VIDEO CONTENT:
In this video we take a look at how you can train in lockdown (should you be in this situation) using what’s around you outdoors (with some of the exercises/drills being able to be done indoors). In the UK - at the time of the publication of this video - we have just entered a second COVID lockdown. As it's now winter this is going to create more problems than with the first lockdown which was in the spring and summer.
I have adapted some of the drills and session content that we have been doing recently recently to showcase what you can do for example on a tennis court, in a park and using stairs or steps - such as the road bridge you will see in the video.
I'll aim to produce a couple more of these videos during lockdown 2.0 and some that you can do at home.

Thank you for the video, always good content from you Coach! How best can you maximise weight training if you only have a weight vest.

Thanks for the question. One way to use a weights vest would be to overload plyometric exercises in particular those that have a concentric emphasis i.e. pause then jumps. So, you could do vertical squat jumps or lunge jumps. If you were to sprint or bound then the additional weight carried would need to be light so that it did not disrupt mechanics too much or risk injury. Unfortunately much research indicates that adding weight to a plyometric exercise, does not have a significant positive effect, for example, adding weight to drops jumps had no benefits (slows down the contact time, for example). However, I would suggest that you contrast a loaded jump with an unloaded one - so you could do drop jumps unloaded and loaded jump squats for example 4x5 of each (change from exercise to the other). Doing this should enable you to recruit more fast twitch fibre which should boost power output and have a longer-term positive training effect, if this way of training or similar is included into training relatively regularly. You could even add some spring over 30m into this workout to really develop transference between the activities. You'd be doing a form of French Contrast Training.
