It's a matter of the manufacturer having the cost of the initial design factored into the price whereas the copies don't have any design work and they only have parts to pay for. It's not a problem until people stop designing things.

I installed a $20.00 Amazon rectifier/regulator on my kingquad 700. Its voltage output was good, but it went into a meltdown after 2-hours of use. Ended up putting out for a factory one, Suzuki, $120.00, now I have many hours without a failure.
@toddthemitchell18 күн бұрын
The dc-dc charger should be connected to your starting battery. You may also be drawing too many amps from the regulator for both batteries. Try and lower the charging amps on the dcdc and see if you get different results. Connecting the dcdc to the starting battery will only draw power from it when the voltage is high enough to charge the lithium, or you can put a relay on the ignition power and use the relay outputs to switch the dcdc on and off.

If you pop for lithium and a Victron, the $100 more for Yamaha part is small change compared to all you have spent upgrading the boat. IMHO. Merry Christmas.
@hogfish388118 күн бұрын
It’s mostly likely your lithium battery is demanding charge close to 100A and your rectifier can only supply 50A or so. Or you said you had dc to dc charger? Maybe it’s made for lead acid type of battery and need to see some resistance? Try connecting in parallel regular battery to your lithium, that may help you solve the issue
@BornAgainBoating14 күн бұрын
Yeah, I think most set ups are for use with a lead start battery and a lithium house battery and the DC-DC is pulling charge power from the start battery, but we're trying to do it without the lead battery. I just ordered some resistors to see if that puts a "load" on it making the DC-DC work properly :/

the problem with the cheap ones is that they are very rpm-dependent, that means voltage may exceed safe levels when you throttle up. And while it's sort of ok on a lead acid battery, the lithium one might get damaged, esp without dc-dc converter

Most outboards don’t have a true regulated voltage output, and they need a load in order to keep things balanced. A 20 watt 10 ohm load resistor should work with that older outboards amperage output, but that’s easily calculable with ohms law. Once you do that, the DC-DC charger should get the proper voltages. I’ve put the resistors before the DC charger.

If the BMS stops charging the Lithium battery, will that cause your rectifier to fail on over voltage?
@BornAgainBoating14 күн бұрын
Yeah, if the BMS shuts off the engine will shut off because it will disconnect from the engine :/ but if it just stops accepting charge voltage but stays connected and putting out power, the stator rec/reg will do who knows what. Because they should see the battery voltage which is what they use to change output power, like if they don't see a battery or a weak battery, they go to full output to try and get that voltage back to where they want to see it. So idk lol still trying to figure it out lol

@Daniel-f6t4v17 күн бұрын
They work great...until they don't. And usually fail with no warning. I've had better luck with DB Electrical but even they don't last as long as OEM. If it's something non-critical (trim relay, etc) then you can save a few bucks but not worth getting stranded.
@fmb-fishingmeansbusiness18 күн бұрын
This is what I want to know, do the new dual purpose lifep04 batteries need dc/dc charger protection or not! Let us know what Victron thinks!
@BornAgainBoating14 күн бұрын
Victron only sends you to a "dealer" and they "troublshoot" or give you FAQ's to research you problem unless you bought the DC-DC from them lol so not much info on that. I think it's not really the batteries that need the DC-DC but rather the engine's charging system. Most newer engines have the alternators and rec/regs set up to be able to work without the DC-DC. It just gets tricky on older stuff that has a stator on it :/ hints 2-strokes lol Still working on figuring it all out, pretty much anything will work with a DC-DC if you leave a lead acid start battery in and use a Li battery for the house with the DC-DC in between. That set up is virtually universal with any set up. :/
