Suffered for years with herniated discs, never ending leg pain etc, watched your video on proper bending, 2 weeks later pain was gone and it’s been a year, I can now deadlift and squat and live a normal life again, Thank you doc ! Your KZbin video gave me my life back ❤️

I’ve had multiple lumbar injuries, and recently had one of the worst ones right on Christmas weekend. Debilitating pain that I had to cancel my vacations. Tons of research, chiropractic visits, and even an MRI. Got 2 bulging discs one protruded L4-L5. I blame deadlifts for all this because that’s when I got my injuries. Besides that, this video was one of the most educational and eye opening explanations of the discs, bulging, and annular fibrosis as well (I have tears there). Thank you for that!

@@TheBeast-go2mm well the good thing is you feel no pain. My pain lasted about 2 months. Doctors referred me to physical therapists to help strengthen my core. That was all I could do and mentioned we can live with bulging or herniated discs and not even feel pain.

Hello, love your video as it really helped clear things up. I was recently diagnosed with a few bulged discs and I actually stopped doing deadlifts a few months ago because my back would flare up shortly afterwards. Can you make a video of exercises to avoid for someone with a bulged disc (providing alternatives would be appreciated). I saw videos online but they have conflicting information such as the squat or the leg press. Thank you

Thank you for the feedback. I would like to make a video and I appreciate the request. I'll get started on this video ASAP. In the meantime, my first thought is that burpees would be the worst exercise to do for a disc bulge. Front planks in general are not great either. Deadlifts are a great choice for rehab in mid to later phases, but in the early phases, it's not a great choice.

Hey. I've seen so many arguments that deadlift will/won't destroy your back. Many of them very sophisticated and given by experts. On both sides. I cannot evaluate them. I have not the knowledge. Is there any data on number of back injuries by people performing the deadlift? That would give an obvious answer.

It is very confusing. You're correct that there are very good arguments on both sides. To keep it short and sweet, but give quality information. It depends on the situation. Across the board, deadlifts are not good or bad. If someone has a current disc bulge or susceptibility to compression forces on the spine, the deadlift is not good for them, at least not until they heal and work on conditioning and building up to a deadlift. Deadlifts create a large muscle force activation in the low back muscles which translates to compression forces, which is not good for SOME people. However, for many people with instabilities, a very slow progression with deadlifts have been shown to help with their recurring low back pain. Here are some good research articles:Effective of an exercise program that includes deadlifts on low back pain. Fischer et.alA Biering-Sorensen test for hip and back extension greater than 60 was the best predictor for success Low initial pain intensity, less than 60 mm on a VAS with the second best predictor for success Welch et al

Any chance that after a while a disc bulge can get cured and after a long time .. to deadlift again?
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis

yes. you'll want to progressively load it, always taking note how you feel.

So are exercises like sit ups bad for you?
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis
@DrJeffreyOGuinSaintLouis 3 жыл бұрын
if you have a disc injury, sit ups are not recommended. if you're susceptible to disc injuries, sit ups are not good for your spine. Core stability exercises would be a better option. If your mostly interested in strong abs, your young with no spine condition, sit-ups are probably okay.

Hello doc, I recently deadlifted 50kgs for the past 2 weeks (2 times) And today when I did the last set,I felt a sudden slip on my lower back... Felt a pain immediately and whenever I bend forward,it's hard to bend forward. Previously I would easily deadlift 80kgs, But never felt like this. The pain is localised in my lower back now... My way of normal walking is slightly off... Should I see a doctor urgently or is this just a muscle tightness/soreness I experienced due to weight lifting?

If it's localized in your low back, it's likely not an urgent situation. If pain starts to radiate down your leg or especially if you experience loss of strength, I would see a specialist quickly.
