"Living Traditions Homestead" channel shares a lot of info about their experience with "Idaho Pasture Pigs". IPP's have upturned snouts so they root considerably LESS then standard pigs. If you are considering breeding pigs on your farm, IPP's are ideal because they grow to harvest size almost as quickly as standard pigs, but the breeder adults do not grow as dangerously huge as standard pigs. The other cool thing about IPP's is that they have significantly more docile personality traits then standard pigs, making them a lot safer to work with.

American Guinea Hogs are another good homestead pig. They grow slower than IPP, but they share many of the favorable attributes. They also do exceptionably well in woodlots. We have AGHs on our 20A woodlot, and they do major work for us in our quest to convert unmanaged woods to silvopasture.

You could grow a massive amount of mulberries with little effort in the duck pen area and around your entire fence line. Check your local food banks to feed the pigs. I have a friend out here in California and he has a deal with all the local food banks, where he picks up the fresh veggies and bread that can't be given to people because it's spoiled. He also has the same kind of arrangements with some of our local farmers and stores.

Being a first time pig owner is something you can stumble into. I'll be curious to see if you are a SECOND time pig owner. Having pigs is no joke. They are very smart and they will try your patience like nothing else. They will escape. They will break into your neighbors fence to fraternize with their pigs. They will destroy your garden in a matter of MINUTES if they get in there. All things I learned first hand. The most important lesson for me was - for the handful of times a year I consume pork, the grocery store version is OK.

If you're thinking about keeping pigs you may want to think about growing some forage crops to support them. I've heard some local farmers talk about beets and turnips. The Mangelwurzel specifically because they get really large both the greens and the root can be fed to animals. Greens could go to the chickens, ducks and geese with the bulbs going to cattle and pigs. Really enjoyed the video thank you for your content.

Good luck Morgan. My venture with pigs was with my brother in law back in the 70's. He leased a farm with a 2 acre rock quarry that was cliffed on three sides so we only had to fence one side. We started with twenty females and one bore. All were around 20 lbs. Two months later, in the summer, we lost them all over night due to a lighting strike. Vet said most of them died of fright. The others from the strike. Had a lot of bacon though. LOL

Hi there, just wanted to add that there in VT/New England you have lots of orchards. A friend of mine has made various arrangements with his local orchards, somewhat like your brewer buddy to remove any unwanted apples, pears etc to feed to his pigs, they love the apples. He also gets free produce from his local market stores that has spoiled. I think you are onto a good thing if you can utilize a variety of waste food for free or near free. Cheers

A couple of suggestions on getting pigs. When you first get them in the spring I’d put them in Alison’s garden area they will till the soil as well as fertilize it. Here in Maine I had a friend who raised pig and he would get spoiled or waste production milk and baked goods from the commercial dairy’s and bakery’s ( Oakhurst, Hood, Nissan, Country Kitchen) . I hope this may help in someway. Maybe check with your local grocery store to see what they do with breads they make themselves when it expires.

Morgan, I highly recommend researching the Korean Natural Farming Method for pigs. In short, a Korean Natural Farming Piggery is a microbially inoculated deep litter system that utilizes layers of biochar, logs, wood chips, and sawdust which allows farmers to raise pigs with relatively no odor, no flies, and no poop scooping. It’s clean method of raising pigs with the added bonus of fresh manure/ fertilizer for your tree business/ garden.

As I mentioned I now live up in scotland, but a few years back I was living down in Cornwall, both are big farming areas, where farmers are, for the most part, like you wedded to good environmental management. Having a few pigs was always considered as a vital part of that, for all the reasons you outlined, and most of all because of the old saying that a good farmer and his wife, could find a use for just about every part of a pig bar its grunt! So yes - good move I think. Looking forward to seeing you take this next step.

Nice farm and animals, but I was wondering how long you were planning on keeping Jimmy Hendrix. Because the way he moves his head while getting scratched can be a bit dangerous when he grows bigger. I'm sure you already heard that tame cattle are more dangerous than cattle that are a bit scared of you, so I'm pretty sure you're prepared for the risks involved. But I was just wondering cause it is lovely to see someone else like me who loves to show affection to an animal and still enjoys eating meat, but sometimes though decisions have to be made while working with animals.

Continued watching... yep I agree he suggested 2-3 pigs. Yep we had pigs. 2-3 is truly perfect number to start with or stay with. You don't really need more than 1 pig for your own personal meat per year. But you wouldn't have happy pig if it was alone. So you need to sell products later on.

Ending up with some nicely tilted deep bedding that can be used as rich compost.

You are probably aware of how Joel Salatin feeds and beds his cows in the barn over winter - then puts his pigs into the barn in spring when the cows come out to let the pigs root through the fermented bedding and eat much of it. I really like that system. It makes so much sense to get multiple uses out of the inputs and the livestock.

The best porkmi ever ate was raised by an elderly woman in 1970 time frame. When young they were fed with some grain and last years dry field corn , out of date etc from bakery*. And whey from large milk product factory * ( * her retired husband took metals to reclaim metal yard and then stopped at factories on way home ) for the last almost 2 months she fed garden scraps ,acorns from large oak trees that skirted her property and whey...no longer feeding out of date baked goods. The meat was so much darker and more flavorful than anything I ever saw in a grocery.

Good evening from the Netherlands. To answer your question about pigs Morgan I have a little testimonial form friends from my mother who run their own farm. They are a goat farm, have some other birds as well and are of similar size to your own farm. They also decided to add growing beets to the mix. They own 2 pigs which are basically their green recycling bin. They equally always bring the pigs to the butcher nearing autumn, or when food production is close to a halt. They then buy two piglets again in the coming year. From what I remember them saying: they balance their pig numbers based on their food production, and supplement the pigs with damaged crops. So when they harvest their beets, all damaged beets go to the pigs for example. If they have to slaughter a goat and the meat cannot be sold, it goes to the pigs. In your own farm this means that all leftovers that go to the birds now, then go to the pigs. You can even contact food suppliers (supermarkets) and ask them if they wish to steadily donate food that is expired for example. There is this cool concept in Las Vegas where a pig-farm is used to eat all leftover food from tourists, the pigs grow and their meat is turned back into food managing a proper recycling cycle in which as little food is wasted and as much possible is reused. For your farm, the real question is: when are you ready to feed your pigs plenty enough without hurting your budget by paying for their food. If you can't supplement 50% of their food with waste, you should be a bit more patient and grow your farm a little while longer. Buy them as a recycling method, not to make the farm more ecologically more interesting.

Half a lifetime ago, I worked at a livestock auction. When pigs stayed overnight, we fed them pelleted brewer's grain from the local Budweiser plant, pelleted at a local feed mill. It is great stuff, and it tastes like sourdough (yes, I would eat it).

As a gardener, I see free organic fertilizer with the pond water! It sure would be cool to see someone come up with a way to use it for Allison's garden and the orchard. Or even spraying it on your grazing pastures.

Oh mate we had a dead grass, can't get nuffin to grow dirt patch before the ducks invaded it and fooled around, turned out to be the lushest patch of green you could ever see, we used their mucky water on it afterwards and the produce size and quality was phenomenal.

We raised three our first time and we absolutely loved it. We raised two more who are actually going to the butcher today, AND we are getting a milk cow today. This fall the cow will calve again and at that time we will get 2-3 more feeder piglets. We love pork in our family, but we REALLY love pastured, marbled, fatty pork. 🤤

If you have a local small butcher with a dehairing machine, you have a great resource for your pork harvest. When my wife and I planned our wedding, we went to the auction, bought a 150 pound pig, and had him done by the guy with the scalding and dehairing setup, and roasted the legs for the reception dinner. We also had an oven fire, but that is beside the point...

You might check out Idaho pasture pigs and kuni kuni pigs. Idaho pasture pigs will grow on grass, slowly, but they'll grow, and if you add anything to that you'll just have faster gains. Kuni kuni are a smaller variety of island pig (The top out at about 200) that do really well on a vegetation and spent grain diet. especially if you can add in something like pea protein or whey protein to cover the lysozyme deficiency in most diets either of these would probably do really well for you.
