In this video:
A survey of about 2000 British dog owners conducted in early 2017 found that around 40% of dog owners admitted to leaving the radio on when they left the house so that their dog wouldn’t be lonely, while another 32% admitted that they did the same thing, just with the TV. In yet another British study, this time in 2015, it was found that 38% of those respondents left the radio on and 22% the TV. Whichever study you look at there, this practice is shockingly common, at least in Britain. But do your pets like this?

After my dog got older he started getting really nervous at being left alone when I went out and often ended up wetting himself while I was gone. First time I tried leaving the radio on and I come home to find him snoring on his favourite chair. Honestly that's all the evidence I ever needed to know the answer to this question.

"Cats don't get separation anxiety" Tell that to my little house panther who sits and screams outside of any door that separates him and his humans. And yes, this includes the bathroom door. All showers are followed by a solid 10 minutes of complaints from our cat. Likewise, he always wants to be in the same room as everyone else, and if one of us (me or my boyfriend) goes to bed without the other the cat will come out and give the person who is still awake shit for not coming to bed. Mr. Moo has strong opinions, and you will hear ALL OF THEM.

Cats do suffer separation anxiety, I'm sad to report. I've had to move in and out of my parent's place several times, and I've been told my cats still stop in front of my room and wander up and down the halls yowling for me (probably because I pretty much always responded to them meowing and yowling). It's really sad.

I adopted my cat as a kitten who was left on my patio. He was about 5 weeks old. At first he was hiding and hissing. But after a day of that, it popped into my head to start mewing at him, which I did. As soon as I did, he came right to me. I think my making that sound said to him that although I was kind of big, and lacking fur, I was just some strange-looking variety of cat after all and therefore must have been o.k. and was not going to hurt him or eat him or anything. Now, he is 6 years old and of course running the house!

I’m taking this with a grain of salt: If I sing my cats tend to think I sound like a distressed cat (soprano range-no it isn’t me lol), but when I played Johnny Cash my one cat immediately investigated and rubbed against the speakers. But if I sing or play for my bird, she immediately wants to sing and dance along. Pop and light rock don’t have any “noticeable effects” which is actually not a bad thing. If classical music plays, however, they flatten their ears or stare with this look of “...REALLY?!” or completely vacate the room. (The bird just yells or screams vs squealing or chirping if it’s pop or 50s rock.) And I also have an easier time getting the cats to respond to basic commands and praise than the dogs I’ve had over the years ever have. Oh they’ll cry and test the boundaries, but they get the hint and do it my way since I’m more stubborn than they are. (I also talk in a much lower register than I sing...so again like with the JC song, it isn’t a case of “they struggle with those frequencies”...especially since the cats especially love carrying on “conversations” with their mixed vocalizations)

EarthChickadee My cats aren’t TV watchers. No interest in nature docs or aquarium screensavers back when those existed. They barely show interest in those For Cats apps where you fish or squash bugs. For them TV/Movies are “hey look! The hooman stopped moving!” and they take up space next to my feet or on the arms and backs of furniture. They also aren’t impressed with skype/facetime despite having some pretty significant separation anxiety/depression. (My conure, however, loves it.) The most reaction I’ll get from them is them trying to stare down charcoal lion art projects, give me dirty looks with cat/big cat videos, and try to get to the Distressed Kitten with kitten rescue videos. They just prefer tactile and maybe scent related stimulation. Or trying to mimick/observe the humans and other household pets. (I kid you not? But my cat just tried to baracade my door with her scratching post-it’s small, I have hardwood floor so it slides, and she’s seen me do that to keep the other cat from entering through her catdoor at dinnertime. (The lock broke off ages ago.) (I swear...this cat scares me sometimes... (she reeeeaaaalllly doesn’t like the house guest’s snoring.))

I'll just paste my comment here :) This and as usual scientific research is just pointless. The reason is that they are looking for something they don't need to, to leave a TV or radio on for your dog/s (most if not all cats really don't care) is so they are not in complete silence, not to stop them getting lonely or relax them as such. Try it yourself sit in a room in complete silence and see how long it takes for you to get bored and frustrated, for your senses to heighten and hear every noise from outside or the neighbours, for dogs it's worse. For some dogs (definitely mine), it will make them wonder/think you or someone is coming home and that can cause stress, especially in dogs that suffer from any amount of separation anxiety, some dogs will just sleep mostly, but why not at least have a radio on just out of kindness.

@Kris Nicholson and my comment said that is why some noise in the house is good, it will mask some noises your dog will hear that may make them think you are coming home. Regardless of weather your oet gets anxious or not, I feel its cruel to leave them In total silence, I leave the light on too if I know it will be dark before I'm home. How would you like to be forced to be in a dead space, possibly in the dark too, with only your thoughts/ambient, strange noises all around you? Many people have owned animals all of their lives and still have no clue to their needs and well being. I'm not saying you are one of those of course, I've never met you.

This was very enlightening! Thank you for covering this topic. I have studied audio production and music composition. I am always interested in anything falling into these areas. Good to know that animals will respond to musical stimulus when it is matched to their biology. It would not be a far stretch to say that we create music as a means of expression tied to our own forms of communication and our biology as the human species. Would be interesting to see if other animals exhibit similar drives to such expression. I'd love to see more information on that!

When I had guinea pigs I used to play smooth jazz whenever I went to work or school. There was a noticeable effect. When I left music on they seemed to be less stressed and it just became part of the daily ritual. If I ever forgot to play it they were irritable when I got home and actually ate/drank less during the day. After about two years of this if they ever heard me pick up my keys they would squeak at me until I turned the music on. Interestingly they preferred slower instrumental music over fast lyrical music. Also they were more interested in Bach than Beethoven.

You know that they are nocturnal animals, right? You might have just kept them awake during the day so they ate more then :D
@Matthew_Troll
@Matthew_Troll 3 жыл бұрын
@@derAtze guinea pigs are neither nocturnal or diurnal, they tend to sleep in short bursts and for a total of about 4-6 hours per day adjusting to whatever schedule they are on. What is more important is keeping a consistent daily routine because they become accustomed to that schedule and changing it stresses them out. Like I said there was a noticeable effect on my piggies mood if I didn’t play their music for them. They also got used to weekdays/weekends so if I was home during a different than normal timeframe they always gave me a “why are you here?” look. They really are quite smarter than most people give them credit for and they definitely have unique personalities to boot. Other rodents like hamsters and chinchillas are definitely nocturnal though so messing with them during the day is not good for them.

I rapidly rub my thumb across my fingers to make a higher-pitched noise. Makes it easy to point her to specific things too. Doesn't work as well at a distance, but she's pretty good about knowing when I'm outside unless the wind is really loud. I usually call out to her at normal-ish volumes but raised pitch when I'm looking for her. Realistically, cats can hear female voices pretty well, although they have trouble hearing lower-pitched male voices. They *can* hear almost as low as humans, but they hear much better at like 500 Hz and above, so males typically get a better response by speaking at a higher-than-normal pitch and some females can benefit from it. Typical male voices are 85-180 Hz, while females are 165-255 Hz. We emit harmonic frequencies considerably higher than that, but they're harder to hear.

No. It actually makes high tones, too, called harmonics or overtones. Ours too. Any discipline is delivered in a low tone, starting with the name of the cat in trouble. Our Jack hisses when I'm on the warpath (his reaction to being scared, not pissed) but as soon as he hears me call another cat's name he relaxes, understanding he's not in the shit. I could tell them No in a high pitched voice and nothing happens, but tell them Yes in a low pitched voice and they scrunch down thinking they're in trouble.

probably because you always do it the same way so they've learnt to asociate it with it's consequenses. In other words, you've unintentionally trained them, much like they can eventually learn to pay attention to colour they've learnt what "no" in a low pitch means

They associate tone of voice with the mood of the person speaking. You know, like how they learned to cater their meows to sound like human babies crying to get our attention.

At night, I have an Amazon Echo playing new age instrumental music in the service porch, which is where my dog gets locked up for bedtime. I even made a routine for it, called "Dog bedtime," which has it say, "You're a good dog!" and then the music starts.

My cats always go to the room with music on. They like the chill/lounge sound. Lots of melodies with little rhythm, My dog (& one of my cats) LOVE TV. Especially if the videos were made for cats and dogs. I've seen them glued to the TV as long as 35 minuets.

My little brown faced dog, seems to like it when we leave the TV on for her. When we are going someplace and we can't take her we'll tell her. She gets an expression on her face, then takes up a position on the couch to watch some TV.

My new kitten loves watching tv, especially the discovery channel. She soesn't attack the tv but looks a lot more interested when she sees bunnies or birds or squirrels. And I think her and my older cat actually do respond to colors. Our new baby cat is black and has been playfully attacking my older male cat which he doesnt like. And I noticed when I pet him with my black gloves on, he flinches a bit, thinking it could he our new kitty coming to toy with him.

Software like Lastpass and Dashlane don't actually get your passwords. They are encrypted locally and the services do not have access to them. They are absolutely better than reusing a password on multiple sites.

I remember the password keeping programs Gator and Bonzi Buddy, both of which proved to be trojan downloaders. I would never choose to use any separate app to manage passwords. It has also been proven that complex passwords ( hard to remember ) are not truly beneficial to security, since people will use insecure methods to remember them. The most common in offices, write the complex password on a stick note and store it under the keyboard or in a desk drawer. A simple, easy to remember password then becomes a better security tool since it isn't written down.

We used to leave our dog listening to "news/talk" radio to provide the comfort of a human voice which would be spattered with the music of commercials from time to time. After listening to the news for six hours a day, the dog is now chronically depressed.

After furlough for 6 months from work through the pandemic...I began leaving 8 hr KZbin nature/bird videos on for my pets when I went back to work. Being afraid the sudden routine switch would adversely effect my pets. I'm not exactly sure how much my animals enjoyed or appreciated the gesture but it did effect my 50+" TV! There were often paw prints all over the screen and now the picture freezes and burns out while I'm watching it. Although granted...it was very old. I'll still leave the new one on for them.😁

Just came across this vid. I pulled up David Teie's Music for Cats on Spotify. While one of my cats was snoozing on the bed here I set the volume on my Sonos speakers to low and hit play. Holy! At literally the first note, my boy came to attention; eyes wide and ears pivoting. He actually appeared as if he heard another cat in the room. I'm not at all convinced he liked the music, but I can 100% confirm that he heard/noticed it.
