Found this out the first time I removed my 510c from the box. I turned it on before even realizing the battery wasn’t installed. I bet you’d get even better results running just a dot versus a circle dot when on solar power only.

Thank you very much for answering the question of a Holosun working just off solar power. In a SHTF situation, having an illuminated optic that doesn't require batteries is fantastic, and of course, supplementing battery life in normal situations is a huge plus too.

You can read more about the supercapacitor on Holosun EU site. The 512 has the smallest supercapacitor with 1mAh, which allows for up to 200 hours of red dot at medium settings. Followed by the 510 with 6mAh and the AEMS with 12mAh. Although it doesn't allow to recharge the inserted battery, it can be useful sometimes (especially when you forgot to insert a battery).

PSA: If you try this test with a recently purchased 510c, it may not work initially for "battery-less" test. The 510c has been around market for a while and some of them have been stored for long periods of time. So the internal capacitor will drain if there isn't any light and it takes a bit under the sun to recharge once taken out. Happened with mine when I decided to find out if it will run battery-less when first opening the box. For a minute there I thought it was defective. It just needed to recharge and the battery doesn't top off the internal capacitor (thats a good thing). I suggest if you keep it stored in a safe that seals off light for long periods, I'd take it out time to time just to recharge the red dot and check the battery. [edit] I just re-did the test. I believe your sight is dimming when you put your had over it, is because you might be in auto-brightness mode. My 510c in will run in manual mode in complete darkness and not dim when battery-less abeit not full brightness and in about a 20 secs after turning off the lights, starts to blink.

Late to throw this in, but is the blinking to possibly tell you that the battery is dead/not installed and to replace it? With solar being this efficient, it would be pretty hard to tell if the battery is gone, and the blinking being an indicator feels like a really good UI choice

this is interesting and telling. It's dope to see the tech exist but I would argue it's still not there. This would be more useful for someone who may live in LA or Miami where there is a lot of ambient light at night and it's sunny often. But someone from Minnesota or Wisconsin wouldn't benefit not nearly as much considering we experience winter 1/3 of the year and ends up really dark really soon and not nearly as much ambident light is associable. Would like to see where Holosun takes this tech 5-10 years down the road. Edit, I also wonder if long term usage affects it or fogging on the panel like living in Washington.

I'm not sure the circuitry is set up in such a way that it would recharge it though, if that makes sense. I think what you're suggesting may be theoretically possible if we had a battery up to the task, but I think it'd have to be a new design.
@EFontanezX20
@EFontanezX20 3 жыл бұрын
@@knottheory79220 Perhaps. But now that you mention it, It would be interesting to see a version that incorporates a built in internal battery with a good solar system. This (In theory) would mean that you would have a constant on sight, that is considering that everything runs good with no malfunctions. Or simply stick with the impressive 50,000 hours advertise battery life. Still it is something interesting to consider.
@CDOES
@CDOES 3 жыл бұрын
It is a good question. I figure that the limit of the battery life being roughly 50k hours. Is that after that length of time, the battery wont be sufficient in holding a charge anymore.
@octaviaharmony
@octaviaharmony 3 жыл бұрын
I think it's been confirmed from Holosun that the circuitry is wired so that the solar panel is only a backup and that it does not recharge the battery, I think because something like a CR2032 battery is non-rechargeable. However, I could totally see it being possible with some changes, like a solar-rechargeable watch. At that point, the sight lasts as long as the chemical properties of the battery. This video is an awesome experiment though, almost like the optic is fiber-optic fed.
