@LiveOutLoud3218 ай бұрын
@@dmarsubThat would be a super interesting comparison!! I think it’s possible men might just do equally better if swapped but I’m not sure. It’s not impossible that other factors could exist that would skew results in favor of women generally speaking or on average when it comes to naming public figures. For example, maybe women are more aware of people/names due to societal expectations or other factors or it’s even possible that (again I’m not sure) women’s brains are generally wired in a way that is advantageous to some level or degree. Or maybe it would just work out like you’re theorizing which is possible too.

So, obviously the reason why so many streamers were named was that the participants were, themselves streamers. Since they were friends with other streamers, they could simply name their friends which is much easier than coming up with actresses or historical figures. I would be interested to see how the results would change with non-streamer participants, I imagine streamers would be a less popular category and times would go up overall.

I also don't count names where I know the image from a movie but I have no clue who the actor is. this is a very real showcase of the very real "invisible" sexism on day to day life tbh; even if each of these men individually isn't sexist, the environment that led to these results kinda speaks volumes to the communities fostered online
@benrex77757 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. There is the possibility that men just care less about names in general. Or there is the possibility that men care about topics which have mostly men in them. For example I like devlogs. A devlog is when someone makes videos on a game which they develop as a hobby. This is a small enough scene that there is no societal pressure to push or restrict anyone. And women are about 5% of the people there. So if I watch 20 devloggers, then one of them is likely to be a woman. Also the chance of a man having that as a hobby is 20 times higher. I also like other topics with similar ratios of men to women. Since most of my interests happen to be niche topics that mostly only men participate in, I know a lot more men. This also applies into the other direction. Let's take a person who has sewing as a hobby. I have no clue what the man-woman ratio is there, but are they sexist for knowing more women? If you have a somewhat representative study you should do three things. 1) Also do the same test with the same people, but ask for 100 men. If the male average time is still lower then that shows they are just worse at remembering names in general. 2) Make the participants more diverse. Currently they are all streamers. If you want to have a statistic that means anything then you should have random participants. 3) Do some proper statistical analysis. To make that point I will copy another comment from this comment section: _@destitution5700_ _I think that using the arithmetic mean is kinda a poor choice given this dataset and the variance that lies within it. I think that using the median for the average would be a more fair and better representation of the data. This would put the overall average as __17:14__, the male average as __17:17__, and the female average as __15:19_

vtuber skip goes crazy, when i tried i got stuck and then rapidfire to the end i named all the vtubers i could think of lol

I didn't think they counted, since I thought of them as fictional characters played by real people.

I gave up. Got a lot of athletes(from wrestling, cycling, and soccer) and some historic figures, but I sucked at Celebrities because I knew a lot of faces but couldn't remember any of their names.
@benrex77757 ай бұрын
I don't think I could pass this challenge. I'm bad at memorizing, I'm bad at memorizing names and my hobbies are mostly male dominated fields. For example I don't care about musicians, actors, sports, tv personalities and politicians. I guess I could score a few points by going into religious figures, but the female devloging scene on youtube is not that grand. Similar thing with the worldview conversation or historical youtubers. Even at work, I usually have to hear a persons name several times, as well as seeing it written down, until I can memorize it. Since the youtuber names are written down, they at least have that going for them, but it also requires that I need to follow them for a while to remember them.

as a man i feel that i would fair as well in naming 100 women as i would 100 men, it'd take me fucking hours

I was doing a naming 100 Asians challenge and got tired at like 50 but over 80% were women. Naming 100 women sounds so easy.

I did this but I was doing both men and women at the same time with a friend and together we got 33 women and 113 men in like a 30 minute timespan

me and a friend tried at different times, i got about 15:35 and they got somewhere around 53 minutes. we're both nonbinary so i think the moral there is nonbinary people will either be pretty good or pretty bad and there is zero middle ground /j

@@AltraHapi If you know politicians then that is great, as by now it is pretty common to have plenty of female politicians.

I would be impressed if I was even able to name 100 people in general bro 💀. How are you supposed to remember anybodies name.
@benrex77757 ай бұрын
I could name more than 100 people in general, but a bunch of them are small youtubers with less than 10'000 subscribers and another bunch would be people I know personally but you can still google them thanks to the "about us" section on their company or university websites. But due to my interest the percentage of women among those people is low.

how else would this challenge work???
@benrex77757 ай бұрын
@@g.b.9799 historical figures, contributors to science, authors. There are many googleable people who are not celebrities. I could also name a bunch of people who I work for or who were professors at my university. They are googleable, especially if you allow linkedIn. But since streamers took up that challenge it is obvious that celebrities were the most popular people.
