This Norseman 535 is truly special! We came very close to pulling the trigger and buying this boat, but as we get older we're realizing that it's impossible to do everything all at once. Had we purchased this boat, I think we would have lost sight of the forest for the trees, so to speak. We've got bigger plans and unfortunately this yacht is not currently part of them.
We can't wait to share our plans with you guys very soon!

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.
Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.

I worked for the developers of the Norseman 53 when it was on the drawing board. Exceptionally intelligent and honest as the day is long. They focused on the engineering, systems accessibility, stout construction, and quality components. It was designed and built to a standard, not a price point. It was not considered for mass production. For example, teak decks were an option. Though checking that box would increase the margin, they were more inclined to discourage a buyer from ordering the teak decks if the owner intended to sail the tropics where white decks are far more practical.

I looked at this boat a year ago and like you fell in love with this design capable of 200+ miles days. I found some rot in the bulkhead near the starboard chainplates so figure the boat will require at least $100k in repairs and upgrades to make it seaworthy. I think < $100K would be a reasonable selling price, but this is only my opinion. Consider the boat's limits with a 73' mast, no bow thruster and a deep draft.

I’ve followed this boat on Boston Craigslist for the last couple years. Seems the market doesn’t agree with the asking price. You’re comments suggest maybe the reason this boat has been on the market so long.

I unsubscribed to this channel for this very reason. I traveled to FL and wound up putting a contract on a boat I first saw on this channel. I wound up spending $3500 on the survey, haul out, travel, etc…only to walk away from the boat because it did horrible on survey. I started researching the boats that this channel features and I found that it’s common for them to show cosmetic beauties that are structural nightmares. Perhaps this is why they NEVER buy the boats that they feature. I don’t think they should have a sailing channel…they should have a brokerage channel…just saying.

@@user-pi8ez3lr2z I don’t think that that is a fair assumption. I follow this channel and take it for what it is. It is not an in depth look through the boats. More just to get an idea. After all it is called “learning the lines” not “how to survey yachts” nor to make a solid judgement on them. Just a surface look and opinion. I am a 100 ton Master and US Sailing instructor for a very large sailing school. A good number of my students are now sailing the world. I have owned and cruised extensively 5 cruising sailboats and captained 300 passenger sized vessels. I have watched this couple grow in their knowledge over the years ( yes they started out pretty novice and admitted so up front). I have enjoyed this channel. Goodness don’t blame them that your survey went bad. I too have lost good money on surveys that went bad. An unfortunate but necessary part of the process.

Yes, I can see why you would like it so much. As you may know, I too love center cockpit cruisers and have owned 2. And yes, I love the good engine access. Sooooo important. The only negatives that I can see is the tankage. While I love the quantities and location, I would want to switch the water and fuel quantities around. I have done this with other boats. You can make water (and catch it) but not diesel. The other just comes with the Territory. Deep draft both water and air. One of my boats drew over 6.5 feet. I learned to live with it. The vertical clearance knocks out a lot of access eg intercostal. But hey, everything is a trade off one of my near this size was a Ketch. This lowered the vertical clearance a lot and gave good sail choice. I liked it. The sails were smaller too making it easier to handle.

My take is that you’ve got a million dollar boat with a lot of stuff that can break down and be a time suck running down parts and doing maintenance. But the live aboard quality is outstanding. But all those conveniences-Just a lot of stuff to look after.

8000+ hrs on the engine means unless it's been rebuilt fairly recently, at some point sooner rather than later it will need one. For what you get and the layout as long as the owner is willing to work with whoever decides to try and buy her she's got real potential. My only worry would be the 6.5ft draft because I want to be able to go island hopping when I finally get out there. That deep of a draft can be problematic and limit your choice of anchorages for that but not a deal breaker...

They are FANTASTIC blue water boats and I had friends leave Oyster Point Marina in ‘95 and I didn’t see them again until 2001. The boat was flawless! A boat like this would require a crew of two at the minimum to man it, after substantial re-fit. Then, how many actually have over $250k in spare cash reserves? I suspect very very few do. A $250k can buy a new 35"-37" production boat such as Hanse, where nothing needs fixing or re-fitting. Go smaller, go cheaper, go now.

i guess that makes sense for someone with a family with small kids but that would probably be the worst possible boat choice for myself. over 40 foot so the boat slips would be double to 5 times the price because it doesn't fit into a standard sized slip. the older the boat the more expensive and often the repairs. on boats everything has a lifespan and has to be replaced, the replacement parts on this are bigger and more heavy duty which also makes the cost of replacing them very high. so the overall cost of maintaining this vessel is stupid high. my goals to stay under 40 foot, 5 to 15 years old (because refits are needed about every 20 years and most price depreciation happens in the first 5 years). a monohull because hobby horsing/hull slapping are pretty bad on multi-hulls under 40 foot, I'd get more interior space, they are cheaper per living space, and not being able to tilt over translates into a shortened lifespan of the structure of the hulls, which is why you hear all that squeeking, damaged bulkheads, and structural issues. most of the boats you show aren't good fits for the majority of people buying which are older couples wanting to retire and sail away.

The only downside in my opinion (other than the 80’s Miami vice upholstery, ) is soo much prop and shaft exposed. That being said .... she fine!

The saloon looks real small for a 53 footer, compare it to Zingaro, which I think is in the high 40s, foot wise and it's saloon appears huge compared to this boat

Considering that most people live almost all of the time in the cockpit it would be a no deal for me. The cockpit is way way to small, especially for a family of four! The seats in the cockpit are just to narrow and the weird shape means you can't lie down on them very well. Plus, the wheel has a weird pedestal at the bottom which you would constantly trip over. I would not buy it for a family, maybe a older couple.
