About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Have you ever used sawdust pellets? They were great for cat litter, my friend uses them as horse stall bedding mixed with straw (she doesn't even bother to expand them, just lets the ambient humidity get them). They might work well as a moisture absorber around your trough. They also compost very nicely.

When I used to herd my chickens into the coop at night, I had a couple of fiberglass poles with flags (think bicycle or electric wheelchair flags) that not only gave me better ‘reach’ while herding, but the flags fluttered and the poles made a slight swishing noise that helped to move them along…

Would love to see you and Ariel do milking training together! She's part way there by liking the brushing you do for her and following the treat bucket. I would totally recommend that you build a dedicated stanchion to keep her lovely head and horns contained. My experience says introduce just one new thing at a time for about a weeks worth of repetitions, and I bet you'll have a nice little dual purpose cow (and some great fresh milk) at the end.

I've found that having a large fishing net with a long handle can be very helpful for safely capturing a stray chicken who won't go into the coop etc. They don't particularly like it, of course, but it's a safe way to get them to stay still so you can handle them for medical checks and/or moving them about.

I’m not sure if you noticed when you were chasing that red chook with the net but a black chicken also got out 😂 was all rebellious energy. I’m very impressed with Abby’s improvement and l thought for the ducks and geese would putting a portable pond in the tunnel coop be good idea as I’m sure the water would during winter be solar heated and during summer they have a way to cool off and have accessible fresh water if you put in a water filter? Definitely would be of course a next season project or when you have time to do it. Also with the dirty access water is there a way to pump it and use it to water the garden and your fruit and nut trees? Definitely would be great way to conserve and save water

Morgan, since I know you are a, "student of Greg Judy", why not use a hay bale un-roller and spread hay over parts of the pasture to incorporate the waste/fertilizer into the pasture, until snow or extreme cold temperatures require you coral them in the barn area for winter? It would help fertilize the pasture, keep them out a little longer, and might be better for the winter coral.
