Marketplace is putting some of the biggest meal delivery companies to the test to find out what gets recycled and what gets tossed. Are the recycling claims as green as they look or just greenwashing?

There's something that's hard for us as consumers to acknowledge, and it's that we have a big demand for cheap, convenient packaging. Are consumers willing to pay more for higher cost environmentally packaging or sacrifice convenience with returnable containers? It eases our conscience to point our fingers to companies that are not environmentally friendly, but in reality it's consumer demand for bite-size packaging and convenience that encourages these companies to continue with these practices.

I feel like you are missing the point with some of this recycling talk. Technically the packaging that is labelled recyclable IS recyclable, just not in most municipalities because we have too much plastic and it is not affordable for places to recycle it. In reality, most plastic that goes into your bluebin gets sent to the landfill in the long run, either because it can't be recycled in your area or because there is too much new and cheap plastic and there's no demand for recycled. The biggest difference these companies could make would be to use reusable packaging. It doesn't seem like it would be too much of a stretch because many people are getting regular deliveries from them already. Just have your used containers be picked up when your new box is being delivered.
@greeleyestateslove

The price of pretty much every bale has gone way up in covid. Feedstocks selling like crazy. Not enough supply....erm because consumers don't know how/what to recycle (i dont blame them at ALL). I just went to a conference and lots of the talk were how to grow the feedstock/supply. Because the demand is there.
@warrenhammer7262

Reusable packaging would require the company to send over a vehicle to retrieve them, which may not be profitable. (Unless the customer is on a subscription, and they pick up the older one as they deliver the new one) Disposable packaging is a huge issue, pre-plastic everyone used reusable glass bottles (for milk), or other metal/wood containers, but now everything gets bought and thrown away. Also, the health ramifications of all this cheap plastic packaging, (plastic leeching), when compared to safe glass and steel

I live in Germany and ordered a HelloFresh box once. I realize that they are fewer plastics here in Germany than in Canada. But again, they used tons of other stuff for cooling. Basically, half of the box was filled with those stuff with which I didn't have a clue what to do. Nor were they clear about which bin these things should go to. So I just did not continue to buy those meals, just went to a normal supermarket instead.

Our government has to ban this kind of packaging. Period. Costco sells north 65,000,000 rotisserie chickens per year. They also sell millions of cheesecakes, tuxedo cakes. All of these Costco products use black plastic which isn't recyclable in most municipalities across Canada. The solution: use any other colour of plastic. Simple enough, right? Wrong! Costco refuses to do anything about it. I don't buy this. I can't imagine any plastic vendor that wants to lose a Costco contract. IMO, all Costco needs to do is to demand better from their vendors. That's all. Costco to suppliers: give us a non-black plastic option or we are taking our business elsewhere. And if we can't trust Costco to do better then our government has to ban this non-recyclable packaging. For a short while I would buy the rotisserie chicken and cheesecake from Costco and then I would return it to their service desk. They weren't pleased. We all need to speak up about this. Switching plastic packaging colours should not take 75 suits six years to figure out.

I don't use those kinds of things but the recycling part of it caught my attention. I have lived in my 2bdrm apartment for 19yrs & always have a dumpster so never thought of recycling, until my mom wanted to take stuff to the bins and I realized how easy it was to recycle. Since she wants me to take her & I am going I have been taking what I can & recycling it. My biggest problem with it is not everything is recyclable even though it says it can be recycled but that's not the case. It's very frustrating when you want to try and help the environment and make it a better place for future generations but you don't know if it can be recycled in "your area." That's my biggest problem with it, some stuff is not recyclable in my area. Anyway thanks for sharing this video!! Hopefully one day recycling will be just part of every day life for everyone!!!
