I had the same experience.....Being in love with cars and Formula 1 when being a child, a Ferrari represented the holy grail. Now as an adult, I recognize that a Porsche delivers everything that a Ferrari represents. The difference between Ferrari and Porsche is...Ferrari owners are proud to tell you how little miles they have on their car and Porsche Driver will happily tell you about their six digit plus mileage......

I agree, I tried a 991.2 and it was too perfect. It felt like my man could have driven it quickly without any trouble. I actually prefer my old 996 because I feel like I am the one making it go quickly. Give me a manual gearbox and hydraulic power steering any day over a car with an auto, electric power steering, rear wheel steering and more computing power than you average space shuttle. I can live with the out of date interior just to have the pure driving feel.

The 997.2 is the greatest generation of Porsches, you still have the driving experience of a 996 (manual gearbox, not too many driving aids) while having a really modern interior like the 991

At 10:01 there is reference to changing gears in the 997 using a floor mounted lever. This can be done in the 991with PDK in Manual mode, when the lever operates the gears sequentially. At 13:42 mention is made of turning the sports exhaust off in the 997, but there is no PSE button shown in the video. The 991 does not appear to have the PSE.button either , but in the sound comparison at 4:15, it does sound quite loud. : ) Another advantage of the PDK, is to have the Sports Chrono Option, which will have the Launch Control.

Great video. As an owner of a 997.1 C2S (6MT) and having a brother and dad who both own the 991.1 C2S (PDK), this video was of interest to me. Just a small correction, the 991 is MUCH faster around the Ring, time is something like 7:38 (PDK) vs 7:56 for 997.1 (6MT) and 7:50 for 997.2 (PDK, IIRC). So as pure lap times, the 991.1 is a quicker car. I also agree with you that it is more refined and it larger, so transporting people is easier. That being said, I also agree with you that as a purely fun car to drive around town, up a canyon, etc....the 997 is a bit more fun. Here is how I look at it. 997: canyon, around town, tight roads, pure driving experience/driver feedback. 991: best track times, transport people, impress neighbors (more refined), more modern infotainment system, longer drives/trips, traffic (for those that have long commutes on freeways that have a lot of stop/go traffic). Both cars are incredible, the 991 is more modern, the 997 has a more retro feel.

Great comparison, but the elephant in the room which was not discussed was about engine reliability. The 3.6 & 3.8 997.1 cars can suffer with score bores issue requiring an expensive engine rebuild to resolve (circa 8-10k). The issue was resolved in the 997.2 cars and onwards but that's reflected in their costs which are significantly higher than the 997.1 cars. That's a consideration IMO.

I drive a manual 997S, I like the way that it is still quite rudimentary. I love the way it drives and sounds (raw) and the way that it attracts people driving lesser cars like Audi’s, BMWs etc to come and make fools of themselves in front of me. A Porsche 911 is a thoroughbred sports car, not a souped up family car, I know that so let these idiots in their focus RS’s and such like have their fun. If it ever came to a race around the ring or any other circuit they wouldn’t stand a chance against a 997, it’s chassis is so good, they would get spanked!

Firstly, just to say that I think the white 991 looked the best of all your 991s. Just something really classy about it. I get that the 997.1 C4S manual is best for you, and that you seem to prefer the Cayman 981 S PDK over the 991s you had as your more dailyable sports car option. As an older person, I'd choose a 991 or 992 as my more everyday sports car, and a 997.1 C2/C4 manual for a B road blast. I know there are engine issues with the 997s, but the pre-DFI engines have a special character, just as the air-cooled engines before them. And it's not that the DFI engines totally solve all the problems. I am always somewhat surprised that the majority of 997s sold with the Tiptronic transmisson. I understand that maybe most were sold to people who used them for commuting in big cities, particularly London, but I think I would have tended towards a Mercedes SL if I wanted an auto. However, I do think the PDK is a game changer, although I've heard of some people requiring new transmissions due to electronics failures, so they're not as perfect as most people seem to think. At the end of the day, there are so many personal factors that it simply comes down to what suits your situation best and what you can afford. We are blessed with so much choice.

The 997 is the perfect amalgam of everything that is Porsche. Mine ( Carrera S Cabrio) is now 10 years old and I still look forward to driving it at every opportunity. The 991 and 992 remind me too much of the 928, as a driving experience. Bigger 911s are not better Porsches. The visceral feel of the car cannot be translated into mere words, and the experience cannot be duplicated by Ferrari or anyone else.

Great insight on both cars and I appreciate your honesty when reflecting on the strengths of each. It really is different strokes for different folks. I love racing my Porsches on the track, but I have many Porsche friends who have owned Porsches for years and never been on the track once. They definitely prefer different options or even pdk vs 6spd based on how they will use their Porsche. I also totally agree with you about your Ferrari comments. I have been a Porsche enthusiast and owner for almost 20 years. Own several of them and can appreciate all Porsches for their joy to drive. In fact Porsches are so satisfying to drive that they really do check all the boxes and other cars are just not that appealing. Yes, it would be nice to have unlimited money and have a few exotic cars in the garage, but the Porsche would still make you smile and be an incredible joy to drive no matter how many Ferraris you had. I also totally agree where I want to be in control of what my car is doing 100 percent of the time. 6speed manual for me because I enjoy using all four limbs while immersed in the driving experience. I don't need a radio either ;^) I have my Cayenne S with all the gadgets to get around town in and relax in while I drive. Great choice at the end. One of the reasons I am having a really difficult time letting go of my 997 C4S too ;^)

Nice real-world review. We are always told that 987 boxsters/caymans are the same as 997's from the doors forward, so its no surprise that the 997 feels like a small car inside. One car can't really do anything, I keep considering chopping in a manual 987 and an auto V8 super saloon for a 991. But they are just so different, nothing can do it all - even with an auto gearbox with paddles, I rarely use the manual change - and yet as soon as I get stuck in a long traffic jam with a manual box, I get the rage. Being super-comfortable on long runs and very focused on a B-road blast are also difficult to combine. As is interior space and a car small enough to enjoy on UK small roads. So its two cars for me....

Love the video, but hate the music. But as far as the cars are concerned. In my opinion the 991 is getting away from what a 911 is supposed to be. It has gotten to big and refined, but still has a really small back seat. I don't see the reason for the car to exist. You can get the same feel with a Panamera and get a useable back seat. The 997 is smaller, lighter and a better handling car. It is what a 911 is supposed to be.

I'm afraid I can't get onboard with this. A huge part of the 911 experience is the sound and the 991 with sport exhaust is far superior to pretty much any 911 generation. The 997 isn't quite there but it's not far off either. The other improvements inside make the 991 more livable. There are also some major mechanical flaws in the 997 generation like bore scoring and IMS. 991 seems more reliable and less costly to maintain, which is a big deal. Someone's impression of what a 911 "should be" is totally subjective because it is constantly evolving.

@@Tbraaaa The 997.1 was the beginning of the end. The 996.2 was the last 911 that followed the 911 philosophy of being a true sports car always looking to the future. The 997.1 for the first time put comfort and luxury above performance and feel for the first time in 911 history it was aerodynamically worse than it's predecessor the 996.2 meaning S models had to take on a larger heavier 3.8 engine as the base 3.6 cars were slower than the older 996.2's as they produced the same power with more weight and more drag. The 997.1 may have still had hydraulic steering but it was build with variable gearing to kill feel in a straight line for comfort rather than a proper analogue rack like all cars before it. Again the 997.2 had the 996.1 transmission, no update the other than the gear selector. The exhaust sound was reduced for regulations and if your compare a 996 PSE to a 997 PSE you realise the 997.1 is a pale imitation. The 997.1 was essentially a 996 with a body kit and a few comfort options, heavier, less aerodynamic, adding PASM for comfort, variable geared steering rack. the 997.2 was just a comfortable touring car.

Another thing rarely talked about. For people only interested in cabriolets, the 997 and prior versions do not look good as cabs, not even close to the 991 generation cabs which fixed the sort of weird roof slants of the 997. If I were buying a 997, I would ONLY be limited to coupes due to the weird looks of it, but with 991, I could go either way and be happy. And I am one of those who sees the 991 as an attractive generation, where as the 992 is not so attractive and the 997 has a classic look but definitely less modern.
@benterry26815 жыл бұрын
I feel the 991 marked a transition, the 911 stopped being a sports car but rather a GT car, the 997 has a sort of wired place though as the 996 was essentially old school Porsche a full drivers car with the focus on driving with a water cooled engine the 997 was essentially a 996 with a body kit to make it look more like a classic 911, it started with a 3.6 that made the same power as the 996 but was slower as where the 996 was an evolution of the 993 the 997 was less aerodynamic and had to beef up the engine to 350hp to keep up with the 996 but was still slower than 996’s with power kits and just ended up being looks and a few comfort options,

You are a really good you tuber you should video other peoples cars. Classics ect. I really respect and would take your advice when buying my first porsche. You should also do a video on what to watch out for when buying your first Porsche.

The 997's sound is preferable to me. But I do like the GT3 front bumper on the 991. Your car your choice. But 997 for me too.

I know this video is a couple years old now, but which of the two generations do you think will hold value after depreciation the best, or maybe even gain value in the far future? Nowadays the prices of these two generations can be similar if you either buy a really nice, low mile example of a 997 or you buy a slightly higher mile 991.

Would it have made a big difference to your opinion if you had owned the 991 in manual?

Any problems with rattles in the 991? My car has more rattles than I can count.

You’re not making a fair comparison. Get a manual 991 and redo your evaluation!

@@AnthonySmith-pl1ox from germany. Finished my apprenticeship in 2018, started working and tried to study. The university was not as I have expected it to be so i quit after the first semester. Since then I have worked in a production plant and i am very happy. The salary is above average and i think in 1 or 2 years i can buy a nice 996 C4S :) Have fun driving your new „toy“ around ;)

PDK does everything a manual box does better... ideally you want one of each, but if I could only have 1, I’ll have PDK...

Great, great video. You gave me a good idea of the difference between these two cars and I would choose the 997 too, however, isn't the 991 the faster car?

Not a fan of black wheels on a car for the most part, but I am a HUGE fan of Speed Yellow. Love your 997. Would pick it in manual over a 991. Manual > PDK. Any concerns about IMS?
@glennhavinoviski81287 жыл бұрын
IMS not an issue with 997.2 at all since they went to the Direct Injection engines. 997.1 after 2005 had M97 engines that had larger IMS seals and far more reliability, but entire shaft was sealed inside the block and not replaceable without taking apart the engine. Because problems were so rare for the 2006-2008 997.1 models (and not an issue for Turbo or GT3 at all because they used a different engine), I'd say IMS is less of an issue. The early 997.1's (before 2006) may be a different story.

Both amazing cars 🙌🏼 for me being older I prefer manual but younger people might like pdk, I wish the 991 was manual and also that I won the lotto to get one lol

Great review one of the best seen. Honest and a great break down of the reasons for each. Well done to the wife for the great practical questions. Love the passion for having a car to “drive” in, not just to have in respect to your comparison with a Ferrari. Good points. Well done thoroughly enjoyed.
