I have a red crowned and yellow crowned, both arrived as juveniles. The red is noisy, nippy, excitable, and enjoys the company of other parrots, while the yellow is mellow, gentle, patient, and only has eyes for me. I’m trying to get him accustomed to other people so he isn’t overly bonded with me, but at the moment it’s a very special feeling. I never had birds as a child or young adult, and I never realized what I was missing. Amazons are like having a pet, child, and best friend all bundled up in feathers ❤

I was always told if you want to snuggle, get a puppy, not a parrot. I have a yellow naped Amazon who just turned 40 this March. She likes nothing better than to snuggle under a blanket, have her head and neck rubbed, and will literally turn her head, bury it into her back feathers, and fall asleep right on me. My male Sun Conure, on the other hand, is EXTREMELY loud....and needy

I posted a comment a year back regarding our orange winged amazon. The bond between me and oscar is quite incredible he is without shadow the most cuddly and lovable bird you could wish for (with me) he will happily fly to and sit comfortably with my wife and glad to say their bond has got better, he will however pick me every time unless my wife is eating something lol. The beak power and general amazon typical biteyness takes a lot of getting used to but with persistence its well worth the effort.

I would love an Amazon. There is one at the pet store that’s been there for years and I want to snatch him up. The only problem is their noise and my children that he could possibly bite. I would love to know more about when and what you feed all your parrots. Maybe a morning routine showing them all? :)
@ParrotBliss2 жыл бұрын
Morning routine vid- will work on it 😀- unfortunately, I agree. If you have children I would recommend a sweeter bird, like a Green-cheek Conure or a cockatiel. Or, if you want a bigger parent, and you have the money, a Golden Conure would be the best. They are so affectionate! Would be good with kids.

lorenza is amazing and blessed to have you. when you said about the bond with bigger parrots being special, i remembered my great dane dog(which was just huge)..he also chose me and it was the most beautiful gift i could have in my tenage years. i had other animals and pets, but with that huge gentle dog was just different. now i have a green cheek conure and even she is tinny, she is very bond to us.recently she started to ..talk?! she says come here very clear and mumbles how are you and whachudoing? these are stuff i say most of the day to her, but i did not expect it. i find her vocals and talking more than repetitions..like really trying to communicate. in the morning she wakes us up with "come here" and giving kisses..not with a scream. we are grateful 😅

We have ten birds including caiques, conures, and our most recent, an orange winged amazon male. He is pretty much as you describe being very bonded to me especially. He will let my wife interact and get scritches etc but you can tell he's always wary of other people including my wife, and definitely shows preference to being on me over my partner. It will be interesting to see over the next year or so how he settles in. he's only about 8 months old and I'd say hes handled equally by both of us. I definitely agree the bigger bird bond and especially with the amazon is noticable.. They are incredibly smart and affectionate, and their eyes flashing away when their brains are ticking away is mesmerising.

How has your experience with him so far? Been easier to socialize with others?
@michaelhornby29613 ай бұрын
When im not around my wife has persisted with kindness despite the bluffing and biting, and im happy to say hes now become a lot better with her and doesnt just insist on me being around, even to the point recently of bending his head down for scritches off her etc. shes very comfortable with our amazon now whilst im not around so clearly persistence has endured. I suppose the trick learnt from her interaction is not to punish or act scared and just to baby step the interactions gradually.

Great Video, I would say Sun Conures are the loudest parrot. I feel my baby Sun Conure chose me. When I went to go see him when he was still in pinfeathers, He sat in my hand he snuggles to my chest and jut looked up at me. My Mom was in the hospital in another city from having a major stroke. The two months I was at the hospital, I would go and see my baby. I feel parrots are so smart and do choose their human. You can really see she loves you. My one sun Conure who passed away hated everyone and would attack people that visited me. Great video Keep sharing videos of you feather babies.

I am fortunate that my DYH Amazon has allowed my wife to handle him. It took a few years, but she can 80% handle him. I can also have others pet him, which took even more time, but he's usually with me on the dock and boat, so he's gotten used to seeing lots. of different people. I still warn them that he can and will likely bite, but every time we go out it's gets a tad better.

That's true, for the most part, that Amazons tend to me a one-person bird, but this trait varies with the species. They are moody, though, during breeding season and the hot three that are most tempermental are the Yellow-naped, Double Yellow-Headed, and Blue Fronted. I agree that they do choose their owner, or person to bond with, which makes it difficult to find a sitter or someone to take care of them when their favorite person is not around. If you're looking for an all-around friendly parrot for the family, a cockatoo is a better choice but they are super noisy and give off a lot of dust.

I came to this video because a friends daughter wants to find a new home for her Blue Front Amazon… 🤔 I have 6 birds. 4 stay in one room (smaller birds) but the Amazon would be in the main living space where I also have my 2 Caiques. I had very minimal problems adding the second Caique. So questions what is the likelihood that the Caiques and Amazon can share the same living space? I would love to adopt him but not at risk of my other birds. Im still asking lots of questions of the prior owner.

I can’t say exactly. My Amazon is often in the same room with my Caiques, but she ignores them (and anyone else). The Amazon may be very happy to be around other birds. I’d love an update to hear what you do.

Be patient, give him 2 years to adjust. Keep offering the fresh foods, he WILL change in time. Opening his wings means he is taking a shower, do this a couple of times a week. Don't push him, let him come out of his shell. Again, give him 2 years. It's not easy for them to undo their past and learn to love and trust again- keep me updated
