There's always more to be discoverd or looked at in dark souls games-I knew the fake trees could be killed, but never would have thought that they might be moving around. Especially in dark souls 1 and 2, there are so many odd, experimental systems and ideas, like miracle resonance or the rat covenant, that are sadly rare in modern games.

When Mr Miyazaki was sitting in his small development office, maybe he shared it, maybe since he was director he had his own office. Do you think when he sat down and showed his animators the concept of the witch of izalith fight where a tree sprouts giant flaming claws and scythe... Ya know... do you think he knew that in 10-20 years his games would be so over digested by the videogame community that he would have entire essays on the design of the trees in his game?
@XenoxygeneКүн бұрын
When I spend time on small details in my videos, it's always in the hopes that someone, somewhere will notice and it will make it just a bit better for them. So maybe in a way, this is the same here. Where they didn't plan on people over analyzing every detail, but they still put in that extra bit of effort on the off chance that someone would!
@MrHeorheКүн бұрын
@@Xenoxygenelol when I commented I was halfway through, I was still expecting a joke about how the bed of chaos is a fucked up magic tree and doesn't count but I'm genuinely surprised you didn't even mention it in the video. Very fun video :) I see the world that sits upon these trees as coming later. Like the tree didn't necessarily grow through the land, the land formed upon the trees over a very long time, and the trees were strong enough to keep these lands aloft. Fantasy universe sort of stuff but kind of different than the standard Also, did not know that there are roots at the bottom of the Kiln. Neat!
@Xenoxygene21 сағат бұрын
That's a really cool way of looking at it, and would completely fit the idea of each Archtree potentially supporting a different world entirely
@nutherefurlong21 сағат бұрын
@@Xenoxygene I tend to think it's just a single world propped up by many trees, but I know that the lack of land above in other areas that would make Ash Lake dark don't seem to be there. Sunlight is sort of a theme, though, with false light and true light, so I don't think it has to obey physical reality, it's all a bit dreamlike. I do see why that hypothesis is there, and I entertained it briefly, but I feel like the many worlds thing they talk about in DS1 is partly there to justify multiplayer, and that also seems to be an overlapping potentiality rather than physically separate places. Hard to say for sure
@Xenoxygene21 сағат бұрын
@nutherefurlong I've never gone too deep into the lore but I guess I might get more information on that when studying the trees of Dark Souls 2 and 3! Especially with areas like Things Betwixt that seem to really expand on this transition between realms in a way. Thank you for your help, I'll be sure to share my findings in the next video!

11:50 Somehow in all the years of lore, I never realized that the first flame was discovered in the core of an archtree. I never noticed the half-second before it starts zooming down the roots that the camera was going _into_ an archtree. OR that the Kiln was on top of the remnants of an archtree! Cool stuff

This video is great, thanks for giving more insights about such an overseen detail, which is instead crucial for the original vision of the game. Apparently Miyazaki said in an interview that he already had a fascination about the concept of trees and he had already used it in the past games

5:04 I actually have a very good example of this happening in my yard. We cut a large tree because it was about to fall anyways, and we kept the stump because it was too large and nobody wanted it. After a couple years, small branches of what it looks like to be a totally different tree started growing on it, and nowadays these branches are quite big although not very thick. It's honestly very impressive to look at.

on an unrelated note, if you want to get a better "dark souls lore voice", i recommend queueing up a bunch of those videos of pets being reunited with veterans after not seeing them for years on a second monitor by your script, and playing them all in reverse so it looks like the dogs are being abandoned. really helps to develop the "1-hp voice" that clinches a melodramatic reading of the fextralife wiki
