Discussing where Glock is in today's firearms world. Are there better options, or is Glock still "King of the Mountain." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the "Hickok45 Talks" Channel. This channel is a place for me to just pontificate about random topics that somebody out there might find interesting. I will talk about firearms issues quite a lot, but I'll also exercise my license to talk about any topic I might pretend to know something about.
If you have a topic you'd like me to address, let me know. Doesn't mean I'll address it, but who knows, I might.
Thanks for your support, and I hope you'll subscribe to all three of our channels and keep up with all the brilliance here!!! :-)
/ @hickok45 - Our main channel.
/ @hickok45clips - Our channel where John pulls clips from our existing library of videos.
/ @hickok45talks - This channel where all material is new material where I talk about one specific topic in each relatively short video. Hope you enjoy.

There are many legitimate reasons why glock will continue to be successful but ultimately, most of it has to do with the fact that they have never really competed in the market. “It’s there if you want it, and if not then move on to other product” and I think that’s what ultimately makes Glock successful in the marketplace. People either love that about them, or resent it, but either way is Relevant and beneficial, because Glock is always talked about. And that’s just the marketing part… that doesn’t include real world experience regarding the reliability aspect.

Which doesn't stand out anymore when you can get an equally reliable gun for the same price with better ergos and a far better trigger, from basically any other company at this point. Not to mention Micro 9 pistols that are the peak of innovation right now that Glock still hasn't caught up to. Glocks are not dead from a sales POV, they are just becoming irrelevant from an innovative POV.

First semi-auto centerfire pistol I bought was a G17 (Gen 1) in 1988. It has since been joined by a G26, G21 and G34. All four have been super reliable and accurate. They have been used for bowling pin shoots, PPC, IDPA, stake shoots, home defense, training classes and concealed carry. I just don't feel a need to replace my handguns with another brand.

In the early 2000’s I bought my first handgun. The guy at the counter convinced me to try a Springfield XD in 40. It jammed here and there and was alright otherwise. My friend brought his Glock 19 to the range one day-it felt better in my hand. It felt like it was better quality. I shot it better instantly. I was instantly hooked, and was also amused at the fact that I could break it down with a punch and add any part that wore out all by myself… Even back then they were a myriad of sites where you could go and get any replacement part you needed for your Glock. It was so simple and yet learning to shoot on it and master the trigger was such a complex joy. It wasn’t a gun, it wasn’t a handgun… It was a GLOCK. For me there really only has ever been Glocks, a few 1911s, and revolvers. Yes there might be another semi auto pistol that I like to shoot… But to own?… Why would I?

Gen X here. The PPQ took me away from all full sized glocks. But I still carry the glock. It use to be the 26 and now the 43x. What Glock did with the 43x is just a beautiful thing. Sigs don't have that familiarity with me. Shields are cool but again, just grew up with Glock. The Hellcat...I can't take the hellcat seriously simply because of the name. The name is ripped off from the dodge charger. Not to mention the technology of the dodge charger was ripped off from The Terminator SVT Cobra Mustang which no one seems to remember. We old people just remember the companies and brand names that revolutionized the tech and designs that changed the world and stubbornly stick with what we know.

Glocks are still VERY relevant and great... they are the "tools" of the gun world. Nothing fancy nothing beautiful, they just go bang and have a very business-like and utilitarian work mood to them. They are the Toyotas of the gun world. Also it does make me feel old thinking that young people just now getting into firearms who were born post 2000 might see Glock as "the old guard." Glocks have become the "old dog" for Gen-Xers and are how 1911s were to the Greatest Generation.

Glocks are great- they don’t deviate from accuracy, simplicity, and certainly the designs we all know. The truth in my opinion is that gun ownership is subjective, from hand size, to recoil stability to larger or subcompact. I just purchased my first pistol after waiting 14 months to get my NYC CCW permit . I went into the gun shop to buy a glock 26. And despite wanting this gun for years, I walked out with a more expensive shadow systems cr920 war poet.( this gun is a glock 43 clone) This gun felt so much better to me than the 26 and the 365. Again, I firmly believe that not every gun is made equally for every man. If you know, then you know. Purely subjective.

I personally own a variety of handguns but Glocks are absolutely my favorites. The most recent one I purchased is a well worn G21, Gen 2 LEO trade in with round count probably in the tens of thousands. You can look at it and see that it was used and carried a lot. It still functions 100%, and is extremely accurate.

I’ve only been into shooting seriously for three years. My kids got together and got me a Glock 19. It is the quintessential first handgun. It’s basic. Easy to shoot. Easy to maintain. Extensive aftermarket support. Yes, the stock trigger is like a DA revolver trigger. But learn to manage a DA revolver, everything else is easy. Are there better handguns? Yes the “perfect” Glock is probably the CZ P10. It’s essentially a Glock with a lighter, smoother trigger. But at the end of the day. A Glock is a lot like a Swiss Army knife. Not necessarily the absolute best tool for the job…but it will indeed do the job.

The difference was my custom stuff was 3,000 to 5,000 and Glock was under $400 and I rarely did anything to them. Competed with the Glocks right out of the box. The difference in cost paved the way for lots of practice. If someone doesn't like them, there are other choices which might fit them better.

I've only really ever had four issues with Glocks over the years: 1. The absolutely ATROCIOUS plastic sights they continue to insist to install on 99% of models, meaning you've got to factor in the cost of some proper sights when you buy one 2. The terrible trigger. I am still hard pressed to think of any other striker fire gun in the Glock's price range that manages to have such a gross trigger. 3. the (lack of) ergonomics. I've long heard people refer to the HK USP as a "2x4" in the hand, but even they manage to feel well sculpted compared to a glock, especially with that terrible grip angle. 4. the continual insistence on polymer overmolded magazines. All it actually accomplishes is making the grip fatter than is actually required compared to the competition. Ultimately, all of these issues can easily be solved by Glock, but they simply choose not to, and that's why I can't stand them.

I give credit to Glock for being reliable and simple. But it's hard to support a company that ignores it's consumer base. Crap trigger aside, how many decades have gone by where the consumer asked for one simple and easy thing to change...give better sights out of the factory. Crickets from Glock. When you can buy a CZ P10C or P10S sub $400 and have excellent sights and an amazing factory trigger right out of the box, that's what I'll go with. It's not a fly by night company, CZ makes some of the best and most reliable firearms in the world, so for that pricepoint...give me a CZ all day over a glock

I like the new channel, so I just subscribed. Glocks will (probably) continue to be my first choice. Platform familiarity, aftermarket parts availability, reliability are all important to me. After shooting them for almost 40 years, it's safe to say that I am a Glock supporter 100%.

I guess I’m lucky my 20,21,29,30,36 all feel great in the hand. My wife’s 42 is tiny & my 43 was bought only due to its size. Not a big 9 mm fan. Sorry. I can make it work but the larger models fit my hand like a glove. Before Glock my Combat Commander .45 ACP was my go to, S&W 36 backup. Ruger LCR .357 now.

At one time, my employer issued full sized S&W semi-auto pistols and off-duty I carried smaller single-stack version of the same gun. I had my choice of maybe three holsters for each. If you didn't like the feel of the trigger, you might someone to smooth or polish the stock parts and that was it. Eventually they switched to Glock. Wow! Glock makes several versions of the trigger and you can mix and match parts to have a ridiculously heavy trigger or a very light trigger. There are a hundred people making holsters and also aftermarket trigger parts and assemblies, not to mention barrels, slides, magazines, etc. Now I loved the S&Ws. They fit my hand well, I shot them well, and I liked the grip angle. When I was forced to a Glock, I hated it, especially the grip angle. BUT, after a few years and being forced to fire a couple thousand rounds through it, I've come around. If not a Glock fan boy, at least I'm a Glock defender.

Thanks for sharing your experience and stories on things. I’ve always wanted to sit down and have a conversation with you, however, I have a question I’d like to hear you talk about. People have different perspectives on what makes a man successful. I’ve been through some seasons in life, relationships, kids, and all of the responsibilities that comes with all of that. In your life what do you feel has been the most important thing for longevity in all of those aspects? What do you think makes a man successful?

Glock is like that cool guy in high school back in the 80s that Walther and S&W and Springfield and all the others wanted to be like. But now Walther, S&W, Springfield, etc. have all grown up and improved themselves and are more mature and refined and have moved away and started careers and families and are doing good. But Glock is still hanging out in the old neighborhood wearing his Def Leopard concert t-shirt and acid-washed jeans and Reebok high tops. Which was cool back in the day but everyone else has moved on in the world and doing much better. And it's really kind of sad. I'm a Walther guy now after being a Glock guy since the early 90s. I hope my old friend Glock can get his act together soon.

I still marvel at my Glock 26 gen 3 and have the xgrip for both the 17 & 19 mags for higher capacity. But I enjoy carrying with the flush, 10 round mag.

Mr. Hickok, I am a 74 yo woman who took up the shooting sports decades ago. Upon recommendations when I initially began shooting I of course fell for the hype about Glocks so I purchased one. BIG MISTAKE. About 7 weeks post purchase and the Glock was gone. Terrible grip angle, my front sight fell off, the trigger was the absolute worst trigger I have ever felt and the magazine kept falling out. Now I am a total convert to Sig Sauer. I actually own 40 of them. Last year Glock fell to 11th place in sales, 1st in guns found at homicide scenes, 1st in shooting yourself or somebody else. The list goes on but I suspect from watching other KZbin gun guys that what I wrote will really upset the Glock lovers but at my age I don't care. OH, Sig out sold Glock in pistol sales by over 250,000 units. I imagine that my opinion will upset some of these guys that love Glock's but what I wrote is straight out of the horses mouth. Enjoy your day, sir.

You have a right to voice your opinion; but since I do not know you personally, show me the data! Been carrying for the past ~35 years! Colt Government .45 ACP, then S&W various semi-autos, then Glock 23, now EDC is Glock 43 with extra factory mags. I like the 43X except I carry OWB crossdraw. “Prints!” Trigger is great on both my Glocks (except for the kinda uncomfortable center trigger safety). Owned a Sig P229 and it would choke on Remington Golden Sabre .40 165 gr HPs. Dumped that one, for other reasons besides the FTF issue. My Glocks work and their customer service reps are tops, not so much at Sig or S&W.

@@410Governor First and foremost from my personal experience you are delusional. Glock has never and will never make a quality handgun or any gun. Glock triggers are some of the worst triggers I have ever fired. The overall quality of Glock is less than terrible and I do not give one wit what your opinion of Sig anything is as Sig is THE BEST OUT OF THE BOX PRODUCTION GUNS MADE...,PERIOD. The P-229 choked? Only on your wifes cooking. Just yesterday I, and 2 friends took 5 guns to the range...3 Sigs, all P-229's, .40, .357 Sig, and .10mm...not one glitch... one of the guys brought his junk, Glock. The Glock failed about every 3-5 rounds...JUNK. As far as Sig CS there is none better. So you have all of TOW GLOCKS? Well YaaHoo for you. I have over 80 pistols and not one is a plastic Glock. Glock is the NUMBER 1 murder pistol in the US...look it up on your own time. Now as my dear departed 30 year US Marine would say, "if the SEAL's carry Glock all the more reason to NOT carry a Glock". Has my female attitude been too direct for you? GLOCKS SUCK!! And so do the people that carry them. Kinda' like voting for Captain Comatose. Enjoy your 4th.

Glocks are fine, Glocks are relevant, but Glocks--or any striker fired pistol for that matter--are not beginner pistols. They require trigger discipline that most new shooters simply do not have.
