It's not you that people are mad about... It's corporations purchasing apartment buildings from out of province that do not live here contributing to our economy and increasing rents on existing tenants. You and your family moved here purchased a home you live in and contributing to our economy. Saint John needs more people like you not corporations doing what they are doing. Don't let others make you feel bad for moving here. Does that make sense?

Welcome folks. One little tip about living in a coastal city... 1. In the winter, it's warmer along the coast, but more rain than snow. Inland is 6 to 10 degrees colder, thus more snow. 2. In the summer, Saint John and coastal areas is your air conditioning. Inland, ( 15-20 mins away from the coast) it's hotter. Typically 6 to 10 degrees hotter. So, when your hot go to the coast, and when your cold go inland. That's it. Hope you nestle in comfortably.

Hey Guys, Welcome to the East Coast (SJ). Congratulations...You've found one of the most underrated & hidden gems in Canada. Know this first...the vast majority of people here are very stoked to have you move here!! I'm sure you already know... ya just gotta ignore the vocal Minority of people who hate themselves and try to take it out on anyone else who is trying to make a better life for themselves. Also, don't ever worry about them.. they are only brave enough to say that stuff online... if they met you on the street, they would be sweet as pie (and that's not an east coast thing.. trolls live all over the world). Many young people out of university in NB tend to head out of province to look for jobs. NB could use people moving here to fill the gap... just not in huge droves ok LOL. We do like our quiet way of life, easy commutes, easy access to nature and water, reasonable traffic. Hubby and I drove through Toronto twice in 2019 and both times got stuck in traffic for 2 - 3 hours. Honestly I don't know how anyone could stand it. Seems like such a waste of life sitting in a car to just get back and forth to work. So welcome to NB and Saint John!

Hello from Vancouver. I've been looking to buy rural property in N.B. for the last 2 years. Using google maps there's miles and miles of house after house, village after village in rural N.B. that no one has lived for years and even decades. I feel sadness in my heart to see once thriving families and communities completely abandoned for the big cities. I don't have to tell you why I'm looking to move from Vancouver to N.B.

Forget about the people that are small-minded. They are everywhere, not only in N-B. This pandemic is definitely having an impact on people's outlook on travel and moving (hence some of the negative comments IMO). Personally, I would not want to be anywhere other than N-B and I am happy that you have chosen our beautiful province. Besides, I also think it's a great idea to buy a house in a rural community. If all the people left the small communities to move to the cities, those communities would gradually disappear from the map. Like you said, it's all about perspective.

This is a very important point. There are issues with job availability, so for a lot of local people it is just not in the budget to buy their own home. My partner and I are not able to in or even near Fredericton, and rent is ridiculously high here. My mom and her husband just bought a house in SJ after over 7 years of renting there. So yes, compared to Toronto it's cheap, but for locals it is really expensive.

We moved here two years ago for similar reasons as yours. My husband has heard similar “unwelcome” comments from one guy at work about how native NBers are feeling resentful. I think the pressure that some folks feel is that people who have worked for NB wages and paid high NB taxes to save for their home will be quickly muscled out of the market by people from Toronto who made millions on their condo. Also having been to bigger cities where people are angry and unfriendly, you of course worry that a bunch of wankers are going to move out here and make life crappy and hyper-political. Having said that, those are just mild concerns - I’m happy that people are coming out and discovering this place - it’s the jewel of the country in my opinion. We should all be kind to each other. It’s a free country and we’re all free to live in it wherever we choose.

This is a very important discussion I'm glad you made this video. Not regarding if the locals like people moving to Saint John but we have to discuss why this is happening. I am one of these people coming from London Ontario. Young adults are priced out of home ownership in the most population dense areas of our country. This is a why they are moving east. Look at what Halifax has turned into. 40% increase to freehold value from Jan 2020 to Jan 2021. As Halifax becomes more and more expensive over the next 5 years people will also be looking at alternatives, Saint John being the next most likely choice. I don't think it's unrealistic that Saint Johns prices could be similar to Halifax today in the next 10 to 15 years. Maybe 20. If the local economy doesn't offer higher paying jobs to those that can't work remotely for a company in Ontario there will be a big problem for affordable housing. I saw this happen first hand in London Ontario once all the Toronto people got their hands on London property.

A colleague that I work with lives in London Ontario... He told me that he recently tried to purchase a home there...The asking price was $800,000. Apparently, a lot of real estate sales are handled by a 'blind bid' or something like that...He stated that he bid $100,000 over the asking price, there were 27 bidders and that the winning bid was for $230,000 over the asking price!

We used Great Canadian Van Lines when we moved from the GTA to Moncton last October. We were able to pick our dates of loading and arrival with them. They even stored our belonging for 2 weeks and everything arrived at the date and time that we had requested with no damaged whatsoever. We had the same guy to load and unload (he had one different helper for each load) so it was nice to see a familiar face coming with our stuff. Total cost was around $ 4,500.00 including storage for a two story town house. Mind you, we had got rid of all coaches and dinning table before moving. Hope this help

The thing is that people out of province are comming and buying homes but locals are financially struggling to do so. My partner and I have been saving for 3 years to try to buy a home, because we want our own space so that we can start our family. Renting also is really expensive (our 1 bedroom is 1100$) and both of us make over minimum wage. So while "no one was living there" it does end up affecting the overall housing market and the ability of local people to stay near their families.
@atribecalledowens

Yeah we were looking at mini homes on edge of fredericton; could not get a mortgage for a 37K mini home due to my student loans, and cuz rent is so high neither of us can put enough money aside for a bigger downpayment, even with both of us making between 18-20$ an hour.

Both of us have stable well paying employment with benefits, so not being in freddy is not really a viable option 🤷‍♀️ can't justify getting a second car either cuz that's another expense that brings us further from a mortgage, so it has to be on a bus route.

CFA's (come from away) will decrease racism, decrease divide between French and English, increase local business and all business, create more stable jobs. There is a big issue with outside investors buying properties, and "renovicting" tenants. They can evic with no reason and hike up the rent, a place across street from me was renting for 750 a year ago, now it is going for 1400. I work in community, low income families are struggling to find affordable housing, even middle class find it hard likely until the new apartment buildings are completed.

Unfortunately NB has no rent controls, and has rules that benefit landlords more so than tenants. Some provinces only allow increasing the rent whatever the landlord wants to after the tenant leaves. Also rental assistance is not as generous as we see elsewhere for low income folk and the rules to qualify are picky so many miss out. Houses should have never been allowed to be part of a speculative market for non residents in this country.

We thinking of moving from Ontario rat race to the east coast like you guys did. What maybe the haters forget is that in the Toronto area the world comes to it and drives the economy up, and there is trickle affect like this amd we all ultimately benefit from that as a country. Don't let bitter and ignorant people bring you down or speak for most of us. Yes, some of our real estate will go up in price, but by golly, most New-Brunswickers had their chance of buying and owning real estate at cheap prices if they wanted to. For some, it's propping up the value of their homes and yes, like in anything else in a capitalist market, some people will be priced out especially if they're making bad financial decisions. By the way, the internet and social media, in general, are a cesspool for bad comments or people just ranting their frustrations. If you want to create an online business you have to either get used to it or simply not read them.

I explained what is "rich" is mostly what is known as a poor house-rich person that sold their dump of a house and went were they could buy a house and have money left over for toys or retirement. This person that was ranting a about the "foreigners" sounded like those in BC that go on about the garish wealth rubbed in their faces by speculative investors from abroad.

Unfortunately you will encounter New Brunswickers that are upset about folk coming from other provinces blaming them for the increase of properties causing many to be priced out the neighbourhoods they used to live in. Over time, you will find no lack of New Brunswickers especially in the service sector that are quick to judge, profile, power trip, and take things personally. It is also common for them not to apologise nor be accountable. This type of unprofessionalism has been the norm for a long time and they get away with it because so many folk here are doormats. There are two ways to navigate this - behave in an assertive way or sycophantic way; the latter being most productive. A lot of folk here especially clerks bask under the doormat mentality and are not use to people with legitimate questions and calling them on their misinformation. I swear at times some folk think getting customer service is a privilege; not something done out of courtesy let alone professionalism.
