, 27 down in order. If his team doesn't score, he gets a no-decision. A pitcher can throw a no-hitter and get the loss e.g. In 1990, NYY pitcher Andy Hawkins got the loss in a game @ Chicago. He threw a no-hitter through 8 innings but the Yankees lost 2-1 because of walks and errors. He pitched only 8 innings because they were on the road.

Game Score is a pretty subjective statistic as to whether you like it or not, but it has the benefits of being simple and straightforward. There's two versions though. The original starts at 50 and adds 2 points per inning from the 5th onwards; the new version starts at 40 and adds 2 points per inning period. Both subtract two points per hit. Old version adds 1 per out plus 2 per full inning from the 5th onwards, and subtracts 1 per walk, 4 per earned run, and 2 per unearned run. New version adds 2 per out, and subtracts 2 per walk, 3 per run (earned or not), and 6 more per home run. I think I prefer the latter as it places more emphasis on keeping things under control after a fielder makes an error with 2 out: all runs scored in the inning after that are unearned, even if the pitcher subsequently allows a grand slam. The new version also gives a slightly higher score to the outing both versions recognize as the greatest pitching performance in history: May 6, 1998, Astros at Cubs, when Kerry Wood put up 9 IP, 1 hit, 0 walks, 0 runs, 20 strikeouts. 105 by the old formula and 112 by the new one. There were only one or two balls hit out of the infield that day and neither was the hit, that was an infield single by Ricky Gutierrez. Oh, and this was Wood's 5th career start.

Stark Raving Sports has a video on Griffey and Kobe called "A Contrats of Fate" where they talk about both players retirement game. Griffey in a lof of ways is comparable to Kobe in talent and charisma, although by the end of his career he was very unathletic and carefree in comparison to Kobe. Still they were very important players for their respective sport, and Griffey's last game was a very sad way to end it, no one knew he was retiring. It is very telling of how unfair baseball really is. He is arguably one of the best players of his generations and never played in a world series game. It is rare for baseball players to have a retirement run such as Derek Jeter had. Most of my baseball idols from the last few decades such as Lincecum, Prince Fielder and even Felix Hernandez retired with injuries or were sent to the minors after some bad season and never made their way back up. Hernandez still tried to make a comeback and signed with a minor league team in 2020, but because of C0vid he opted out of his contract. He was 34 back then, fairly young for ballplayer of his caliber. Baseball is probably the most difficult sport to have consistency and with the insane influx of players coming and going, it's very easy for you to retire without anyone noticing it.

Sadly, there are pitchers who've had no-hitters, and I think perfect games, through nine innings but their team didn't score any runs. By definition, it's impossible to have a perfect game and lose, sorry. Hell, you can pitch a full game, not allow any hits, and not only be tagged with the loss, but not credited with a no-hitter.
@psymar
@psymar Ай бұрын
Perfect game doesn't count if it's broken up in extra innings amd it's happened twice. Pedro Martinez lost one on the first batter of the 10th hitting a double but a relief pitcher came in and his team won. Harvey Haddix, however, had a perfect game through 12 innings for the Pirates in 1959. The perfection bid ended on an error by the third baseman; after a sacrifice bunt by the next batter moved the runner to second he intentionally walked Hank Aaron (a reasonable choice), but the next batter hit the ball over the fence for what would have been a walk-off home run, except Aaron saw the lead runner cross the plate and, not realizing it was a home run, walked off the field after touching second, meaning the batter was then called out for passing him upon reaching third, and it goes down as an RBI double and a 1-0 loss for Haddix.

To my understanding yes indeed the perfect game would be carried over into the extra innings so it could be lost in extras. Also Trout is currently 33 and will be 34 next August

A perfect game would only be perfect at the completion of the game. You can't throw a perfect game and lose because a perfect game entails no baserunners, and you need baserunners to score runs.

No, losing in a perfect game is not possible in the traditional sense (and it's not considered a perfect game just because you pitched 9 innings). You can lose a no-hitter game based on errors/walks. BUT, now that there is a runner on 2nd to start extra innings, you could lose a game in which you were perfect, as two routine outs can result in the runner scoring. So you could have a guy that pitched 10 or 9.2 perfect innings (depending on top or bottom of the inning) and lost... This is why the runner on 2nd rule is dumb (people can score at no fault of the pitching team). Do 1st base if you have to have someone on.
