Do Minecraft's Mobile Controls STILL Suck?

Minecraft Bedrock Edition's mobile controls have historically, well... sucked. There have been some recent new touch control updates though, that seem to have made them better. Is that actually the case, though? In this video, I discuss that, and even try them out myself by fighting KZbinrs @SuperGamerDX and @JitR on the Hive Minecraft server. For split controls, you either can learn the old one, or the new controls. You can’t get good at both because of the difference between how you aim on each one. Getting good at one, will make you worse at the other one. If anyone plans to learn the new controls, I suggest you stick with the new controls and don’t go back to the old ones, unless your non split.

We definitely need full customization for these controls - The good news is that on the Reddit thread for the original beta release of the new controls, Mojang devs mentioned multiple times that they were looking into more customizability. However, I am a little worried that its been more then half a year and we really haven't heard much more about it since.

I agree with jitr. I’m a mobile main and when I first started the new controls I was absolutely horrible. I thought that I would be able to jump bridge and all that fancy stuff but no, I didn’t realize u would need 14 fingers to be good at the new controls. As someone who's played mostly on mobile for 7 or 8 years, I feel a hybrid of the new and old would work well. I'm very attached to the old arrow buttons with jump in the middle and don't care for the new joystick like way of movement, but the new buttons for attacking and interacting are much better.

if minecraft soon adds customization, It might be very good but for now, I like the old controls better . Aiming on the new controls seems a bit tougher for me since if you use one hand to aim and tap attack at the same time, your finger cant reach too far to keep attacking at the same time so its kinda hard to fight someone who jump all around you or keeps strafing ( on Ipad ) I also hope minecraft adds an option to use the new action buttons and to enable old dpad since I like it very much

I think the new joystick is good but that’s it. I feel like it should allow complete customization; if you like the new controls but you want the d pad you can have the d pad. I would prefer to have the joystick and then the jump button on the side and to crouch you just hold down on the jump button.

I kinda prefer old controls since pvp will be alot harder when u are running away (since u have to run, move the camera, jump and hit your enemy) with the new controls, but thats just my opinion

Ive played mcpe since like 10-11 years now so yes Im definitely not used to the new controls, but theres so any potential missed by not adding customization options. For example, I want to have old controls with more buttons, thats it. Specifically for sneak, jump, put block (change to split control to put block while still being able to use non split control on attacking mode), entities interaction (riding a boat, fishing etc, + add using fireworks for elytra, they should do this!) while still having the old controls. Of course, we should also have options to get new controls with customization but thats just my opinion as a long (non pvp-ish, been a long time I havent go to server because of pc+mobile integration) time player.

Fun fact you can actually customize the controls and you can remove the fight and place button but that's for me bc it's hard to control with those buttons

A really good tip I use with the mobile controls is to not pvp in a way similar to the old PVP gui. The new mcpe pvp buttons make it possible to aim while attacking, which greatly improves accuracy instead of flicking your aim to the enemy every 4 seconds.

As an ex mobile playing I’m don’t think I’ll ever stop defending the classic mobile controls even if it’s just from bias, I mean I loved them and they got the job done pretty damn well, also you can’t definitely bridge quickly (it takes a lot of risk but still possible).

The customization i want for the new controls is that the "Hit/Attack" Button is Draggable so your not stuck with crabbing but if you hold the Hit button it auto start hits then if you drag then the aim moves with it

I really like the new mobile controls, But I do have 1 gripe: I noticed there is a small delay with the interact button. You can notice this the most when using the leap on death run. Not sure of this is just a death death run thing or not, but I know back then I noticed the delay was longer in older versions. Also I do like the idea of custom control placement since as a mobile player, I typically play with a texture pack to make the controls invisible, and having the control buttons be right next to each other makes it really easy to press the wrong button.

By the way, there is a bug with the new controls where you cannot sneak underwater (which means you cannot sneak underwater in a magma block to get air)

Since no one has mentioned this, there is a way to at least limit the amount of things you have to use buttons for. If you go into settings, onto the touch-screen settings, you'll find that you can actually change having to use a button to hit, and open things.

I really like the old controls. They are just so buggy. On example of a bug is dpad glitch, where sometimes if you try to sprint while hitting someone, it won’t let you sprint and even messes up your aim by making you look with the finger on the w button. I also wish there was an option to add a toggle sprint button to the classic controls so that when you tap the button, you can just automatically start sprinting every time you tap the w button. Then when you don’t want to sprint anymore, you can just turn off the toggle sprint by pressing the button, but you can still sprint by tapping the w button twice. I would use the new touch controls, but I like playing with only my thumbs and the only controls I can actually do that on is the classic controls

I hate the new controls, not because their bad, but because their not a good solution for improving “Touch controls.” The new controls are not touch controls, their based off of controllers, and not actually interacting with your screen. If anything, it feels like a slap to the face. We are never going to get better controls. Just stuff that caters to other ways of playing.

mine (as a claw player) wouldve been a button on the upper left for building/using, a button on the upper right for breaking/hitting, jump on the bottom right alongside crouch, joystick/dpad on bottom left i play on my phone and i really hate the controls, both new and old. mojang kinda sold ngl, and idk why this would be a beta feature. just release it and slowly improve it as its not gonna give you an upper hand against players on controller or kbm.

I think the new radial thing is pretty nice. But honestly, I miss the days you can make it absolutely giant. I suck at holding phones, and so having it be a giant set of buttons instead of being a quarter of my phone's size would've been just great.

You know if we had full customization over these buttons my layout would be hiding the attack button.The right click ,jump and crouch buttons are still there its only the attack button that is hidden.I want it to work like the old one i just tap at the person or mob and it will attack but for right clicking i need to press the button.This is just the most confortable setup i can ever do for some reason

Yeah, the customizations of the buttons would be the greatest thing for mobile. It would help alot when surviving tough situations in the nether dimesion and would be better overall.

For me what's annoying is you can't swipe and hit or interact at the same time. For example you have to swipe/aim and then interact. If you try to aim and interact at the same time, it will cancel your aim and just interact. Q: Why is it annoying? A: Your movement is limited to fight in PVP or Skyblocks. Not just that. It's really annoying when there's multiple mob chasing you from 2 dirrection. I just hope they change aiming and interacting could be done for the same time Edit: i use split screen, that's why it's annoying. I don't use free tap, because im not used to it

I use a clear nyko Bluetooth controller (cheapest local store had) for pe. Not all actions can be programed to buttons and I also notice you can reach further with touch control. So I actually go between using controller and touch screen. Haven't tried new touch screen yet or mouse keyboard.

I have played on mobile the entire time I played minecraft, and I got really used the to main one where you click, but then they added more new controls, and even changed the old ones, and for some reason it won't let me change them back to the old ones or adjust them to the place I want them to be. In which, I never had the time to play minecraft because I can't even play the game anymore, knowing that minecraft won't let me change it back (And yes, I know, I am not blind, I used the settings to change them, but for some reason it doesn't work for me)

Ive always prefered the default buttons. (The ones we had for years) And I still use them, but now they have the new UI/look. But it's actually annoying for me now because I can't drag my finger to go from going straight forward to going forward-right/forward-left. A lot of the time, my charecter will stop before I can drag my finger unless I do it very quickly. I know its a small thing, but It makes my experience on Mobile Minecraft very annoying. I wouldn't mind if I could have that circle pad, but with the rest being the old controls. But im just stuck in a weird position. I appreciate the options though, just wish I can drag my finger to move without it stopping me.

I would've chosen the D-pad, if they hadn't changed it. Although after trying, the new controls are a LOT more better than the old D-pad and new D-pad, it's only up after you customise them too. Now I get that the customise option is experimental, but it's very annoying as under heavy lag situations which happens on one specific spring map on Cubecraft, the controls just reset. They also reset when you use the floating windows feature on your phone. I don't have a problem as it is experimental, but when they're implemented, I'd still not care that much. It's just a tiny bit frustrating as I have to customise them again.

The only thing I’ve gotta say tho is that when I went back and had to pick which control layout I picked the old ones I thi no the new ones are even worse

Myself prefer using the old control, but the jump and then sneak position switched

They can make like you can add buttons like f5 ,f1 ,left click ,right click. Also they can make that we can't add the same like if we have left click button then not another. But i don't think it will come before a year because 1.20.

5:10 customization is still WIP (work in progress) some people found we can place where button can place decide where you want

My favorite control scheme is the old controls with the crosshair turned on, but I'm probably looking through rose tinted glasses

I played pocket edition since my childhood so I use the old arrow controls for years and still now

The problem is the controls where made when a time the game didn't have sprinting also where you only got matched with other mobile players now you get matched with ppl on console and PC so it's a bit dated I mean atleast let us move the buttons around and resize them look at PUBG mobile and codm etc

there is an option in settings called split control. it makes thing so much better
