In Northern Cyprus, a booming industry in higher education has lured many African students with the chance to work in Europe. Unfortunately, many of these students end up saddled with debt and left vulnerable to loan sharks and human traffickers. In our new series 'Digging Deep,' The 77 Percent sheds light on what it takes to get a degree from a country that doesn’t exist.

Everything about this video is accurate. I attended the University of Kyrenia a maritime university owned by Near east university and lived in Gonyeli a Suburb very close to uni. My God life was hell in that place. I’m glad I was able to leave Northern Cyprus but I feel bad for some of my mates I left behind who till this day since 2016 haven’t been able to leave the country due to different reasons from family thinking they are a disappointment after spending good amount to send them there and the individuals thinking that they may be able to go to other parts of Europe from Northern Cyprus etc. Thanks for putting this out there, hopefully it helps educate people thinking of travelling there.

The TRNC is not a recognised country. It's a part of Cyprus that was invaded by Turkey and is still under occupation. A simple Google search can tell you that. I don't know why people thought it was a good idea to move there.

People don't just supposedly thing that it is a good place. Majority of the students are been misled. Most don't even know where they are heading to. It's only upon arrival you realise where you truly are and comes the huge disappointment.

The Island of Cyprus, which is geographically an extension of the Anatolian peninsula, has been a land of many conquests due to its proximity to the Middle Eastern countries and its strategic location at the cross-road of East and West. Cyprus has seen a succession of rulers, namely Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders and Turks who ruled the Island as part of the Ottoman Empire, from 1571 until 1878. Cyprus has never been a Greek Island. It is both useful and important to keep in mind that there has never been in Cyprus a "Cypriot nation" due to the distinct national, religious and cultural characteristics of each ethnic people who, in addition, speak different languages. It is also interesting to note that although the two peoples had lived together in the Island for centuries there were practically no inter-marriages and not even a single commercial partnership was set up. In March 1963 Archbishop Makarios said "The (Independence) Agreements have created a State, but not a Nation." (The Greek Cypriot Cyprus Mail 28.3.63) This being so, any approach to the Cyprus question which regards Cypriots as one nation would be fundamentally flawed. There are, in fact, two peoples of Cyprus - the Turkish Cypriots numbering about 200.000 and the Greek Cypriots numbering about 700.000. The Turkish Cypriots are mainly Moslems and the Greek Cypriots are mainly adherents of the Greek Orthodox Church. Cyprus lies 40 miles from the coast of Turkey, and Turkish people have inhabited the island since the 12th century. The Island is 250 miles from the nearest Greek island (Rhodes), and Athens is 460 miles away. The Greek and Turkish Cypriots lived relatively peacefully until Greece gained its independence from the Ottomans in 1821. The Greek Cypriot agitation for “Enosis” (the union of Cyprus with Greece), perpetrated by the Greeks, was further intensified with the change of administration in Cyprus (from Turkish to British) in 1878. The ultimate aim of the Greeks and Greek Cypriots was to oust the British and annex Cyprus to Greece and in order to Hellenize the entire population of the Island.

I would advice anyone especially African students to not go to north Cyprus. Infact, let it not be an option. No jobs, the country is not recognized internationally so a degree from a North Cyprus university is not recognized. There is also a huge language barrier. A majority of the local people speak only turkish. Most Turkish people are exploitative in nature. Cost of living is very expensive especially rent which is paid in pounds and landlords increases it almost every year. if you are not careful or disciplined, you might be lured into doing ridiculous things just to survive like scams (yahoo), prostitution, or even selling drugs. Don’t allow any agent to deceive you. Do your research and ask questions. Please consider other better countries to go to like UK, USA, Canada or any European counties preferably Schengen areas.

A brief history of so called "TRNC" can answer most of your questions. Northern Cyprus is an occupied part of Republic of Cyprus, by Turkey in 1974. Northern Cyprus is a military Zone, a puppet country, regognised only by Turkey. There is no legal system, no education system, no health system and generally there is a chaos in all public services. The only thing that works properly is the 40.000 military presence of Turkish troops. All kind of crime is on top of priorities of the regime which is ruined by a gang of locals and Turkish. Under those conditions naive Africans are cheated by locals and other African fellows called "agents". Please inform ignorant Africans about it and congratulations for your video. I'm a Greek cypriot

From the time I started reading your comment I knew straight forward that you are a Greek Cypriots. Seeing that you are so naive, ignorant, arrogant and stupid doesn't make African students in TRNC naive or ignorant. You have over exaggerated in your comments. I have studied and lived in N.Cyprus for over 4 and half years but I have never seen or experienced anything like Turkish gangs in the country. And there are legit and some of the best Universities in Northern Cyprus. Students do face all sort of hardships mentioned in the video. But then it wouldn't be right to discredit the universities and also give certain misinformations about the country. I know you Greeks & Turkish Cypriots do not see eye to eye, but let say the truth and not bring in false insinuations.

Being a Greek speaking Cypriot it would be easy to accuse you of bias, but no. You tell it like it is. I'm UK Citizen who knew Cyprus pre 1974. I wish a peaceful resolution but that won't happen while there is a single Turkish soldier on the island. Then, what to do with the 200,000 forced Turkish migrants and their descendants. They must leave the island as well.
