6:30. Why is everyone saying this…if the $400 chip upgrade FORCES an additional $400 upgrade, it’s no longer “just” $400. With availability going out to February on some configurations, I wish KZbin testers would just compare preconfigured models as that’s what most will end up getting if they can’t wait two months.

What I have found to work especially well is to have the M1 max on a 14 inch laptop which is highly portable. I use it with 2 32 inch monitors. With products like Premiere Pro, the various panels can be spread out in a custom way across the large 32 inch monitors giving you the real estate you need while having the portability of a 14 inch laptop.

I think there's different balanced options to be had, that's one of them. If you go with Max, You will have better performance with 16" model with better cooling. If you go with 32GB instead of 64GB in Your Max, better balance is 24 cores, because when 32 GPU cores would really be needed, memory less than 64GB might throttle the performance. So the 16#/Max/24GPU/32GB is a sweet pot

@@puccarts Hey there - from the tests that a lot of people have run, the 14" MBP is unable to sufficiently cool the 32-core GPU to take advantage of the additional power that it could provide, prior to the chip throttling due to heat constraints. In other words, you would be paying additional money for hardware that couldn't necessarily be used to its full capacity.

Great Video Tyler! However the spec that you recommended for the photographer's M1 Pro is $400 cheaper than the standard M1 Max 16 inch configuration and you're getting 2x the GPU cores for that $400. As more cameras come out and higher resolutions become more available, I could see that $400 being worth it for Professionals.
@4KLive
@4KLive 3 жыл бұрын
I will say is a good $400 well spend. On the other hand in the next 3-5 year the resolution will only double from 45MP to say 90Mp. It will not be difficult to deal with the cheaper one. That is still wise. Video edit is a total different story.

It depends on your workflow AND what you value. Depending on the app AND what you're measuring, GPU power may (or may not) be the bottleneck. As an example, it seems that Capture One Pro export benefits more from GPU power than Lightroom. But you may use a different app, don't value export time but other stuf that is less GPU dependant, etc.

@@4KLive There are already a lot of studio pros using well over 100 megapixels btw. And sport pros will continue to use the minimum mpx required because of faster AF. The video is actually on point. Thank you Tyler! Just my 2 cents as someone who got kind of tricked by other reviews to cancel M1 Max and go for baseline 16inch M1 Pro - it’s surprisingly easy to make this machine choke in Premiere. My timelines consist of 10bit 4K footage, occasional simple after effects animation, colour grading and it rarely plays smoothly without using 1/4th quality. Is it usable? 11-months later, I finally got my 16" MBP. Everyone has a use case, and as a photographer, my use case is for a minimum of 4tb, but ideally 8tb of storage. In Nov 2022 (time of writing), the prices for refurbished MBP's have dropped. Once I identified a 16" with 8tb of storage, the price increase to get the maxed-out version made "future proofing" an easy choice. 16" M1 Max, 10/32-core, 64gb RAM, and 8tb - $5,200 via Apple Refurbished Store.

I thought to buy a new one and order the MBP M1 Max, but this all seems to be a tremendous waste of time, and heading into the $7000+ (Canadian = approx $5800 USD) range seems unnecessary. It very specifically addresses my main pain-points with my Intel 2020 13" - always running out of SSD space with 512gb due to scratch disks filling up, high memory pressure, and virtual memory eating up SSD space even more. Not to mention it burning through the battery in 1.5 hours if I'm working in Lightroom and Photoshop. For example, as a novice in every content creation work, I do pretty well with a MBA M1 256GB, 8GB Ram and an external ssd; but I know that the time may come when I’ll need something beyond that, I think there’s where M1 pro and Max come out; but when I get to that point, I’m surely going to the M1 Max or the future equivalent of it.

Yeah, to me that's the biggest argument AGAINST buying something to be future-proof... If you can't take full advantage of the hardware now, IMO it's actually better to save your money because when your skills grow to the point where you need the extra power, better hardware will be available then.

Literally did the same! I think the M1 Pro is enough to handle my workflow for the next 3-5 years. No plans on shooting 8K and I don’t mind waiting for another 30 seconds for an export. I think M1 Pro is enough for what the majority needs! Anyways, appreciate the recommendations from Tyler though!

@@diverman1023 Wow. I've read and heard about the M1 Pro and M1 Max in terms of battery life - usually with the M1 Pro reported as having the higher battery life. Again, not demonstrated just mentioned. I've also read and heard the opposite, i.e. the M1 Max outlasting the M1 Pro - with 16". The main concern I have with that is the limit of 32GB unified memory/ram - not that I require more to get my work done - it's more of a just-in-case motive, if/when using a lot of amp simulator plug-ins recording music. Now I'm hesitating and making excuses to delay pulling the trigger. {Recently edited for clarity}

Where have you seen any evidence of the M1 Max outlasting the M1 Pro (both 16”)? I have not seen that in any reviews and it’s the main reason why I’m strongly leaning towards the Pro (for the better battery and no foreseeable benefit in my photo editing from the extra GPU cores in the Max). If there is real evidence of the opposite being true for battery life, I haven’t seen it but would definitely want to. Thanks

@@FloridaHerper Demonstrable verified evidence I have not seen - only so-called "user experienced" comments on KZbin. So it actually means nothing. Still my main "concern" if any is the limit of 32GB of ram given the M1 Pro chip. Do you think such a trade-off on battery would be worth the extra ram/unified memory?
@FloridaHerper
@FloridaHerper 3 жыл бұрын
I see. Personally, I know that 32 GB is more than enough unified memory for me so if the Max’s extra GPU cores will not benefit my photography workflow in any way, then I’d just be getting the Max to have it and at the price of less battery life from every test I’ve seen.

Creators need creativity. I am working as a designer for past 3 years now. And this year I purchased an M1 Macbook Pro, and it has been incredible for me. But you know, as a creator specifically designer, your laptop is just a tool and the specs are just luxury. And you can make do with any laptop above $700 for being a creator, anything above that is just a luxury to have. So do you need m1 pro to be a creator? Nope, but it is nice luxury to have. A lot of my colleagues use laptops much slower than my M1 yet we call design for a Multi Million dollar companies without any problems what so ever. These video titles are very much clickbaits.

Is that enough to justify it? I have no clue. After using it for a couple days though I don't really care about having spent the extra money since it seems like it's built like a tank internally and will handle any workload I have for it. @alexanderbowen2218
@alexanderbowen2218 2 жыл бұрын
@@Everyday.Maverick I got the 1tb storage option since I cannot expand it later. I offload old projects onto an external drive so I am not worried about the storage long term. But the laptop itself I am really happy with. I am a windows person. My main computer is an alienware x17 for gaming, but even the decently specced x17 cannot compete with the macbook for certain tasks. I have had photoshop and premiere pro files stutter and sometimes slow down for a minute on the x17 but nothing like that has happened on the mac. Battery life is great for me coming from windows laptops (even though I got the max which has less battery overall than other macs, it was still a major improvement over windows and it lasts me a full day working). The only thing I will say is that Maya Arnold rendering works better on the X17 since autodesk STILL has not optimized for M1. This is really disappointing to me since a lot of my work is 3D modelling. However all the other applications I use it for: audio engineering and video/photo editing its the best thing I've used. If I need to do models in Maya it is not bad though. I can definitely still do it and renders are still alright. So I do not take the X17 with me instead if I am working out of the office since the performance gain is not worth losing portability, battery life, etc I dont know if youre looking at buying one but I would wait until the m2 pro and maxs are announced in october. the m1 versions might drop in price for you or you might find the m2 pro aor max to fit your needs better since it will be updated. But yeah overall this is the best workstation for creative application ive ever used and this is coming from someone who hates using mac os. Thanks for asking dude 🤘 hope that helps

It sounds like it might be worth trying to hold on just a few more weeks though just to see what happens in terms of M2 releases!

I can wait I waited a whole month for 1 month reviews to make a decision and it was worth the wait I can definitely wait again. Plan on keeping it for 8 years plus or until it stop working like my 2014 MacBook Pro that stop working three months ago after owning it for 7 years it stopped working because it was lagging n freezing then decide to shut down because It was not enough space like every second. I toke me like 6hr sometimes just to edit one video seriously it was so laggy and about 2hr just to export and when I was done exporting the video n finally get to watch it and realize I made a mistake I would have to go back an edit for hrs because it laggy then export for hr.’if it wasn’t for that I would have kept it or it shutting down. So don’t let nobody judge for wanting to future proof for that little head room

That's cool that you're going all in. Similarly, a few months ago my late 2011 15.4" MBP won't complete loading, or at best goes to a green checkered pattern screen and stays there with the fans whirring louder than a portable AC unit. And my 2008 MacPro 8-core simply won't power up anymore. As of last week, nothing but a flashing green power light. The thing is I can't wait until mid-March (Apple's ETA) on a customized 16" MBP. I need to have a computer available ASAP. I've already contemplated buying an M1 Air 16GB/1TB, since that could be delivered within 4 days, but that 13.3" when not using an external monitor? Whew! Yikes! Anyways, there's my set of 1st world problems in a nutshell.

Great video Tyler. One of the questions I have is getting a configuration to future proof, meaning I would like to keep my laptop for 7-8 years before having to purchase a new one. I know that getting base 16" with 32GB of RAM should be good for long time, however, Adobe, etc, will most likely make major additions in the next few years that "could be" more memory intensive. I primarily work in Lightroom (90%), browsing and maybe create 4-5 videos a year. Would it be better to get 16core GPU with 32GB or just get 24Core with 64? I've seen some videos where benchmark tests show minimal gain between 16Core GPU vs 24Core GPU (especially with Lightroom and 4K video)

Hey fellow Canuck...I need to upgrade from a late 2013 27" imac to something faster! I want to wait for Apple to announce the new iMacs in 2022 (with M1pro/M1Max or better chips) but I can only afford one editing computer...my budget allows for the 16" M1pro base model with 16GB and I would get the 1TB...I use Premiere ONLY and your other video comparing the big three edit software seems to suggest that is now "safe" to use Premiere with the M1 pro/M1Max - sure FCP will be faster but Premiere has come a long way. Correct? I hope so because Premiere is what I use exclusively. I would edit 4k from sony A7iii/a6400- nothing too heavy really...one or two layers...no multicam really....some AF...you suggest M1max but I just can't stretch my budget. Do you think it's worth waiting for Apple to announce new iMacs? when does Apple announce new products? January? February? I would prefer a iMac but I fear Apple will charge too much for them. I don't need a super computer just a M1pro similar to the MBP...although I could always use the MBP as a desktop but I would need a 4K monitor..which adds to the expense...argh...Decisions...Decisions! Thanks for your opinion!

Tyler, I kind of think Apple is still optimizing and researching bringing out the best and stable performance for the M1 Max line up. Most of the benchmarks and tests exhibits M1 Max 24 core performance is slightly better than or similar to the M1 Max 32 core performance. Why would Apple do that? Wouldn't people go buy the 24 core version than the 32 core if that is the case. Could this be temporary? I think Apple is still under their testing phase and could turn the plates any time giving the 32 core the place it deserves being the most expensive and top of the line model. What are your thoughts?
