Video Overview:
A commenter asked why I said that bread routes were a nightmare for some owners and also told me he had heard that running a bread route required long hours. This video explains why there's seldom a business that is suited for everyone, and that the desire to make more money than a route can provide causes a lot of angst from owners. Also, it explains why some routes take a ton of time (and he's right that they take long hours), but some take much less time, and why there's never a blanket answer for how many hours it takes to own a bread route successfully.

My wife and I are thinking about buying a route and running it together. Im planning on dropping the product and ordering while my wife does the merchandising and pull ups.

I see a lot of people run their bread routes just like that. I'm actually considering getting another bread route (I've owned them in the past as well) and doing something pretty much running things in the exact same way you've described. One the guys I know that owns bread routes used to run his route with his kid and now his son is fully in the business now too. Pretty cool stuff.

I don’t own a route. I work for a company. 18 years most of us started at 4:30 am. A few at 4:00 am. Now most of us start between 1:00 am and 3:00 am. I usually start at 1:30 am. Most days are 11-12 hours. Holidays as much as 15 hours.

Cool - well, not that 15 hour day part. :) What company do you work with? Why not buy a route or you prefer the company life (sometimes that's way better than some of the routes out there for sale!)?

Thanks for the feedback - this is a cool idea. I've got some ideas that I can hit on, but if you want to let me know what sort of specific questions you think you may have, I'll do my best to include them in the upcoming video.

Just found your channel this morning at 3:18am. I understand each week grosses $x and then you subtract cogs. What about gas, business insurance, truck repair expense? I currently deliver via Ubereats and Doordash in a Prius so my gas / insurance expenses are minimal compared to a bread route and diesel box truck. Do you have any knowledge about Bon Apptetit routes? They seem to have a 1x valuation, making the payback period quite attractive. It also seems they could be performed with a cargo van and not a box truck, depending on the size of the route.

@@stanislavrukhman1887 I'm not sure exactly what you mean about routes specific to MA. But maybe you're just asking about how territory can affect a route. I'll work on a video for you regarding how I think about territory when it comes to picking a route and I'll post the link here when it's done.

Finished the video a while back but just now found your comment to give you the link. This video goes over all the things that I consider when evaluating territory - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn3IhKiihap0bdk Hope this helps!

Can contracts get taken away?
@RoutetycoonVideos
@RoutetycoonVideos 6 ай бұрын
Yes, but you get warned essentially most of the time (unless you start doing criminal stuff or something insane). Most of the time when contracts start to look like they may be terminated, there's time to sell the route to someone else (which is why evaluating these deals is so important!) or just to fix whatever problem you're having that caused the company to threaten to terminate. So, yes, termination is a VERY real thing and it does happen, but thankfully in the bread route world it's not all that frequent by a long shot.

Do you own any routes at the moment?
@RoutetycoonVideos
@RoutetycoonVideos 10 ай бұрын
I used to personally own them years ago. I mostly stay in the coaching / training / evaluation space at this point though. I still have a number of friends in the bread route world and do a lot of evaluations for people looking at them. Most of the people that love bread routes are morning people (to an extreme obviously, since most routes start around 3-4am). They're great in a lot of ways: Easy to finance, low valuation multiple, low risk the seller can screw you (presuming you know how to evaluate them), reasonably stable income, low stress, flexible hours, and a beautifully simplistic business...BUT I was a groggy mess when I ran those routes - my body just couldn't ever get used to waking up at 4am. But a lot of people love waking up that early, it's just not for me. If there was a route that started at 10am somehow magically, I'd buy a route in a heartbeat. ;) Are you thinking of buying a bread route?
