I’ve come across an online ad that makes these devices remotely from out of state. They send the patients putty-like material for impressions and walk the patients through how to take impressions in a video meeting. The patients send the impressions back and they will make the oral appliance in about 4 weeks. Do you think this remote way will work? Or is it important that the patient see the dentist in person and have impressions taken as well as possibly digital scans? I’m concerned I could end up with a device that doesn’t fit because I am not trained to take my own impressions. Thanks!

This is a great question! It would be best to look at the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine to locate a provider near you that you could turn to. In my experience oral appliance therapy is far more than obtaining a device. This therapy involves trouble shooting obstacles and adjustments to increase comfort and improve patient compliance. Longer term follow-up is also very important to prevent or manage side effects that often go unnoticed. Changes can occur to a bite, sometimes enough to warrant orthodontics to reverse the effects. These are often preventable with in person checks with your sleep disorders dentist. Good luck!

Dental device did not work for me. I kept waking up and staying awake for hours. I finally gave up and went to the CPAP machine and am sleeping much better. It’s definitely not hassle free but I am now sleeping.

I’m sorry a dental device did not work for you. Oral appliances work in about 70-80 % of patient cases. I’m very glad CPAP is working well for you! It too is a great device. Sometimes there’s some trouble shooting that can definitely help patients with oral appliances. But again, in other cases , they need other options.

Yes, I am scared when looking at my sleep breathing flow rate via Oscar, although the AHI stays low.

Is this an option for me if I wear a top denture plate? I have bottom teeth but no top teeth...

Yes, this may be an option for you but it would be best to be evaluated by an oral appliance provider dentist that also provides dentures as service. It can be more difficult if you have a lower arch denture though. Another option is to explore implant supported dentures.

I Take a lot of meds am and pm - I constantly have dry mouth and suck on something to give me a little moisture during the day and during the night. The Apgarde machine seems to make my mouth more dry because I am suppose to breath thru my nose and that dries out my mouth more, it seems. Would this do the same thing? Do you breathe through your nose of mouth with this?? I used to wear a nightguard many years ago. Is it the same as this product? i just want to sleep without sucking on lozenges all night because the dryness is go uncomfortable Thank you.

Many oral appliance patients do report an improvement in dry mouth issues . An AADSM qualified dentist should be able to trouble shoot this area with you. For many oraldevices you can breathe through your nose or mouth but there are things to help you keep closed when wearing an oral appliance which often does improves dry mouth. How do you know if it's working?

At the beginning devices are advanced (adjusted) by most patients at home until their symptoms all stop or their jaws can’t be advanced further. Then depending on original diagnosis it is often best to have a follow-up sleep test with oral appliance inserted.

How much should I expect to pay for this device?

The fee for oral appliances vary depending on the location, experience of treatment facility. Other things may influence costs like device chosen. But it is not uncommon for fees to range in the $2,000 -4000 . Medical insurance usually reimburses a considerable portion, especially if you find a dentist is network, which may be challenging but very helpful.

Right now I just had my dentist fit me Tuesday. Before insurance kicks in it’s $450. My dental insurance should knock a lot off that price

They want to give me this... I already have dry mouth And seeing it can loosen teeth? I’m getting teeth done Ridiculous 2500 for somwthign that may not work or last long and causes issues Cpap I can’t tolerate Been battling sleep issues since 18 I’m 32 And I’m on tons of meds and only sleeping 5 hours tops

We are sorry you are struggling. Teeth and gums need to be healthy to accommodate an oral device. If they are and you have a knowledgeable dental provider, side effects are preventable and can be life-changing. Often the dry mouth can actually be improved. Most medical insurances do reimburse or cover this, averaging 50-100 percent coverage if the provider is in network. Depending on your apnea diagnosis and anatomical airway, there is also the Inspire surgical option. Best of luck!

@@mysleepdevice3584 thank you for this I truly appreciate it They did mention surgery Deviated septum turbinate is big too (But I keep hearing empty nose syndrome so I never went with it) And they mentioned removing tonsils all that and the uvula (Heard if they remove uvula food and water can come out the nose and it controls the moisture in the throat...) No clue what to do I am getting my teeth looked at and possibly fixing the 4 front With bonding and stuff ... I think my teeth are healthy other than cosmetically looking little bad Gums bleed when flossing or brushing tough Not too sure why Thank you again 🙏🏻
