Thanks a lot! This has been really helpful. I had to change the ebuild by: (a) adding EAPI=8 at the beginning of the ebuild; (b) removing inherit eutils; (c) using "pkgdev manifest" instead of repoman (now deprecated).

to anyone watching this now, this is from the gentoo wiki: "Usage of repoman is deprecated. It is advised to use pkgdev instead."
