That Filipino male teacher was too kind. He should have shouted back to that ignorant Korean woman in the bus, “I’m here to teach your kids how to speak English and to behave properly so they don’t grow up to be as ignorant as you!” Then hit her with a lawsuit. East Asians are still in need of civility and Christian conversion despite having achieved some semblance to order. I did not let that ruining my experience in Seoul, because I had great times in Seoul as a black american man. This was also what I had in mind when talking about English Accent. What's so great about American Accent or British Accent? It was their mother tongue. Totally agree! I don't get it when accent becomes an issue. British people naturally have the British accent BECAUSE they are British and so with the Americans who definitely have the American accent. Do you expect them to have an Australian accent? Why speak about the obvious? Actually, Americans do have different accents too. They have the North American accent, and the South American accent or the Cali accent. Why do you expect Filipinos to have a British accent or an American accent when Koreans do have an accent too? It's really the ability to communicate that is more important. Remember, even two people with the same accents do have misunderstandings when they can't communicate well.

When CHRIS was questioned about his ability to teach English, he handled the situation very well. Instead being overly-defensive or sensitive about it, he managed to find a common ground with that person. It eventually became the reason why that Korean enrolled to be his student. The difference between learning fom a native speaker vs a non-native speaker is that the latter has first-hand experience in learning English as a 2nd language. They automatically have a connection w/ their students & would easily understand how it feels to learn and adjust to English.

I remember back in 2018 where I competed in Taekwondo, it was an invitational competition and thankfully there's a lot of filo taekwondo athletes that time who also joined and competed. That time it was very cool to be in a foreign country without your parents just your younger sibling, coaches, and teammates but what I didn't expect is that knetizens would literally talk behind your backs thinking we (more likely me because I'm the only one who was able to understand) wouldn't be able to understand them. It really hurts because you are an athlete and you are there to compete and enjoy all new learnings. It hurts saying that "we are so noisy" "unwelcomed athletes" "we should go back home". Even if my fam and I went to other foreign countries for vacation I would always here people being racist.

Of course. I was an English tutor exclusively for korean students here in the Philippines. The kids would always say that Filipinos are poor and are just living good because of them, funny but i think they get these thoughts from their parents. I went to S.Korea in 2018, in the bus I was standing and it was quite cramped inside, my knees touched a woman's leg, she was sitting, but she tried kicking my legs to push me away. S.Korea doesnt feel like a warm country to me, no matter how much filipinos embrace their culture. My opinions based on my experiences.

Here in middle-east, we combine languages like a combination of English, Arabic, Hindi, Malayam, Nepali, Tagalog. If we need to break each sentence or word it's okay as long as we understand each other (with a full-body sign, not just a normal hand gesture while speaking). I’m a foreigner and I’ve been living here in South Korea for 10 years because of my dad job. Just recently I want to get a new sim for my phone but the owner won’t gave me one since I’m a Filipino. I have alien card but after seeing my passport the shop owner still say no and said that it’s a new policy of the government something. In my thoughts 🤬 Like, what’s your problem with us? Oh, not only that, recently also, I was applying for a job, then the person interviewing me what’s my nationality, after saying that I’m a Filipino, he then do a judge look. Then told me that they don’t accept Filipino’s and said that That my kind should work on the bar only or something blah blah blah… The discrimination is so 🤬 real. I don’t generalize all korean cause I have korean friends and classmates also but most Koreans do judge your skin color, your nationality, your look and everything. Especially oldies. Well, some younger ones but mostly oldies. It’s hurt.

My wife is from Davao and you are right about Filipinos and English. She's been speaking it all her life. There are kids now whose only main language is English! And even in the heart of the country on a little island where you don't know the dialect they'll speak English. For Asian countries this is massive. It make the Philippines stand out for foreigners like you say. But it's also great to learn Filipino languages because you can just use English when you don't know how to say things. You end up with Taglish for example.

Filipinos are known for being friendly and generous, so I actually love giving gifts for every season like, pepero day, valentines, etc. And almost everyday, I might have missed a day or a week for 4yrs but I love giving candies, chocolates or coffee to my co workers and someone asked me, "Are you rich? Aren t you living a wood house in Ph?" Like what the h. And they keep on saying like, "Aren t philippines like people living with a gun?" I'm from the PH and I'm ashamed to admit to being insensitive to other cultures during my younger years back in the 90s. Particularly to indians and chinese folks. We call them 'Bumbay' and 'Intsik beho' for reasons I didn't really know. All that gradually changed when I became friends with quite a lot of them in school. I remember during a soccer match tinisod ako ng kalaban, by tinisod I mean the soccer version of tinisod AKA sinipa... *Guess who was there to defend me? My indian friend.* . In high school, special PE ako since I was getting bullied all the time. Korean yung tennis buddy ko and he was one of my best buddies back then. Joo Hyuk if you're reading this, tara laro minsan. HAHAH. . So anyway, definitely exposure, diversity, and respect will play a HUGE part in putting an end this ridiculous thing we call racism.

is that racist though? I've heard my parents use those words to refer to Indian and Chinese people. There's isn't anything derogatory being said when they mention those terms though. I feel like those words are different from a word like "egoy" which kinda implies an ignorant/ uneducated person of African descent. If "egoy" is used, it probably means something derogatory but using the word "negro" (pronounced the Filipino/ Spanish way, of course) or "itim" wouldn't be racist.

To be honest, I personally have never been exposed to racism even if I've lived and worked in the US. Even when I burried my father in Missouri. As an asian, people's looks did not matter to me. Even if I had a conversation with a cousin about how "poor" the philippines was, I told him we had five maids. I personally had a maid who would looke after me. He shut up after hearing I had my own personal maid.

When I went to Korea before the pandemic idek but they were actually nice and patient. When I would try to speak in Korean with errors at times, they politely corrected me. Then there would be times that they would even approach me to have small talks (which was weird) and sometimes ask me for directions when I was in Hongdae like I be internally saying "I'm even a tourist here. Why would you ask me?"

It's true that (MANY and not some) Koreans look down on Filipinos. You will notice this on their choice of words that they use with you and their body language. They would even be surprised and look you up and down if you dress better (or in designers) than them. That's when I was there. Here, the older men have this thinking that every Filipino can be paid off. The younger ones feel like they're oppas from K-dramas. The few Koreans that I personally know to be decent are the ones that stayed in the PH for a long time. It's actually not about racism but superiority (or the feeling of). Just because they don't say it, doesn't mean it's not true.

I've been binge watching Ms. Jessica's videos and i think that it is worth our time. We could learn something new as a filipino. I enjoyed this particular video/content.
