2:45 to anyone who don't know why you can't wear a green hat in chinese culture, we have a "slang" which directly translate as "wear green cap", in short it means "NTR". So if anyone said something like "oh he wore a green cap" means that "that person got cheated by his/her partner"
@@solarnine2041 The mandarin pronunciation of the word "草" (cao3, grass) is similar as "操" , cao1. While the word "操" normally means to do/ organise sth, but when used as an intonation, or verb with bad intention, it means the F word. Ppl just replace the word with "草" (grass) to make it seem less indecent.

But...老外 isn't pejorative. Even outside of China, we still refer to non-Chinese with that term. It's as neutral as calling someone white or Asian.
@xiaosha15582 жыл бұрын
Chinese people always say it’s not bad, but a lot of the international folks I know (myself included) really don’t like it. I’ve been here long enough to see how and when it gets used - I’ve never heard it kindly or from someone who knows me personally. It’s always in a mocking way by people who assume I don’t know what they’re saying, and in context it generally feels dehumanizing. 外国人 is the neutral term. Just like with any other derogatory term, I think it’s the people the term is applied to who should get to decide whether or not it’s offensive, based on their experiences with it and the impact it has.
@YSFmemories Жыл бұрын
@@xiaosha1558 I don't see it as bad at all; in fact, it's supposed to be endearing; you know how amongst Chinese people, we always call friends "lao X" like "lao zhang", "lao wang" etc? Wai Guo Ren is much more distant and cold, and not even the slightest bit more polite. Actually though, I just read your comment fully and I think I see where you're coming from now, but I think you're misinterpreting their intentions and meaning and placing it on the word "lao wai" unfairly. In fact, they don't mean it in a rude way, and it's also not the only type of situation (or even the main one) people use the term lao wai; you just happen to hear it used that way all the time because you happen to be a foreigner and such situations arise fairly often for you. Of course people wouldn't call you "lao wai" if they are your personal friend; it's like if you called a friend of 10 years "chinese dude" constantly. That would be rude. Because you know them on an individual level. But lao wai really, truly isn't insulting in and of itself.
