I've been to Dancing Rabbit, last summer, in fact. Definitely not a cult and absolutely a place where you can expand your preconceived notions about the planet and what you can do to help it, how you can live with others instead of by yourself and experience incalculable joy in the process.

unfortunately, when I tried - the first suggestion was "Abuse" (cult was 4th)- which is also a load of crap. Unfortunately, resident's family members and the community at large are probably searching these terms. For example, I have an aunt that definitely thought I was in a cult when I lived at DR. I have been no-contact for her for many, many years, so I couldn't do much to combat that and also had zero f's to give about what she thought.. I'm not sure how you would structure a campaign to have so many people search other terms like "Dancing Rabbit Sustainability" that you deprioritize the unfortunate suggestions... but it's worth a try. And HI DAN! Hi to everyone!
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 7 ай бұрын
Yep, and it's different for everyone who does a search based on their previous search history. Mine no longer puts cult first, but if I do an incognito window, cult is first. I don't know how to change this besides some crafty SEO. How are you Brent? Are you still in Nicaragua? I was chatting with a guy a couple months ago about a retreat center in San Juan del Sur area called Costa Dulce where he's trying to set up an ecovillage. I might go down there to visit sometime since I haven't been to Nicaragua since the mid-90s.

@@HardcoreSustainable hey -just noticed you can report these predictions. In google desktop, click in the search bar and in the lower right hand corner of the resulting megamenu, you get a link to report inappropriate search suggestions. I just reported.. we'll see if it has an effect. I reported as hateful toward groups and explained that this search suggestion fuels the false narrative that DR is a cult.

This all looks amazing. Just one big question. What if you do already have your own car or want your own car?
@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 5 ай бұрын
It is possible to own a car and live here, but you just can't use it for trips under 100 miles one way and you have to store it at least 10 miles away once you become a member. As well, if you are a resident, who is someone still in the "checking it out" status of living here, you still have to follow the rules that say you can't drive a personal vehicle unless it's a trip over 100 miles, however you can store your vehicle in the village parking lot while a resident. The purpose of these rules is to deter people from using personal vehicles while living at DR. If your car isn't close, you are less likely to be tempted to use it. We also have the vehicle co-op to provide for any vehicle needs. It's not like you don't have any options without a personal vehicle. Not owning a vehicle actually saves you a lot of money because in the vehicle co-op you are only charged for the time you are using the vehicle, whereas when you own a car, you are paying for it whether you use it or not.

@@HardcoreSustainable thank you for responding. That logic makes total sense, but my anxiety wouldn't let me not have easy access to my own personal car. I still want to come check you guys out. I just totally love the idea. Maybe I can get something similar going in my area.

@@HardcoreSustainable So what if you suddenly in the night wanted to go somewhere or there was a medical/family emergency? I am assume since its still party of the village that it must be working for a majority of the people there. I was explaining to my fiance about ecovillages and Dancing Rabbit as an example. She couldn't imagine not being able to get up and go. ( if under 100 miles like you said). I am very interested in this way of living as we moved out of the city into the country to get away from people but now I at least feel very isolated.

@@ethereal_arcana We have a hospital 13 miles away and the vehicles in our vehicle co-op serve for most trips like this. We also do have a backup emergency vehicle in case all the vehicles in the co-op are in use. @@HardcoreSustainable wow that is really close. I live out in the country in Upstate NY and its 30-40 mins away to the nearest hospital. I was expecting to hear that everything would be far away. I have learned that at least in my living situation that being 20-30 minutes outside of a city is difficult. For me its mostly medical reasons. Thanks to the info I found about Ecovillages/Intentional Communities it gives me hope that myself and my fiance may find a community we can do the things we wanted to when we moved here.

Yes, I guess it limits your ability to just jump in a car for a road trip, but most of what people need to do they can do easily with the vehicle co-op. There's not a lot near us, but if you need to sign one out to go to the nearest town, it's pretty easy.

It might sound like that but I bet if you tried it, it would be so freeing! Somehow I cannot convince my husband to let go of our multi vehicle household mind set. Now I am to blame, I cannot let my big van go, I’m very attached to her, and she is still proving very useful at times while we renovate our house. But we have a mini van (I also love it) and a more powerful 4x4 car for towing. I feel like we need to consolidate but can’t decide what to do. If we could share vehicles we wouldn’t need to own one for every occasion, we could just borrow what we need when we need it. That’s just given me an idea….

@HardcoreSustainable
@HardcoreSustainable 10 ай бұрын
A commune is income sharing. No one owns anything themselves in a commune. They own everything together. We own the land collectively, but are on our own for income and we can own any improvements on land we rent. So I own my house. That wouldn't be possible in a commune. We are just like any other town or city in terms of how we provide our own income.

Acts 24:14, the apostles and disciples also were accused of being a part of a cult. As you say you are a group of people gathered with a particular intent. That is the very definition of an Ecclesia, which is the Greek word mistranslated as Church in the New Testament of the Bible
@winesap2
@winesap2 10 ай бұрын
Most religions did start as cults, with followers following someone they considered a Messiah. Back at the beginning of Christianity, apocalyptic messiahs with followings were a dime a dozen. A group of people gathered with an intent isn't a cult by the modern definition. By that definition a book reading group or a concert would be a cult. Cults have these characteristics covered in the video, but mostly the charismatic leader with a lot of control over followers is what makes a cult.

@@HardcoreSustainable I do not believe that your eco community is a cult. I really like many of your ideas as well. You are pretty fun to fire up. Basically everyone is displaying Dunning-Kruger bias. We will never be able to outdo the negatives, even with mass numbers. You guys drive 4 cars, but there are people blasting rockets off all the time, full blown military drills burning unfathomable amounts of fuel and a school system that burns petrol like there's no tomorrow. How will we overcome? I get it, there is no balance. Eventually, it boils down to a small percentage of disgruntled concerned people talking about how the rest of the population needs to not be in existence. If this depopulation discussion has not been of your participation, then it checks out. But, if you think that yourself, along with others should control peoples rights to progeny by means of force or through passive w@rfare, then it would definitely count as a cult. There is way too much land, and so much improvement that could be terraformed into it. Earth could hold billions more
