FOOD SAVER TIP BREAKING?.....NO MORE First I would like to compliment you on the detail that you go into. I am just starting to get into canning, so I am looking at things from a different perspective. It would seem to me that if you constantly insert your food saver tip and remove it that you will introduce a little wear each time you do so. I have what I think is a solution to this problem which will also make breaking these tips a thing of the past. Go to an aquarium supply place and get an air bleeder valve. You can get one with a male barb on each end with an exhaust port to let the air out. Or if you cannot find one like that then get one with a single barb and a exhaust port. If the latter then you will also have to get a barbed T connector. The idea is to put this bleeder between your brake bleeder pump and the food saver top. Now when finished vacuum sealing all you have to do is release the vacuum in the plastic hose with the turn of a thumb screw. No more food saver tips wearing out or breaking from repetitive inserting and removing from the food saver lid.

I bought one that is like you second one. I used it for sometime and then it stopped working. I could push the handle, but it was not doing anything. My husband took it apart and there is a rubber gasket type piece in there that got chewed up. My husban bought several at the hardware store and he said it was also not lubercated. I'm sorry if I am not describing this well. It comes down to it needed lubercation and a little rubber gasket. It works just fine now.

Thank you so much for your very informative video. A while back, maybe about 2 months, I had seen a different video from someone else about vacuum ceiling jars. She was so super excited to show us a new item she had just received in the mail. It was the manual pump for the food saver tops. I was quite impressed and decided to look on Amazon to see if I could find one. I didn't have any trouble finding the kit with the manual pump so I put it in the cart with the intention of showing my husband and seeing what he thought about it. Several weeks passed and the product went from in the cart to putting it on hold. Then a few days ago I talked to my husband about it again and asked him if it would be okay to purchase the food saver manual kit. He said okay and ordered it from Amazon. It arrived today. So I thought I would go online and see if there were other videos available to watch that would give detailed instructions and tips on how to use it. I think that's how I found you LOL. I loved your video. And I think we will purchase a brake bleeder pump kit as a backup. Of course when I get something new I have to try it out on all kinds of stuff, so I went around the kitchen vacuum ceiling various jars that were full of anything from herbs, beans, to flour. Well I got a bit of a surprise when I tried the flour LOL. That's when I looked over a few of your other videos and found the one where you give advice on vacuum sealing flour in jars. Thank you so much!!!! Needless to say I had quite the cleanup job after trying to do it without the little paper towel in the top of the jar LOL.

I have a food saver canister, that I use to seal commercial jars. I have found that sometimes the lug lids on the commercial jars need to be heated to soften the rubber to get a seal that lasts. So I just turn on my coffee pot and use the heating element on it to heat the lids. When the element is hot to the touch I just throw the lid on it, heat both sides for a few seconds(tell its hot but not to hot to handle).Then throw the lid on the jar real quick before it cools down, and seal. The seals will last. If you dont have a caffee pot a blow dryer would work, or a worm pan. You could Try that with the rubber on the tattlers it may work who knows.😊

Hello, Heidi. Many thanks for the tip for using the brake bleeder pump to vacuum seal jars with a food saver jar attachment. Vacuum sealing in jars is an important part of my preparation plans, but I found with the food saver was hit and miss on achieving a seal. It is so much better to have an actual gauge to visualize the creation of the vacuum. I ordered the bleeder you linked, and I haven't had one fail yet. MANY THANKS!

I must say I love the chamber I purchased from you. Thank you for making them. Please, thank Patrick for me also. I found a jar just a bit taller then what would fit, by just a bit. I put the top on the chamber and it sat ontop of the jar lid and I still tighten the lid to the chamber even though it was not sitting all the way down and it still sealed the jar.

Interesting about 2 minutes b4 I came on looking for this video I went on amazon looking for one of these and the final cost with import fees etc was going to be almost 60 bucks. I thought I should check our local princess auto store so I went there and they sold their kits for 20 bucks. So I just bought one and I will pick it up tomorrow. We are in Canada. But it just shows that it's good to shop around first. Then of course I come to Heidi who is the ultimate authority on these babies. ty ty Heidi... without you I never would have known about these things and would still be struggling to get my piece of crap food saver vacuum sealer ones to work that never have despite trying every trick I could find.

I just received my HFS brake bleeder (pretty sure it is the "same" as the first one you bought). If I hadn't dislocated to the Southeast I'd arrange for you to give mine a test to see if the quality seems the same. Sadly it is now a 5 day drive to get to your neck of the woods. I did do a basic test with it and was able to get a better seal over using the Food Saver battery powered vacuum pump so I think it is going to work well for me.

Heidi, I love your videos. You explain everything clearly and concise. I wanted to give you and your follower's how to keep the 'Brake Bleeder Pump' working for a long time. I was reading the amazon reviews of the various pumps and some broke the first 1 or 3 uses, some lasted a year, some longer. I wondered; is it brass vs. aluminum? or an unrelated problem. Brass is moisture tolerant; Copper gets a pretty greenish platina, Aluminum gets a nasty corrosion! Coat the inside of the pump and O ring with petroleum Gelly (vaseline) before you use it for the first time! I would like to give gardeners that have bought garden hoses and attached them to their/your multi nozzle sprayer or your very expensive watering wand (it's on a 3-4 foot tube with a head that and very gently waters your seedlings. Before you connect the hose to your watering device, coat both threads with petroleum Gelly (vaseline). This will prevent any aluminum from oxidizing and gluing the two pieces together. If that happens to you, cut the hose off at the connector, then set the hose end and watering device in a glass of white vinegar. every couple of days, try wiggling the hose end with pliers. it could take up to a month, but it will come apart!

I had one from a few years back and used it a bit but it always made an obnoxious sucking noise (joke of the family) and I didn't know any different. Then I watched one of your earlier videos on it and realized I had a defective one. Got one you recommended and now its pretty much the only thing I use. Got a back-up just in case. Actually, if you do a price ✔ on Food Saver wide & reg mouth. Add these prices together with shipping. Now consider the cost of Patrick's Chamber. Then add in the fact that it seals various types of jars beside mason from quart size down. This will make Patrick's Chamber a more valuable asset if canning jars remain hard to get. I own the Food Savor lids, but purchased Patrick's Chamber to cover my preps. Just so you know, I am just a subscriber to Heidi's channel. I appreciate her videos. I learn something every video. The comments in this community (discounting the disturbed people coming on & complaining) are very informative. God bless. Patrick's Chamber would be an excellent Christmas present.

On your old Food Saver with the broken asessory port - be sure it is not plugged in - take the bottom off (6 screws on mine) - cut the plastic hose that goes to the asessory port - find a nail or something round that will fit inside the hose - put it in the clipped hose sealed with some glue - reassembly the bottom - let the glue dry. Now your Food Saver will work with everything except the assessory port which you bypassed. Thanks for the video on the hand pump.

I daily use Patrick's brilliant vacuum chamber on a variety of jars that my neighbors, who toss their jars, have saved for me. I inherited a number of ancient canning jars with the glass top and metal wire that secures the top. I have purchased rubber bands for them. I am curious if the Vacuum chamber would seal these jars? I am at a loss of how to experiment since I don't think they create a hiss when opened. Heidi, THANK YOU for any advise you can offer on this.

I am really not sure on that. I doubt it would work with the bail wire in place but it might if one puts the rubber gasket and glass lid on and tries to seal that way. If the lid is firmly in place when removed from the chamber, then it has work. Then a person could put the bail wire in place.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this or not so please forgive me if this is redundant. This seems like a very good idea all around, but I actually worked in the plumbing dept of a very large box store for several years. I learned that there are SO many ways of going about the same thing when it comes to plumbing. This could have been built with much less expensive pieces, instead of schedule 40 pressure PVC, DWV thin wall can be used and the advantage there is also a completely flat bottom cap.
@RainCountryHomestead

Patrick worked in water treatment and also fixed many main breaks so he is very familiar with all types. I know some tried to make this same thing out of other types of 4" PVC pipes and the interior diameter was too narrow for their quart jars. He also now makes the half gallon chambers with 6" pipe.

If I am working through a jar quickly enough, no, I do not vacuum seal them but really, it is best they be sealed up between long uses or they turn stale. Dehdyrated foods are not as bad when it comes to that though, many dehydrated things can do just fine with a tight fitting lid but it is still always best to reduce the size of the jars when you work through it so there is less air space in the jar

I have a dozen jars bought at the store that had foods in them (chutney, olives, etc) and used them for dehydrated and powdered foods. I used your chamber, pumped until nearly 700 and they sealed. However, they lasted only about five minutes then pinged and unsealed. I checked the rubber in the lids to be sure they are not damaged or dry and if one or two pinged then I'd put those up to poor lids, but they all pinged. What, if anything, am I not doing correctly? Also. The chamber lids has a warning to stand back while in use .. how far back? For the whole process? Just when pumping? Just when removing the lid (and how do you stand back to do it)? At which point is this 'dangerous' and what's the worse that could happen if something goes wrong?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
If you are not putting a barrier over the top of your powders before putting the lid in place, you will not get a good seal. You will need to clean the inside of the lids to remove all powder debris and wipe the jar rim again after putting a barrier in place. Please see this video-: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omfFhqpsoKegZ80 That warning on the lid is for the intended use of the plug which has nothing to do with the vacuum chamber so you do not need to worry about that at all.
