If no one buys the first year, there won't be a second. Early adopters help drive innovation and help companies develop even better products, essentially becoming part of the design process. I have no issue buying a first year motorcycle or other product if it appeals to me. Sure, there will be some growing pains, but that's all part of the experience. Good video Colin, sounds like you're enjoying that bike!

So I bought my Pan-Am Special in July, I think I got 7,800 (about) miles on it already, For the first few months it had that starter whine, and some other small electrical issues, but they all seem to have cleared up when it was serviced for 5K miles and got the firmware upgrade, and the onboard clock works. I have had no ride ending mechanical issues. New bike, yes bugs getting worked out, but mechanically sound. I love this bike, I'm so happy that I got it when I did. I love it when stopped in traffic the guy next to me is looking at the bike and asks " IS THAT A HARLEY" everyone has said nice bike. I'll keep my bike.

I have a 2021 and am very happy with it. I just rode mine from Southern California to Deadhorse, Alaska (9000 miles). I also did an "Iron Butt" ride (1012 Miles in 18 hours)\. It goes in this week for the 15,000 mile service. I wasn't aware of the clock problem, but noticed mine changed a few times during my trip. I laughed when you mentioned it. The issues are so minor, that they aren't really performance issues. Anyway, keep riding, it is a great bike.

My only regret with the Pan Am is that I didn't know the accessories would take so long to get. If I had known, I would've waited until 2022 to get one. I looked like Jed Clampet with my top case and two dry bags tied down on the back riding to AZ and back. As for the first year model, if it's a lemon, I'll just trade it in for a new Pan Am. That being said, I wear a big smile every time I ride it. Great bike.

I bought it and I LOVE it. Part of the reason I bought it was due to my comfort level with the H-D dealer network and to a higher degree, my comfort level with my local dealership. I’ve had a couple issues, but my dealership took care of them REALLY quickly. I’m 5K in with some longer trips including one to Sturgis. The PAM provides a great riding experience and it has exceeded my expectations.

I bought the first-year Harley-Davidson SportsterS, with the same platform as the Pan America. Yes, I too was an early adopter with the tech and the Revolution Max 1252cc 60 V twin. I had many of the same issues (clock, time, 1250 whine, starting, etc). This is NORMAL for a couple of reasons: 1) to bring the product to market in a reasonable time, often the product is puched out the door expecting the bugs will be worked out in the warranty period rather than using production time and dollars (all companies do this), and 2) getting feedback from the purchasing community is necessary often in order to address issues that missed the the R & D or quality control folks. If you don't want to be a part of the R&D feedback process, then don't be an early adopter ! All of the issues on my SportsterS have been corrected; took some time. The same issues have been corrected on the Pan Amnerica as well. I traded my SportsterS (2021) in on a new Pan America (2023). All of the issues from the 21 and 22 have been corrected; seriously, all issues have been corrected. My Pan America is a dream machine. It has NO issues whatever; they listened to their early adopters and they fixed the problems. So yeah, I struggled for a time working the bugs out of my 2021 SportsterS; but its gold now. The guy that just bought it is happy as a clam... its running well, has no issues, and he didn't have to go through the early adopter process. So, it really boils down to understanding what you're doing. If you buy a first year bike, expect to go through the early adopter process... this is normal. If you can't handle that emotionally or for some other reason, don't be an early adopter. marcus

I purchased the first year Nightster and yes it had its issues-no start problem and defective handlebar. The online forums helped a lot to diagnose the problems as only one tech knew anything about this bike. I also had to placed numerous calls to Harley Davidson customer service to get help. Now that the bugs are fixed, I love the bike. I purchased a first year bike knowing of potential problems, but the great deal that I got is saving me $175 a month and I got a new bike.

Just watching now as I am having a few electronic issues with my 1 year old PA. But, when I ride it (have owned at least one of most brands - 2 Triumphs, all of big 4, BMW, KTM, 3 Buells -which were awesome bikes-, or had friends who have, so lots of experience) I get the smile and reminder that it's worth a few problems. And, I think mine stem from dealer. Was perfect until 1st software update at 1700 miles, added attempts just caused more problems and they said nothing we can do. Talked to other guys who said dealer was helpful and got tech assistance from HD to fix. It's far from right now, unrideable, always warning lights on, sometimes throttle sticks at 2800 or 4000 rpm, lots of codes, and for fun, it's all intermittent. But another dealer said bring it in, we'll try to sort out.

Hope you get it sorted. I’ve had some codes. I just clear them and all good. I agree on the dealers. You have to find one that knows what they are doing. Seems it is hit and miss with this.

I bought my 2017 Ultra Limited as a first year M8 model and have no regrets at all, In fact I'm glad I did since I've had absolutely zero issues. The one recall for fluid transfer was taken care of and I've had one Boom Box flash but never had any problem with either of them. I got the custom two tone blue color with pinstripe accents on the fairing, bag lids and trunk lid. I haven't seen a color since that would entice me to trade it. It's had a stage one upgrade with Cary Faas Racing mufflers that I love, adjustable Kuryakyn highway pegs with heel rests and and the remote rider backrest with the slip on organizer. I actually believe this one will be with me to the end. (I road my last new bike for twelve years.) I have extensively test rode the Pan Am Special and I'm quite intrigued with it. I did sit this first model year out because it's so different in every way and like you, I follow all the social media pages and read about everyone's experiences. I've seen the Fastback Blue color for it leaked out a few months ago and hope that comes out as an option for the Special. Maybe it's a good thing I waited this time so I can add another two tone blue Harley to my stable this year and have a matching pair.
@Broncoride

Indeed, I only had a handful of small recalls on the SGS and that bike will be with me for a while. That blue for 2022 isn’t bad, just wish it was a little darker blue. Maybe we will be surprised when they release them soon and have the small fixes addressed.

All new bikes have their quirks and issues. As solid as my T7 is, Yamaha made a few design flaws on it (like the pipe hanger) - The cool thing is that once the bike is into like its 3rd year on the market, a ton of companies will start to make fixes and kits for the known issues (like there are 3 companies that now make a high mount pipe kit for the T7). I guarantee in another 6 months there will be insulation kits out for the water hose on the Pan Am.

If I want it enough, I'll buy first year. My 2019 RAM 1500 was the first year for the eTorque, new body, all the goodies... and it's been rock solid. My first-year 2015 F-150 was put together by an intern. Same with my 2009 Lincoln MKS. My 2nd year Maxima [2010] was the same way. 2000 Focus? Great car. 2004 Mustang [5 years into the model run] was faulty too. 2011 F-150 with EcoBoost was great, until the warranty ran out, and then all the electronics started going bad. I'll take my chances and use the warranty. It runs out, and so does my patience LOL.

Yes I would buy a 1st year bike. I got a Pan America Special.and am approaching 2000 miles since September. Put the A1 Risers, Madstad windshield and Tall Boy seat on it. No problems as of yet and am awaiting the repairs on the safety recall you mention. I agree with all your observations on this bike. I have three other HDs and enjoy them all. But this bike is remarkable and I never fail to grin repeatedly as I ride it. Heck just pushing it around the garage is fun; weighs nearly 400 pounds less than my Road Glide. Things to improve is the seat: still not comfortable on rides over 250 to 300 miles. Need something with less slope towards the tank and a little wider under the butt. And highway pegs: eyeing Adventure Pegs there.

I bought the first one in Tennessee. I’ve had a couple of minor issues. Nothing major unless you consider the dragging starter issue major(supposed to be fixed now). I do not like the engine noise. Both the VVT and the resonance are annoying as hell. I’m hoping a tune and an exhaust change will remedy that issue. I hate the stock seat and am uncomfortable after an hour or so in the saddle. Love the power, handling, braking, performance and the tech. I’ll keep it a few more months and see if I can make it the way I want it. It may be a keeper. Not sure yet.

Hi Colin Mine is going in the in January to be checked under warranty as I have noticed putting on the rear brake disc and the spokes on the wheels especially the back one have a mottled finish now despite being washed with HD recommended items and having only covered 1400 miles here in the UK. Is this a deal breaker no it’s just sub con parts that have not been checked by the suppliers. HD will iron this out and yes my click is wrong also if the app isn’t on 😂 but I don’t care 🤷🏻‍♂️ PS my Sportster 1200C had spoked wheels rode all year round for 2.5 years still looked like new!

Passenger grip snapped off. Up to 13 codes at a time. Took 4 hrs to check back tire, extra lip on the wheel to be tubeless is a pain to get over.

I totally agree as this is the best bike I’ve ever had and I went from several Adventure bikes as the Yamaha Tenerè or the Honda Africa Twin. I then went to a Triumph Bonneville T120 that I still have. The Pan America covers the features of all these bikes in one model. I also have people telling me I was crazy to get a first year model and even more cos it was a whole new project from a company that always did a different kind of bike. But I could not be more satisfied about the choice I made. And yes I also had issues as you describe and also I now need to change the fuel pump that is making a weird noise. But…I’d go back and rebuy it, no doubts.

I have to be honest, I do have a rule that I will not buy the first year bike, car or whatever. However, I broke my rule. I ended up purchasing the Pan America Special in October. When I went in to pick up the bike they had rolled the bike out for its test ride. The tech had taken it around the parking lot when I had gone inside to sign the papers. After signing all of the papers, I came out to ride the bike home and they took me into the shop and showed me the bike on the lift. Beneath the bike was a puddle of oil and the skid plate was removed. When I asked what's going on, they had said that they were preparing to take the bike out on the road for the road test and when they parked it in the parking lot, the tech had noticed a very large puddle of oil under the bike. They were on the phone with Harley to troubleshoot the issue. I ended up getting a ride home and later that day the dealer called and said the bike was ready. When I returned to the dealer and asked what the issue was, they had mentioned that it was a hex plug on the motor that was loose and that's where the oil was spewing from. They tightened up that hex plug and I rode the bike home and have been riding it since. I have over 1000 miles on it. I'm waiting on that handhold recall kit to come in and I was going to bring it in for my first service as well as the recall. I will say that the bike has been flawless from the first day I actually rode it home. With regard to the time, when you mentioned that, I went into my garage and checked the time and it was only two minutes off. When I had picked up the bike in October, they had flashed upgraded the firmware so I think a lot of the things that people have been complaining about were certainly taken care of in the firmware upgrades. I also checked my radiator hose and my radiator hose is inches away from the header pipe so I don't have that issue that you have. So corporate went ahead and made sure the radiator hose was not going to be rubbed but they forgot to tighten up the hex plug lol. The only thing that I dislike is having to wait for all of the accessories I had ordered for the bike. They are coming in slowly but surely however, I still have two accessory's that are yet to come in. I will say that this is becoming my favorite bike and I have a few. One of the biggest reasons is because it's 300 pounds lighter than my other bikes.
@Broncoride
@Broncoride 2 жыл бұрын
That hex plug would have worried me, but I’m glad they got it fixed. Odd, how your hose is a couple inches away. Mine seems about a 1/2 inch away. Hey somebody has to buy the first year models! I have over 11,000 miles on mine. I had a alert light the triangle light coming on mine. It happened after my 1,000 mile service. They could not figure it out. I finally went to the IMS show in Fort Worth and saw the Harley factory people at the show they ran the code and figured it out. Come to find out I had a wire to my rear shock that controlled the adaptive ride height and it had gotten against the exhaust and melted it. I really think they busted a zip tie to the wires on the 1,000 mile service. They fixed it but Harley Davidson is going to put a new shock on it. Still waiting on that part!? But other than that I absolutely love this bike! Ride Safe!

Well. I have two first-year models, the Daytona and the Yamaha (which my brother likes to tell me was called "one of the worst bikes of the 70's", though he's never told me who said that, nor do I particularly care). No real issues with the Daytona, though when you mentioned the warranty it reminded me I did actually have the cases replaced under warranty when they started to leak oil, nearly forgot about that (it was over 20 years ago now). Issues with the Yamaha were definite design flaws, which were fixed in later models (and which I incorporated into mine when rebuilding it, it was cheaper than buying a new bike). That bike has 124,000 miles on it, and made it across the country both ways with no real trouble. Your issues do seem pretty minor, except for that hose issue, that really should have been caught early!

Just before I sold my PAS I had all the updates done, and it did not fix the clock SW issue. The sidestand is way too far forward. I have no idea why they thought that was a great idea. The layout of the controls on the hand controls especially on the right side are not really laid out well, the mode (probably the most important to get to) is hard to get to. The screen layout with widgets is pitiful, very hard to read. The seat is never fully 'locked' into place and has play. Not bad mind you, but in the high position it always moves a bit (with both stock and sundowner seats). On my $5K Royal Enfield Himalayan I can overlook things, you kind of expect it at that price, but not at well over $22K. I went back to a GSA and have zero regrets. It was a great six month experiment, and the HD loyalist love the bike, but I think the key to this bike is not selling to the HD crowd, but selling to those outside that normal circle. That's where they may struggle in the coming years.

Hi Wayne, !'ve bought, after driving several HD tourings , a brand new GS1250R in the beginning of 2021 but i going to sell it because it's a piece of cold "German" machinery, there 's no "soul" in a GS. BMW have also some minor problems with but they don't (want ?) fix it. ( awfull connectivity with TFT/headset connectivity / no working handcontrols ). Also the price here in Europe is now +/- 25.000€ if you want the same options like the PA. So i think a PA will be a better buy for to the money. Probably is a GS the best bike in the world ( it's the 40th anniversary of the GS, so it's normal that the bike is getting perfect ) but a Harley Davidson is like a girlfriend. Maybe she isn't a topmodel but if she got it "all, ", you love her...😉 So i trade my GS in for a Pan America this year !
@kannermw
@kannermw 2 жыл бұрын
From my perspective there are too simply too many identified design flaws or short-comings that make me forgo thinking about buying the HD PA. Heat from engine, voltage regulator and battery vulnerability just behind front wheel where the road dirt, water, rocks, or mud flies. Similar vulnerability for radiator that should come standard with protective guard or better fender. Side stand positioning and being bolted to aluminum engine case cover with three smallish bolts. Flimsy plastic grab handles (on a $20K+ bike). The small text on the screen that is not legible for older eyes. No quick shifter. Inadequate headlight illumination and goofy look of that rectangular headlight and shroud that I find looks like mouth of a whale shark. Absurd coil pack with exposed plug wires on left side of bike. Most of all yet unproven reliabilty on very expensive bike. I'm leaning towards new Tiger 1200 or Africa Twin. I think both offer more value for the dollar with a more proven track record of reliability.

I generally avoid first year models (apart from Apple products) but I went ahead and bought a very early '21 Pan Am. Firstly because the engine/architecture is so important to Harley they have to support it and second my dealership is superb. I did take the precaution of buying the extended warranty though... Love the bike, I haven't had any serious issues, just the heat shield bracket breaking, but that's pretty trivial. QC-wise how did they not find the heat shield problem, grab rail problem, quick shift not on '21? That's pretty basic engineering/production testing. Plus there seems to have been a batch of bad batteries, cam tensioners/cam issues, oh and fuel pumps. Not so impressive, but thankfully seems to only affect a small(ish) number of bikes. The US made bikes dont seem as well put together as the Thai made ones, which is sad...

I agree that certain bikes didn’t meet QC and it’s disappointing for sure. I bought the warranty too because of the unknown engine. I haven’t had the heat shield bracket fail on me, but I’ll probably add a couple clamps to be safe.

The Sportster S is having some similar growing pains. Hopefully everything “pans” out for you though.

Hopefully it’s not a flash in the Pan and instead, I get many miles out of it.

I’d buy a first year model, provided they either replaced the bike if it was plagued with issues that they couldn’t resolve, or give me a full refund and I walk away.My choice.

Mine has had some minor issues. Had many great miles so far. Computer is a little buggy though. Firmware fixed it.

The base model doesn't have a locking gas cap. Only the U.S. version did they do this on.You have to buy one from Harley for 112.00 bucks and assemble and install the lock yourself. Unbelievable,no other manufacturer is this cheap and stupid. By the way, if you get the Harley sport cases you have to assemble and install the locks on those too. Major pain in the ass. Also the base model doesn't have the ability to install heated grips. Even my old Suzuki v-strom had a factory option to put them on yourself. The early models have a starter gear design problem that needs replacement also. I'm waiting on the parts now. So far,3,000 miles, the rest of the bike is good. Motor,handling,etc. Time will tell.

I don’t have a locking gas cap on the special. I don’t believe they are on the 22’s either. Agree with you on the sport cases. I ended up doing soft Mosko bags as my main ones and they are great.

No i would not buy a first year bike (depends how old you are ) and it is not so cool riding down the motorway as a " regular HD model":

Way too expensive, compared to better bikes.... Build quality etc. Front fender too short..... Debris flung into headers.... Radiator
