As a kid I was told to fish under bridges during rain for the same reason.

Nice one, Jack, I tend to agree with you on this one so let's tackle the old "Wind in the East, fish bite least. Wind in the West, fish bite best?"

My theory was that worms come out with rain, and bunch of bait falls down from trees when it's raining

I always thought it would act as a cue to begin feeding due to food being washed into the rivers by the rain too

I would say mild with a stiff breeze is good for gravel pits. For rivers a bit of rain to bring a bit of colour and extra flow is good. However snow melt is the kiss of death. Saying that, it is surprising how often i have blanked in what i thought were 'ideal' conditions...so what do i know.

Yes on the rivers, definitely, the past 18 months have been very wet as we know and I've had my best river season yet, however this prolonged dry spell so far has defo slowed down the action so there's evidence to suggest fishing is better when the rivers are up a bit and it's been rainy.

I do know that changes in the weather are more likely to put fish off the feed than on it, possibly due to a change in air pressure. I was once fishing a lake in Wales, the fish were rising all over the place, I was doing well until there was a low rumble of distant thunder. It was like a switch had been flicked off, not a rise to be seen, the fishing was at an end.

Different fish in different venues do different things.

I say yes. Fish get attacked from above, especially when they're small. But they didn't forget! Rain protects them somewhat from aerial attack. Also, a strong rain can put food in the water, worms and insects and such. Rainy days are a good time to catch fish that otherwise might be nocturnal.

Winter rains tend to warm the rivers up and make the fish more active and feed....

Thats my theory-if its raining it is milder in the winter.

during rainfall flying and non flying insects and bugs are knocked into the water.

When I was in my early teens fishing upstream worm on a small Welsh stream the start of rain woud bring the fish on the feed for 20/30 mins and then they would stop

As you say, it's a mixed bag and entirely down to environmental factors. There is no one-size-fits-all answer
@jointgib22 күн бұрын
Interesting. I'd always wondered how the pressure thing was supposed to work as there is no way a fish under all the weight of that water can actually feel the air pressure difference.

If the rain is colder than the river or lake water its bad a degree up in winter is better than a degree down in summer 100%. Snow melt kiss of death.
