This is all so true! Being a PA for a longer time is not leading anywhere. Working hard and going beyond any other is not helping our career. In the end, bros choose eachother and there is nothing we can do about it. I'm happy for you! Realizing this and moving on is the best thing you can do for yourself. Even if that means doing something else some day. I've reached a point where I realize no "mentor" is going to pick me up. My mind is wandering to other career opportunities with less "brotherhood", less extreme hours, more loyalty, longer lasting relationships and even possibilities working your way up. I guess I'm just tired after years of giving 110% without any results. :-)

Pinned your comment cause you get it!! It’s sad to hear of others having the same experience!! But you have to do what’s best for you! I hope that if you do choose another career path you still keep your filmmaking love and do it on the side!! But I completely understanding people leaving this industry. “Cut throat” isn’t even the word!!

@@LizNeptune I don't think my love for film and photgraphy will ever go away! I'm always going to do something creative on the side, but in the future it's hopefully going to be more fun and less because I have bills to pay. :-)

I’m not familiar with the film industry and how it works but I do know about the “work your way up” lie that gets told to people at work. Some jobs just will never promote people not matter what. You have to switch jobs for yourself and not be loyal to any company. Be loyal to yourself.

Being loyal only to yourself is the way! 🙏🏽

Yes, especially for indie/independent films. It's cool to be a Production Assistant in a big budget studio productions films, but in the independent/indie films, you got to learn other positions in other departments to see which one fits you more.

Thank you for keeping it a buck. People think it's easy and really don't understand everything. Now, if you want to learn stuff, yeah, being a PA and working at a camera shop is good. But you have to have done some research before. But I think being an extra on a film in the best way to observe how the crew works. I've learned film school is really beneficial in learning about cameras along with doing my own personal research and working on small indie films. I find you have to find the right people in film. There are TONS of jerks in film. My goodness. The men and women, but really the men. I've just invested in myself and working on building a production company. If no one hires me, I'm tryna create it for me and the rising crew.

You said IT ALL right there! That’s the whole point of my video! It’s a lot of gatekeeping in this industry and it’s completely not in your control to move up! So you have to promote yourself! And yes, it’s both men and women. The one person that “traumatized” me the most in this industry was a female line producer!!! She was a MONSTER. Smh!

I know very little about the film industry but @20:14 it seems to me it is really about who you know and if your face fits. Like you said alot of DP's were White Males. Naturally they will promote their own. Despite Me Too and BLM minorities still have to fight to get ahead. It would not suprise me if most of the crew are also quite previliged. So money isnt an issue. It seems to me its a closed club with few who dont fit in making it. Good luck on your journey. @23:20 i bet that woman was very priveliged with money to back her up.

You hit the nail on the head for all! Actually many many people in film have wealthy parents head starts. Parents that buy them a lot of gear or they go to really great schools. And absolutely the way you look matters. It is extremely rare to see anyone in senior positions who looks like me or my weight. It’s sick.
