Do locks need Ultra Wideband? Xthings puts the theory into concept at

Security Business magazine Editor Paul Rothman caught up with Matthew Brown of Xthings at the #CES #Pepcom event to check out the company’s latest offering, a UWB-enabled smart lock.
The ULTRALOQ Bolt Mission UWB + NFC leverages ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, the same technology commonly used in digital car keys, to sense the keyholder's phone location with centimeter-level accuracy, determining both distance and direction of approach. This spatial awareness enables automatic unlocking as users approach from the outside and also prevents unintended unlocking when users are inside their homes.
Note that the atmosphere at Pepcom with competing and struggling wifi signals made the demo an issue; however, it is important for the #security industry to see emerging use-cases for UWB.

UWB sounds AMAZING on paper but until UWB won't be locked to premium only phones (just like NFC used to be 15 years agi) this technology will stagnate for few more years until we get something good in our everyday life.
