Discussing where Glock is in today's firearms world. Are there better options, or is Glock still "King of the Mountain." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the "Hickok45 Talks" Channel. This channel is a place for me to just pontificate about random topics that somebody out there might find interesting. I will talk about firearms issues quite a lot, but I'll also exercise my license to talk about any topic I might pretend to know something about.
If you have a topic you'd like me to address, let me know. Doesn't mean I'll address it, but who knows, I might.
Thanks for your support, and I hope you'll subscribe to all three of our channels and keep up with all the brilliance here!!! :-)
/ @hickok45 Our main channel.
/ @hickok45clips Our channel where John pulls clips from our existing library of videos.
/ @hickok45talks This channel where all material is new material where I talk about one specific topic in each relatively short video. Hope you enjoy.

Some like me, can't shoot Glocks accurately. But PPQ, HKs, Caniks, SIGs, HiPower, 1911s are far easier and better to shoot. Glock brick like grip and angle doest work for everyone. There are better choices out there.

There are many legitimate reasons why glock will continue to be successful but ultimately, most of it has to do with the fact that they have never really competed in the market. “It’s there if you want it, and if not then move on to other product” and I think that’s what ultimately makes Glock successful in the marketplace. People either love that about them, or resent it, but either way is Relevant and beneficial, because Glock is always talked about. And that’s just the marketing part… that doesn’t include real world experience regarding the reliability aspect.

Which doesn't stand out anymore when you can get an equally reliable gun for the same price with better ergos and a far better trigger, from basically any other company at this point. Not to mention Micro 9 pistols that are the peak of innovation right now that Glock still hasn't caught up to. Glocks are not dead from a sales POV, they are just becoming irrelevant from an innovative POV.

First semi-auto centerfire pistol I bought was a G17 (Gen 1) in 1988. It has since been joined by a G26, G21 and G34. All four have been super reliable and accurate. I used to loathe Glocks without even knowing why. It all started when I was 10, playing Counter-Strike, where they made Glocks as effective as a water gun. Fast forward 25 years, and I found myself diving into the history of Gaston Glock and his legendary creations. Intrigued by the design, trigger build and simplicity, I decided to give it a shot (pun intended) and bought my first Glock 17 Gen 3. To say my aim was terrible would be an understatement. Meanwhile, my other handguns performed like champs. I couldn't help but blame everything but myself for my abysmal shooting. Then, I discovered the secret: Glocks demand a specific grip, like a picky eater with an exclusive diet. Once I embraced this unique hold, the transformation was magical. Now, my Glock 17 is my favorite, and my Glock 19 Gen 3 has become my trusty everyday carry. From hating to loving, it's been a wild ride with these iconic firearms!

In the early 2000’s I bought my first handgun. The guy at the counter convinced me to try a Springfield XD in 40. It jammed here and there and was alright otherwise. My friend brought his Glock 19 to the range one day-it felt better in my hand. It felt like it was better quality. I shot it better instantly. I was instantly hooked, and was also amused at the fact that I could break it down with a punch and add any part that wore out all by myself… Even back then they were a myriad of sites where you could go and get any replacement part you needed for your Glock. It was so simple and yet learning to shoot on it and master the trigger was such a complex joy. It wasn’t a gun, it wasn’t a handgun… It was a GLOCK. For me there really only has ever been Glocks, a few 1911s, and revolvers. Yes there might be another semi auto pistol that I like to shoot… But to own?… Why would I?

After some 50 years of buying and shooting other handguns I felt something was lacking, so a couple years ago I got my first Glock, the 19. It is a gem and lives up to its positive reputation. When people stop comparing everything to Glocks then maybe but it’s still the most prominent handgun mfg. Extremely simple, extremely reliable, does not need all these gadgets and modules to make it work. My build is simple, Glock, red dot and a light. Sigs don't have that familiarity with me. Shields are cool but again, just grew up with Glock. The Hellcat...I can't take the hellcat seriously simply because of the name. The name is ripped off from the dodge charger. Not to mention the technology of the dodge charger was ripped off from The Terminator SVT Cobra Mustang which no one seems to remember. I’ve only been into shooting seriously for three years. My kids got together and got me a Glock 19. It is the quintessential first handgun. It’s basic. Easy to shoot. Easy to maintain. Extensive aftermarket support. Yes, the stock trigger is like a DA revolver trigger. But learn to manage a DA revolver, everything else is easy. Are there better handguns? Yes the “perfect” Glock is probably the CZ P10. It’s essentially a Glock with a lighter, smoother trigger. But at the end of the day. A Glock is a lot like a Swiss Army knife. I have had almost all of my training on various Glocks. For those I now train I choose Glocks. Though I own many different brands of handguns, picking up a Glock, as you stated, just feels like coming home. I don't foresee that changing for myself or many, many others.

I've had one too many Glocks in my lifetime. I once had a G43 that had a serious trigger reset issue right out of the box. After the second range session, I handed it over to one of the guys at the gun shop for an inspection. He completely disassembled it, then cleaned it and put it back together. After that, it functioned flawlessly. I never did know what caused the problem.

I like the new channel, so I just subscribed. Glocks will (probably) continue to be my first choice. Platform familiarity, aftermarket parts availability, reliability are all important to me. After shooting them for almost 40 years, it's safe to say that I am a Glock supporter 100%.

They are not dead but they sure have ALOT of competition now, compared to 10-15 years ago. They are not MY favorite gun to carry for self defense(except 43x/48), but the certainly work for many others.

Glock is the new 1911. When John Browing came up with the 1911, it was received with skepticism from the revolver cult. Just like the Glock was received with skepticism from the 1911 cult. After the 1911 proved itself, every other gun manufacturer tried to asimilate. Just like after the Glock proved itself,, every other gun manufacturer tried to come up with their own striker fired polymer gun.

Yes, love Glock. I have had many handguns since 1993 including Sigs, Ruger, Taurus S&W semi-autos but Glock are the best for me. Regarding revolvers, S&W revolvers are my favorite by far (I have owned Colt, Ruger and Taurus revolvers over the years). Having had many various handguns and sold many back to the dealer, I finally have settled on Glock & S&W for Semi-auto & revolvers.

I have a 1911 govt in my truck everyday, but I keep a Glock 19 or 17 in my waistband. Glock is just an easy carry low maintenance pistol that go’s bang every time I pull the trigger.

Our Security Teams were standardizing on Glocks, so I found a Glock 22 that was on consignment. It had never been fired by the previous owner, who passed away a couple of weeks after purchasing it. The price was great, and because I could use a drop-in 9mm barrel with proper magazines for the 9mm, it worked perfectly. If I want to go back to a .40 S&W all I need to do is swap out the barrel and use the proper magazines. That is quite versatile for a single platform.

Glocks are still VERY relevant and great... they are the "tools" of the gun world. Nothing fancy nothing beautiful, they just go bang and have a very business-like and utilitarian work mood to them. They are the Toyotas of the gun world. Also it does make me feel old thinking that young people just now getting into firearms who were born post 2000 might see Glock as "the old guard." Glocks have become the "old dog" for Gen-Xers and are how 1911s were to the Greatest Generation.

I remember something Yeager would say on his videos about this topic when people would try to persuade why another pistol would be better in some niche, "You're trying really hard to *not* buy a Glock right now." And it always made me chuckle.

During my competitive years, the Glocks I purchased and competed with performed as good or better than my most expensive custom guns. The difference was my custom stuff was 3,000 to 5,000 and Glock was under $400 and I rarely did anything to them. Competed with the Glocks right out of the box. The difference in cost paved the way for lots of practice. If someone doesn't like them, there are other choices which might fit them better.

I am 53. I have been carrying and shooting 1911-DA/SA for a long time. I bought my 1st Glock 19 in May of 2024. I should've bought one many years ago, and I was one of those hard-headed people who hated Glock. I never shot a Glock until 2023- that is how stubborn I was. Now, I carry and go to training classes. Sorry, Glock, it took me this long to understand why your platform is reliable and a staple for so many!🎉🎉🎉

Glocks are great- they don’t deviate from accuracy, simplicity, and certainly the designs we all know. The truth in my opinion is that gun ownership is subjective, from hand size, to recoil stability to larger or subcompact. I just purchased my first pistol after waiting 14 months to get my NYC CCW permit . I went into the gun shop to buy a glock 26. And despite wanting this gun for years, I walked out with a more expensive shadow systems cr920 war poet.( this gun is a glock 43 clone) This gun felt so much better to me than the 26 and the 365. Again, I firmly believe that not every gun is made equally for every man. If you know, then you know. Purely subjective.

I've owned dozens of pistols over the last 40+ years, but had never owned a Glock, for no particular reason. But last year I decided that I wanted a high-capacity .45ACP, and chose my first Glock. A G21 Gen5. Only shot it at the range once, but it ran thru several different manufacturer's cartridges, a couple hundred rounds, and was accurate as I can be with any pistol. I'm very happy with my purchase, glad to finally own my first Glock.

Couldn't agree more brother, they're still here and shoot as good as they did back "in the day." Actually better.. Long live the G19, I trust that one with my life. G19.5MOS with a can, light, and optic is my home defense pistol. There are lots of great "plastic fantastic" pistols these days, but Glock is still in the game. God bless you and yours, thanks for all the great content over the years!

I've wanted to get a Glock because I enjoy customizing things and I've heard that although they aren't necessarily great out of the box, you can customize them to make them shoot very well. I do the same thing with desktop computers, paintball guns (back in the day at least, modern paintball guns don't have the same level of customization), etc. If there are other handguns out there that are just as customizable but feel better out of the box to shoot, I'm definitely open to learn!

To each his own. My all time favorite is the 1911A1. Yep, .45 ACP. My house gun is a Ruger American full size .45, my every day carry is the Ruger LCP .380. However, I own a Glock 23 as well. I like the fact you can have one pistol that can fire 3 different types of ammunition, simply by changing the barrel! That’s truly innovation at its finest! I tinker with guns, simple things like sight replacements, part changes and trigger jobs and I have worked on one particular brand more than any other. No, I’m not going to say which one, but it’s the one that the take down levers has a tendency to snap off and the back strap safety is truly a hit or miss proposition! Love your content! Happy Fourth of July!

In the late 1980s Glock was revolutionary. Now, 35 years later, striker fired polymer framed pistols are made by everyone. Walther, Smith and Wesson, Springfield, Sig, Taurus, Tisas, etc all do the "glock" thing and they do it better than Glock. Better ergonomics. better triggers. just as reliable. Glock sat on their laurels and never bothered innovating with their ergonomics. My own Glock, the one I carried for decades as a cop, is in retired status. I dont carry it, and barely shoot it nowadays. Its a reserve gun I suppose. I keep it clean and oiled.
