This did a really good job of pointing out and bringing down the slight differences in mechanics that most people starting off would not notice. Me personally I’m more of puncher anyways so I like my punches to have more leverage and weight into them but know when to adjust if I want to change to a more kick friendly strategy or if I see that my opponent is trying to exploit my boxing style by throwing a lot of low kicks to the front calf and thigh I adjust my stance to better prepare to check them

Great Post as per usual Coach. I actually had this discussion with one of my coaches earlier this evening at training. I come from a traditional karate background and my stances are long and deep for Muay Thai. I’m new to MT and I’m finding the transition a little bit weird. Several years of karate, a couple of years of boxing and new to Muay Thai. Right now, it’s all weird for me. Thanks again for your helpful post Coach. Here’s hoping that you and all of your loved ones are remaining healthy and safe during this time of Global Covid Craziness. Kindest regards, David from Toronto Peace

I think it depends on what boxing school we are talking about and its a pity that most people only know this american-style, philly boxing in a bladed stance and with walking around the ring on flat feet. For example classical soviet/russian and english amateur boxing uses bouncing constantly, so the "karate" references for McGregor are totally out of place, it is classic boxing movement that karate borrowed in the 60s. But foot placement or pivoting can be adjusted, however the one KEY thing (K-1 style) kickboxers totally lack in boxing is the in and out movement, head movement, slips and feints, which is why adding good classical boxing to your arsenal will change your game dramatically and you can literally toy with most lower level kickboxers once you add boxing mobility to your game - most of these people never had to deal with moving target or feints and will just stand in front of you like a sitting goose.

Very nice and clear explanation! I switched from MT/Kickboxing to boxing due to a hip in jury. I thought I could box decently, but man was I wrong! Felt like I had to start from the beginning. Head movement, footwork, bodyshots etc. I recently started MT again and have to be careful not to put my weight on the front foot ;)

I come from a long background of kickboxing, wrestling, and mma, but have been teaching myself how to box on my own for the last 7 years. I just joined a boxing gym and the coaches have only needed to tweak my stance, good position and guard,to cut off the angles from leaving spaces for hands to sneak in, but as far as footwork, head movement, hand speed, power, and accuracy, nothing but compliments. I don't see kickboxing and boxing as having opposite stances or guards, I see them both as different tools in one fighting style that is ME. I can switch between different stances, depending on the opponents angle of attack, distance, openings, and abilities. The key is in mastering each separately AND working on transitional footwork and drills.

I feel like traditional boxing is more beneficial in Muay Thai than it is on Kickboxing. As you say it is hard for a kickboxer to finish with a kick using traditional boxing because of the backfoot coming forward for weight transfer making it too close which i find somewhat useful in muay thai because of closing distance means clinch plus thai fighters dont do combos.

I can honestly agree, I have trained in muay tai for a couple of months really working on my kicking power and punching speed, I had a sparring session with a boxer under boxing rules, he dominated the entire session and I could barely touch him, I had to continually fight the urge to throw any type of kick or elbow so the body mechanics of boxing made it hard to adapt, boxing and other disciplines are not the same!

My question is why do more kickboxers and thai boxers transition to boxing? Is it to do with improving punches? I think a lot of you guys have good hands already. I transistioned from karate to boxing to muay thai. I wanted to kick like a thai. I learned how to adjust my footwork if I wanna throw hands or kick. I felt like all those karate years are wasted tho.

Why do Muay Thai fighters tend to have a very narrow stance compared to Kickboxers? Especially when Muay Thai emphasizes kicking significantly more than Kickboxing? Could you do a video on the technical differences between Muay Thai and Kickboxing and why the technical differences exist?

@@andrewwoods564 I guess I’m not sure why kickboxers stand longer then, bc they need to check low kicks too. Sacrificing more damage to leg in order to be able to kick harder? If a more narrow stance is better for punching and checking kicks than I think I’d prefer that over a stance that allows me to rear kick and knee harder but isn’t as good for punching and checking kicks.

@davidolmos6335
@davidolmos6335 2 жыл бұрын
I would say that the Muay Thai stance is also used in Kickboxing but as a defensive stance. Weight is simply transferred to the rear leg more instead of being equally balanced. In Muay Thai, taking arm kicks scores while they don't in kickboxing. So, often times, you want a defensive stance so that you check kicks more instead of shelling up like in kickboxing with a high guard.

Amazing insight and great comparison. In boxing, there are some boxers who are using the long stance or maybe not exactly the long stance as far as the angles of the feet but in a sense that their feet are wider apart. Even Canelo used to have a longer boxing stance up until the Golovkin 2 fights where he was often reaching and missing punches against fighters with greater mobility. After his second fight against GGG he narrowed his stance and began hunting much larger and mobile fighters with much more ease. Boxers like Kovalev, Jacobs, Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders. Additionally, you could have a longer stance in boxing the way Oscar De La Hoya did. I can't think off the top of my head of any other boxer with a kickboxing stance or wide stance but Oscar De La Hoya comes to mind immediately.

I don't get the stance point. boxing is usually associated with a longer stance than muay thai/kickboxing. Muay thai is traditionally very narrow. and the reasons are kicking and checking. (take Petrosyan or Buakaw, just to point to some big names as neat examples)
@rgrtnyjjc
@rgrtnyjjc 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I noticed that too. Muay Thai favours the narrow stance due to kicking (quicker and less telegraphed) and checking, while the boxing wider stance provides a good base for footwork and planting the feet when throwing combinations.
@davidolmos6335
@davidolmos6335 2 жыл бұрын
Another difference is that Muay Thai stance is squared and you transfer weight to back leg. Not long stance but Joe is talking kickboxing not Muay Thai. He does go over the Muay Thai stance in other videos but refers to it as a defensive stance. In boxing, front foot is pointing in instead of forward to give a lesser target when facing opponents. Weight is balanced on both feet but sometimes transferred to front leg

Kicks are powerful. Why limit yourself to only punching? That's why there's kickboxing or American full contact Karate. Like I used to take a more boxing based combative in my Krav Maga class, but I switched to a Kyokushin fight class last year (and also supplemented by boxing punches and moves). The skills from Kyokushin Karate is easily transferable to kickboxing (K1 fighters in the 1990s were mostly Kyokushin and Seidokaikan fighters besides Dutch and American kickboxers).

Do you mean which stance is better? If you want to practice mainly kickboxing, focusing on being good at the kickboxing stance is obviously ideal - but learning proper boxing stance and how to use it for in-fighting / power shots and how to use boxing defense can be extremely valuable (especially slipping/rolling punches and how to break an opponents striking momentum).
