I fish the Tennessee River in Northern Alabama. I always wear my life jacket now whether I’m underway, trolling or sitting still. Im 68 years old and I know I would struggle to get back in my boat if I fell out, especially with current running high as it does through the winter months, and I don’t swim anymore. I know how to swim, but if I’m 500 yards from the bank, I’m probably not making it without a life vest. At least a dozen people die in that river every year and none of them were wearing life jackets.

Especially when the water is below 60 degrees, hypothermia wouldn’t take you out trying to swim even a couple hundred yards and you might cramp up also! If 68 also and have much more respect for the water these days and especially competition water skiing when I was younger, we took a lot of incredibly hard falls reach speeds around 50-55 mph when making a cut, however, we knew when we were out of control and could let go of the rope immediately and turn to our side. In a fast bass boat, or any boat, being ejected is a huge concern as you could become injured hitting something on your way out of the boat! Have a great day!

You said it right it’s a lifesaver! Everyone should be wearing one! 😊

I was fishing a bass tournament about 10 years ago out of one of those non-flippable kayaks. The wind was really blowing but I had plenty of time in the craft and was confident I was safe - until a large wave pushed the back up while a wave that just hit the nearby dam hit from the off side. I was suddenly upside down in 14 feet of water. My Mustang inflatable vest brought me right back up. Wear them but check the cartridge on a regular basis.

That is a good lifejacket. I hike the cushion behind the head to help keep your head out of the water.

Several thoughts. First, I'm glad to see that thing works. It is fairly cheap and sold on Amazon. I see a lot of people wearing them and I have one as well I wear when I'm fishing by myself. Second, that is NOT what I want if I were doing high speed boating. (70mph is outright stupid IMO but that's another discussion) If you are thrown out at those speeds quoted, you will be most assuredly unconscious and most likely injured and unable to self rescue. I want a high quality full strap on vest. This thing would likely be twisted up at best, and possible ripped off at worse. Assuming it did work, unconscious with your face bobbing barely above water isn't a good combo.
@alwayslearningsomethingnew71156 ай бұрын
Face bobbing in the water is a lot better.

Couldn't agree more about the 70mph thing...just drive on the highway & splash water in your face if that is what you want

Like he said these are mainly for when you’re hauling ass, they’re not recommended for an all around fishing life vest. It makes a non threatening accident a pain in the ass, trying to get back in the kayak, the more traditional vest rated for more than your weight is ideal, with plenty of pockets, once you get used to it you’ll enjoy all the extra storage and how quick you can function with everything you need right at your chest.
@SilencedByYoutube4 ай бұрын
No that's not what he said. These are actually for all-around fishing. They do not recommend using these in very high speed situations.

I just used my new one for the first time today while Bass Fishing and noticed the Velcro on the Right Strap kept grabbing my Fishing Shirt and snagging it. Basically ruined an expensive nice Fishing Shirt that’s made for keeping you cool in the sun. Has anyone else noticed the Velcro on the Straps of these types of PFD Vests snagging on your clothes? Safety is more important than a Shirt but I don’t want to ruin nice shirts every time I wear the PFD Jacket. Is this the norm for this type of vest or I’m I missing something? I will look again and double check to make sure I have the seams of the Velcro lined up. Thanks

They certainly work, but with all the gear and steel toe boots common to many workers it might only make your bouyancy neutral thus you still need to know how to tread water just incase.

I think you have to change the cartridge yearly so you can test it when the year is up before changing.

Make sure you read the "instructions " closely. A CPO kindly pointed out mine, and most others sold have a coast guard rate. They are to be worn at all times while on the boat. They are not just to be worn while the motor is running, but all the time. Check it out.

Wouldn't be coast guard approved if they didnt

I did just that, I purposely fell out of my boat acting like I was knocked out. It took about a second but it inflated and immediately upright Ed me. I dint go out in my boat ever with out it on. Now only my open boat with tiller motor, I don’t on my pontoon boat, water is too cold where I live to not wear it.
@brianseage5452 Жыл бұрын
Vital to have the strap fitted that comes from the waist belt through the legs and fastens on the waist belt at the front. Without it, if the life jacket is incorrectly fitted the life jacket may come off leaving the wearer to drown.

You would have to jettison any standard life jacket if you are trapped under the boat , but then , if the boat has positive flotation you could simply climb on the motor or hold on if you didn’t have the jacket on . Speaking for myself , I put mine on before launching , and keep it on till I’m out of the water , if I’m kayaking I use a Manuel inflate. Or a standard jacket.

It might be an idea to learn to swim. Then you need not wear such an awful thing when on a calm lake.
