Well, I "earned" my black belt in Kyokushin Karate, but I had always crosstraining with Muay Thai- and Kickboxing-classes, where you do not have a belt ranking. My thoughts on it, after almost 30 years in "Martial Arts" and "Combat Sports": On one hand, there is some good thing in "belt ranking" when you have to learn the techniques of a style and get a belt as a feedback for your skills and knowledge. So you have knowledge of your own progress in "knowing your art". Makes a lot of sense in traditional styles like Karate or Taekwondo, with "kihon" and "kata" or "gibon yeonseup" and "poomsae". On the other hand, you do not need it in Muay Thai or Kickboxing where you do not have to know all the techniques and moves there are, but the things that work for you as a fighter. This offers many people a bit of freedom to work on the stuff they are good in and waste not too much time on things they may be never good in, after learning the basics. When I work as a Instructor/Trainer, I do not care about belts. At one point I considered becoming a "Teacher" of Kyokushin Karate, but this whole "hierachy and authority"-behavior seen on many traditional "masters" who like been called "Sensei" or "Sifu" pissed me off. So I always tell my "students", that they are not my "students". I teach them the stuff I know, but they train with me and I train with them. (and still learn some things from them too)

On the belt thing - in the karate dojo I was a member of as a kid, we had to earn our belts with a combination of time and demonstrated skill. I was very proud of my belt, and very respectful of what a coloured martial arts belt means, because I knew what it took to earn it. I assumed every martial arts school had similarly-rigorous standards for years. I have since met supposed brown belts and even a couple of black belts who wouldn't even be able to earn an orange belt in the dojo I had attended as a child. Over the years, I've lost a *LOT* of my respect for belts in martial arts. I respect *PEOPLE* now, and I respect those who move like they know how to move, regardless of why and how they know their body. I'd be more scared of most people I know who do parkour than I am of most black belts I've met. Parkour's *LACK* of formal ranking systems makes it more conducive to focusing on personal improvement and caring about form over meeting arbitrary (and often irrelevant at many schools) requirements to get some coveted symbol of your skill. You know someone is good at parkour by the way they move. And you know someone's skill at martial arts by the same, better than by the colour of the strip of fabric on their waist.

One assistant black belt at my first ever martial arts gym, ITF Taekwon-Do, really wanted it to be a cult. The gym owner, as I came to find out on a car ride to a tournament, was (and probably still is) a grounded, down-to-earth humble dude. This was back in high school, I checked back in after living away from my home city for a bit and came back to see how the old club was doing. As expected, he ended up leaving because of vision differences, let's call it.

Heard some kids talking about the instructors in the locker room (as kids, and in fact, all people do) and wanted to institute and automatic 50 push-up, 1-month suspension punishment. For speaking, not even badly, on the venerated black belts. All I can think is thank God he didn't go into law enforcement.

I was a part of what I now realize was a martial arts cult. It wasn't a McDojo, since our coach then was actually a legit martial arts instructor, but his fighting experience was only through street violence that he faced during his youth and some amateur fights. However, he wasn't as good as he presented himself. Even though he did have experience in dealing with real violence. All the students were always in awe of him and his charisma. I must also add that none of the other students in the class, except one, were nearly as good as he was, because everyone there was either frail or fat but usually unfit and unathletic, including myself. Eventually, I learned almost nothing from him in the 3 months that I attended the class, because he rarely even showed up, and put the responsibility on his best student to teach us, who never taught us any combat, but only did some strength and conditioning workouts. Now he has stopped teaching martial arts and has become a spiritual guru, but has the same students following him and doing everything he tells them to and regurgitating every single idea of his, even if he contradicts himself later at some point. It was only after I started training at a proper mma school experienced in training athletes who have won amateur and professional fights, that I realized this. Edit: I should also add that none of the students of this cult were dumb, in fact, a couple of them are actually my friends who I know to be very intelligent people, but they need to really do a reality check and understand the psychology behind charismatic people making cults. If you're smart and charismatic enough, you can get other smart people to buy into your bullshit if you veil is strongly enough.

So a bit off the subject of martial, but on the subject of this video... Would it be accurate to say that by your interpretation of religion that most people have many different religions??? Wouldn't most places of worship qualify as cults in the way they tend to venerate and demand devotion above all else to particular places, people, things, practices, and so on or else (paraphrasing) "it doesn't count"??? And how does philosophy or interpretation of a subject correlate with belief and/or doing (eg. if someone believes in their interpretation of Christ's words and actions, but does not agree with what other people consider to be "Christian" and act according to their personal interpretation rather than the collective interpretation then are they still Christian)??? In short... Would the "bad" of cults best be described as trying to limit people to identify themselves by a small part of themselves rather than allowing them to identify as a whole person complete by the sum of their experiences rather than by any one singular experience???

I certainly did for years I joined a tomiki aikido school when I was 9. They were very much like a cult but rather than a leader the cultishly followed a way of techniques. That did not work unless you were doing it there way . At about 15 I got involved with instructors that saw the nonsense in aiki dance , or the bullshit grappling of tomiki competition. They practiced aikido as Jujitsu and tomiki randori( grappling/ sparring ) as judo/ Jujitsu. They shunned the pre meditated and prearranged . Encouraged us to train in all that we could and test it against what we were being taught . This type of Tomiki aikido I only ever saw in our dojo .. Strike training, ground work . Etc . My training in that system has saved my life in my career as a uk prison officer countless times. My class was not accepted by our association. What I teach now is far removed from what most Japanese Jujitsu/ aikido instructors would accept. But I know it works .. I feel blessed to not be stuck in the cult of aikido/ Jujitsu dance . It's not what we say it's what we do or how it works for real . That's important. A bad philosophy normally precedes a bad technique. A bad technique always leads to bad philosophy. That is true of martial arts or faith . Whether a cult or not.

"Cult" is from the Latin "Cultus", which is as Dewey discovered in Spanish, simply a particular way of doing religious worship and practices. In Catholicism, for example, you can several "cults", including different liturgical practices or devotions. Apply the same standard to say Pentecostalism, and there a wide variety of Pentecostal practices, or "cults". But in the English speaking cultures, cult now connotates "abusive, manipulating, extreme-personality worship" systems, which can include atheist groups, such as Randite Objectivists. However, as a Bead Squeezing Mackerel snapping May-REE worshipping Papist, I or my Faith in general have often been brushed with the pejorative meaning of "cult" SOLELY because we don't follow what some Fundamentalists and Evangelicals say is "true/Biblical Christianity", meaning (to start) we reject Sola Scriptura (Bible alone rule of faith) and Sola Fide (Faith alone as the means for Salvation/Justification). Simply put, the label "cult" is FAR too frequently used in general discourse.

On the other hand I have seen it skew people's understanding of their own ability, both inflating their ego and downplaying it. I've never heard either members or anyone else referring to ceremonies as cults, when it comes to islamism, judaism, etc. I think the word cult started being used with respect to these religions because, under our last dictatorship, they were sort of illegal, and had to be practiced with great care and privacy in order to avoid trouble.

I find bodybuilding community much more cultish in some ways. Martial arts people are usually very open minded. Probably because martial arts contain a lot of different cultures and psychological outlooks on what martial arts is/are.

What is your opinion on part of your promotion consisting of those in the rank you are being promoted to trying to smash you just to sorta reality check you? Not like seriously dangerous smashing... just complete outclassing and not playing nice because this isn't your standard friendly sparring/rolling.

In Portuguese, we generally use the word "seita" to refer to religious groups that are frowned upon by society, such as "seita satânica" for example. Yeah, "Culto" is how the evangelical (Evangélicos) call their church meetings every sunday morning.

Some people think that Bujinkan is a sect because of the high degree of traditionalism, blind belief in their "ninja techniques" and the adoration of the figure of Hatsumi, but I think they are just a bunch of martial weeaboos.

Hey there ramsey dewey, I need advice from mma veteran like yourself. I brought 4 mma books for a very good (super-cheap) price (considering the resale prices) through my hard-earned money. The first question is "Are mma books effective?" The books I got in particular are wrestling for fighting by Randy couture, MMA:the book of knowledge by bj penn, mastering the rubber guard by Eddie bravo and I think mastering the twisted Too. I have a question I'm dying to ask was wrestling for fighting useful for you as i know from a other video, you also have a copy of it because where I live in Australia, there is no single wrestling program. I bet your gonna ask if I do any sort of martial arts, well I go to all 5 lessons of kickboxing a week and all 2 sessions of bjj a week. Our gym primary for strikers as we have pretty good roster of fighters who compete very often, for bjj I have pretty good instructor who is very experienced. In bjj tournaments the guys do very well e.g. Oscar who won a comp recently considering the fact all the other dudes who competed go to fully fledged bjj schools who Train way more than us a week in specifically bjj. That why I brought the bjj books (I also brought bjj university by saul ribeiro from a other purchase) to train more in this art so I don't miss out on the opportunities that my opponents have (haven't competed yet). I'm looking drill these techniques with close friend who goes to high school with me (if he willing put the time in it) and put these techniques to use rolling with the experienced dudes. To recommended any strategies a approach to drilling these techniques? I'm also looking to get winning on the ground by Ronda rouseys mom (interested in judo) and jack Dempsey championship fighting. How do you find championship fighting by jack Dempsey considering how old it is. It seems I have rambled on for too long. Now I just wait and hope you reply to this megalodon of a Paragraph.

French has the same thing: the meaning of 'cult' and 'sect' are flipped. Cult is just the group, sect has the negative connotation.

Che Ramsey! Good Argentinian accent!!!! About the video there are A LOT of "Cults" here in Argentina, either in chinese traditional martial arts as modern Wushu too...lots of Shifus who thinks they are gods and have to be worshiped as such by their students...I think that happens when you don't have a solid martial art background and knowledge and most important thing is that these people never been put to the test and sparr, fight, and show there true skills, I think there is a correlation ( at least in chinese martial arts community) between non sparring, non fighting, no full contact martial ats and these charlatans, because if they put themselves to the test all the lies they been spreading falls down inmediately. Saludos!!!!
