What's up guys, Jeff from Sorta Healthy here! Today's video is all about a personal trainers physique and how much that matters when it comes to income.
Does a jacked, muscular, or fit physique allow you to make more money? It's actually not that simple of a question to answer. That said, like we always do, we'll be tackling this question in extreme detail in this video!
What are your thoughts though? How much of an effect does a trainers physique have on their ability to make a living? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Thanks for the continued support guys! We love ya!!!
We mention our recent physical transformation in this video and if you want to see that, it can be found here: • We Trained Like Bodybu...

Thank you for addressing this point. I am a PT and I have had medical concerns and take medication that has slowed my weight loss progress. However, I have never had any problems with obtaining and keeping clients. ❤

I am fit and capable, but not a body builder. I work with gen pop and older adults. I also have the experience of going from obese to fit and that helps clients trust that I know what I'm doing.

Good video, Jeff. I think you hit the nail on the head. It's important to show you know how to achieve what your clients aspire to. For many clients that is just to not be significantly overweight in order to acheive better health.

I worked at a center that had 30+ trainers. Being one of the fittest there, I would have members and my clients point out the out of shape trainers to me and ask “That guy/girl is a trainer?!”. And I would always respond the same “Uh yeah… uhm their really smart though! They know their stuff!”. Bottom line if you want to be a trainer, get in really good shape.

I just recently got into personal training and am working at a commercial gym. I’m not overly jacked but I’d say more muscular than the average person (currently 225 lbs at about 10% bf at 6’3”). I think my physique has helped me attract some clients that I probably wouldn’t have gotten otherwise so I’d say it helps to look fit.

If it wasn't true, every bodybuilder wouldn't have to resort to drugs to break their genetic ceiling. It is important people don't have a false understanding of what they can achieve in the gym compared to the unrealistic body types portrayed every day in movies, ads, etc.@@Gererostrength

Basically, be as jacked as you naturally can. It's attracts the female clients that usually prefer natural builds over juiced up bodybuilders. And it inspires the common male clients that also want to look good while keeping the function of their testicles.

I think fit is fine over "jacked." Also, as mentioned, producing results through sound know-how, not only in exercise science but in motivation/psychology, will go far in building a client base.

I met a personal trainer who had an awesome physique high definition, but poor cardiovascular health because he spend more time doing resistance training and less time working on aerobic endurance. The heart is the most important muscle in the body. Looking like something on the outside does not tell the whole story.

Going from heavy lifting for 4 yrs that got me a huge bulky build, no abs and low endurance, I can now say just 1 yr of implementing jump rope, running and biking into my routine, I now look like a shredded monster with all the energy in the world. Bonus is now I know how to do boxer skip jump rope, criss cross and sidewinders. I love cardio and don't lift as much anymore.

I think, it depends on the client, what they are looking for. If they want to become jacked, they'll trust a jacked person to make them jacked as well. Clients look at trainers as a reflection of what goal they want to achieve.

I do not think a trainer or coach needs to look the part. I would hire the overweight training with the exercise science or exercise physiology degree. I think education it a big part. In cycling, I have seen some strong overweight cyclist crush it. In skiing racing the coach is not always faster than the skiers they coach and at the highest level the coach is definitely faster. Tadej Pogacar coach was not a Tour de France winner but he coached Tadej to be a two time winner of the Tour de France.

It's always at least been my opinion that a trainer should not ever be severely out of shape, someone who is on the more obese side is not someone you look at for inspiration because you need a feel of connection through them that they have been through what they are training you in. Put simply, it's the difference between studying with no experience and having all the experience with little study, you can not study the effects of exercise on your body physically and mentally because you will never truly understand it unless you put yourself through it. I hope to become a trainer and it is important to me that I transform my body leading up to that, the most crucial part being relatability to clients knowing exactly how they are going to feel and being able to properly and confidently motivate them with real advice and not just "You will feel a bit sore in your first week" I want to hear "I was off and on gym multiple times in my youth, and the body pain in the first week is something I will never forget, we want to make the first couple of weeks reasonably moderate otherwise you will be spending the next 4 days with your elbows stuck 90 degrees in immense pain unable to do anything. Your body is going to adapt and get used to this feeling."
