That's what Honda is for now. More expensive and has gone that route. The price reflects that. But even Honda doesn't give you the choice because they all come fully loaded with sunroofs to increase the price and profit. Too bad Toyota can't do it both ways and give the consumers both ways with choices up and down because in the end the consumer will pay for what they need or want. At least Toyota gives us a choice of a manual transmission which is rapidly disappearing being replaced by CVT😱🤮. Civics 1.5 engines are Turbo charged $$$$ primarily with ONE Civic SI model with manual trans only in sedan body no hatchback and regular aspirated engine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Corolla's robust and reliable credibility give it an edge to it's price (despite the crazy inflation that's even hitting the Civic hard). Yes there's much less HP and a weaker engine, but I feel that it's how reliable the car is that they can have such high prices considering the resale value is so high. When it comes to reliability, I would easily go with a Toyota over a Hyundai/Kia, and even a VW. Self-maintaining a Corolla is much easier than something like a Civic and frankly, it's cheaper too. So whilst I agree that the SE is the best trim to go, I wouldn't cut the LE out because of it's much lower price and high reliability. Also something to note, the 2023 models all come with a base engine of 2.0L w/ 169HP, which I think makes the LE more considerable for me! It's just the ridiculous prices that plague the entire auto industry right now that fray me away.
@poiema0226

The image Toyota worked so hard to build over decades, "Reliability = Toyota" stands firm. Thankfully, I don't think they really price in this brand premium on their cars. Most of their pricing really do make sense. The price for Corolla SE is more than reasonable among the line ups. Just that the price for LE this year, I think it is slightly high. 1.8L 139hp engine vs. all other competitors 2.0L engines (well except for VW's 1.5L turbo). Hard to state that competitors 2.0L engines are not as reliable, since they've been around for long time also. Just looking at the specs only, there aren't much reasons for LE to be more expensive. But IF ANYONE DISAGREES or THINKS OTHERWISE, you are probably correct! I am far from knowing everything. So do leave comment for me and others to learn :D

@@poiema0226 completely understandable. Especially if you consider that none of the Corolla trims provide major upgraded interior options like Leather seatings that dominate modern compact class. Then, I would agree with you that the '22 LE is overpriced and you could get a better Mazda3 2.0 possibly for better value. But going forward, im glad Toyota standardized the 2.0L 169HP engine for the base trim, and hoping it doesn't create a steep increase in the MSRP, I would say it would be a much more fierce competitor, considering that would be their base trim from now on. But for '22 Corollas to '20, I'll say I agree with you in that the LE's are too much.

As far as Honda goes specifically the Civic they are pricing those cars into another category that goes beyond what used to be an economy car with alot of these cars coming with sunroofs and other options from factory that jack up the cost to purchase.🤑 They will price themselves out of the market at this rate to compete with other more expensive high end brands. This puts Honda into another category of being much more expensive and not as reliable as Toyota as already proven.

If you plan on keeping the Corolla forever (20+ years) the L and LE is the safer model to get. This is because the 1.8L engine is the older port injection technology vs the newer 2.0L engine which is both Port and Direct injection. Direct injection requires more pressure which is never a good thing for long term reliability.

I leased an 2020 LE for 2.5 years and just got an 2022 SE manual. I can tell you that the fit and finish of the SE is far superior. It is better insulated with a quieter ride. The materials are improved throughout the car. The suspension is firmer and the car has much less body roll with sharper turn-in. The SE makes the LE feel like a cheap shitbox which honestly, I am still shocked by. The engine is miles better than the 1.8 and this is coming from someone who originally went with the 1.8 for its proven reliability record. But the hard to digest truth is that the 2.0 Dynamic force engine is just better in almost every way and will likely be just as reliable as the old engine. So take it from someone who actually lived with these cars: the SE is so much better in every way. I can even get the same fuel economy with the manual SE that I got with the LE CVT... Get the SE!

How is the CVT? I understand that Toyota is the only manufacturer with a first gear only CVT. I don't know if that is a deal breaker or not over the 6 spd. manual which would be more sporting to drive and last longer as I have heard too many negatives on CVT transmissions across the board on all brands which are cost cutting efforts by car companies to get the best MPG but a poor driving experience. More important is that CVT are throwaway transmissions that do not last or have the longetivity of a conventional auto trans. that can be repaired and unlike CVT MUST BE REPLACED WITH A NEW CVT TRANSMISSION. So any savings $$$ in MPG will negate the giant replacement 🤑cost of a new CVT. True or false?🤔 Also on a more positive note Toyota Corollas are still MADE IN JAPAN👍unlike Honda made in USA 🤢🤮and the Toyota Camry.🤮 The only other cars made in Japan are Mazda Miata and a few other vehicles models from Mazda that I know of.

I got a 2022 Corolla L manual.. and honestly I have no complaints. It’s a standard “boring” commuter car. The engine is the older 1.8 without VVTi (which is the main component that had issues with the older generations of those engines). It was literally the cheapest vehicle in the Canadian Toyota lineup, and was 25% less expensive than the cheapest Honda you can buy.. the perfect car for me. I don’t think they will offer the manual for Corolla in Canada for 2023 (maybe they will keep the option for the 2.0 engine tough). All in all couldn’t be happier

It’s a great alternative to the Civic. But I think the Mazda 3 is also an excellent alternative. The ONLY real selling point for the Corolla SE is the legendary Toyota reliability and longevity, although unproven for current models. That being said, my 2018 Civic EXT bought new June 2018 currently has 125,800 trouble-free miles averaging 34.1 mpg. The most expensive work done was replacing the water pump, drive belt, and PCV valve at 120,000 miles (maintenance, not repair) at the same time: $1,045. I’m going to either prove or disprove the reliability of the 10th gen Civic EXT, 1.5 liter, turbo, GDI, CVT by hitting at least 300k miles without repair to the engine, turbo, or CVT.

I traded my Japan-built 2020 TNGA Corolla SE sedan 6-MT after 9000 miles & 2.5 years due to several problems that Toyota seemed unable to resolve. Build quality & reliability these days is more potluck than ever, even with Toyota. My French-built 2015 Yaris SE hatch 5-MT was a much better built, problem free car & I should have kept it, in retrospect. Have had a Mexico-built 2022 Mazda CX-30 CE 6-AT AWD for 6 months now & have had zero issues or problems thus far (& I was looking for them). The 2.0L engine on the 2020+ TNGA Corolla is a nice design though, & smartly mixes both direct & port injection together.

Have it anyway you want it as you would be in control of how you want it equipped. Make mine a Toyota Corolla hatchback with 6 spd. manual transmission, Blind spot warning system, top of the line choice factory Toyota stereo system, wind chill white color or plain white exterior on a red color interior with choice of materials from fabric seats to leather or even vinyl just don't gives us that BLAND🤮 UTILITARIAN ugly interior as the ONLY interior. Would the Corolla Hybrid be better in the long run as the price is not much more than the SE upgrade package? Someone would be able to make for price premium the hybrid commands in the 1st year of driving alone. I know the wait will be longer given the circumstances. However, if someone is keeping this car for the long term, wouldn't it make sense to wait for the hybrid?
@poiema0226

That is a great point. Although, I try to separate gasoline and hybrid since they are designed to do different things. Gasoline vehicles will never beat hybrids on fuel economy. With current gas price, you will make up for that extra money you invested for hybrid very very shortly. But on the other hand, you won't have the driving experience gasoline cars provide (especially on a highway). So if you ask me, isn't hybrid more economical nowadays? Depends on how much you drive annually but yeah for sure. But if you ask me isn't hybrid overall a better pick? I will have to say it really depends on your priorities.

But for now, check TD Insurance out (Not 100% sure if BC TD rates are as favorable as Ontario). I've been using Belairdirect for 6 years, and changed to TD this year after comparing different insurance companies (Belairdirect is one of the cheaper place, but it is good to change your insurance provider time to time).
