As a quiet woman, I realized I needed a quiet man. 1) I found gregarious men to be overwhelming. 2) I enjoy the traditional relationship where the woman talks more. My ex would be playing his video games and I'm in my corner reading and suddenly he'd say "I don't feel like you care about us". Were you his first gf? Sounds like he had some toxic ideas about what a relationship looked like. Some folk think if there isn’t constant conflict then a relationship isn’t “exciting” and there’s something wrong. Often whatever parent relationship that was modeled for them as a kid is a factor too. Without therapy, people tend to gravitate toward the unhealthy/toxic/abusive people and environments they grew up with bc it’s familiar and they know how to operate in them. It’s not guaranteed, it’s just a trend. He coulda been used to someone toxic like he described, because even if it drove him nuts before like “ugh women are so clingy”, it made me feel valued and wanted in a round about way. @@Joyride37 I totally agree. My parents are very independent of each other. Like my mom always had her own things going on despite being a housewife for a lot of my childhood. She had her own businesses, did a lot of things in the community etc. And my dad supported her in all of her endeavours even when it didn't involve him. My ex's parents got divorced when he was a kid and it got messy and was bad for years with his parents getting together and breaking up over and over. There was always a fight, some drama going on between his parents and, now that I'm thinking about it, his past relationships we're also like that (I've known him for years before we got together). I don't feel bad about breaking up, I just feel sad for him. He didn't need another relationship, he needed therapy.

I noticed that I do the same thing. Except- When they see the real me they can’t stand it because I will show them who they really are by mirroring their behaviour back. They prefer me when I’m quiet, mistaking me for the agreeable one. They don’t know I’m assessing them and will test them for hypocrisy and character. The advantage is they think women are stupid. They might spoil you until they realise you won’t pander to their bad behaviour or insecurities. Men who want a quiet girlfriend don’t actually want a girlfriend. Relationships are about mutual respect, care and interest. If your “girlfriend” is talking too much for you, maybe you are in the wrong relationship because you don’t seem to value her perspective. All relationships need to have boundaries, and guys can ask to have time to play their games and watch their sports. There must also be some compromise. So, for example, if you are living together, all your free time can’t just be sports and games, but also helping her so she can have some relaxation time too. There also needs to be bonding time outside the bedroom where you share mutual interests. If you are at a party, you shouldn’t be the only one having fun. It’s not hard. Just act like you actually like the person you are dating.

Once I met my current boyfriend I didn’t realise how different relationships could be. I remember every relationship I had before him was stale. I would be affectionate. Try and be understanding and show interest and shit and they would never tell me anything about themselves. They would never cry in front of me. They wouldn’t trust me or tell me anything which was really goddamn annoying. It felt like I was talking to a robot and their excuse was always I’m nonchalant. They would compliment me like crazy the first time we met, but then after that nothing. Not a single compliment from them. The man I’m dating currently respects me, cherishes me, messages me without me having to message him, constantly checks up on me. Try’s to make sure I’m happy, gives me nothing but affection and reassurance. He’s always supportive, is open about his life with me and trusts me. He tries to understand my hobbies, even though he might not have the same hobbies. We laugh together all the time and enjoy each other’s company. I’m genuinely shocked that I ever tolerated the bullshit I did before.

To be fair about the crying part, there are way too many stories of a guy's girlfriend or wife losing respect for them and leaving them afterward. It doesn't always happen of course, but it happens often enough that it isn't worth risking. I don't like it, but there are so many stories of this happening that it doesn't feel worth the risk. I am very direct, observant, and quick witted (also have AuDHD which means I don’t observe social rules and cannot lie to save my life) plus I am very independent and self sufficient. So many men love these qualities in me at first. A girl that takes care of herself, saids what she thinks, can perceive nuances and different perspectives and communicates that clearly. No guessing games. They LOVE it, until …. They do some fuckery (normally cheat) and forget how observant, direct I am and that my value for myself and my independence means I don’t NEED them I have been CHOOSING to be with them. Then all of a sudden, I’m too much, too intense and I’m the problem because I’ve pulled a mirror up to their behaviours because I also don’t just bin them but I want them and myself to understand and learn but thats far too vulnerable and inconvenient for them so their appreciation for my passion apparently becomes my biggest flaw… like ok. And no not “all men” but this is a regular pattern I have seen. 80% of them come back months later apologising and admit that’s exactly what happened. They want someone real, until it gets real 🤗

I was always the quiet girlfriend. I'm an introvert so I mostly just speak when spoken to in social situations, especially if I don't know anyone yet. I was always quiet around my exes friends and family, but still polite and friendly. That was not good enough either. At this point you have to ask yourself what it is that men truly want.
