Yes sometimes I will use a razor knife, put like you said it's a bit harder with multiple scores... and yeah I should have knocked each one of those tile loose before taking out the walls it would have been easier

Right, but it is a Gamble that one of those would not fail... so the question is who would take the Gamble
@MAGAMANКүн бұрын
@@StarrTile Tying into it seems like it could be quite a gamble too. if it's that fragile, it could break wherever you transition into it.
@StarrTileКүн бұрын
@MAGAMAN the transition is done with a copper nipple and the other side glued in...no failure will occur there. The biggest deal with CPVC is when you bend it or twist it after a few decades, it literally will snap elongated like a chicken bone... if it is never messed with it's usually fine.
@billyc50102 күн бұрын
I would never transition behind a new shower and leave ANY of that CPVC crap behind my work, especially when its exposed enough to transition at the very least, between the toilet and shower.

To be fair my job was not to remediate the plumbing, in fact I had to talk my customer into even getting a new valve. This was a three-story townhouse and the tiny 2% of Plumbing I was dealing with is nothing compared to the rest of the house... but I did take it back as far as I could
@MAGAMANКүн бұрын
If you want to do this without such a mess, use a razor blade along the edge of the tiles. It's more work, but much cleaner. You can also try prying off the tiles one at a time. In this case it probably would have been easy because they were on so poorly. That wall full of tile is very heavy and the tiles can be sharp as a razor. I've seen them cut through thick leather gloves and skin like it was nothing and a trip to the hospital doesn't save you time or money. Also be away that there are sometimes power lines behind shower walls. On my house the main power comes in behind the shower wall. If you accidentally cut through that, it will be the last mistake you ever make.

they used the shark due to the CPVC and finding 90's is hard since they are not the same size as PVC. I just have people replace as far back as I can with PEX. but if it was a company doing the work finding guys who have workmanship can be hard.
@StarrTileКүн бұрын
CPVC parts and glue are still accessible at both Lowe's and Home Depot and worst case scenario plumbing suppliers carry them.. especially 20 years ago when this townhouse was built they had access to the appropriate parts
@theartistone5860Күн бұрын
@@StarrTile yeah, they have a very small area for CPVC many times they don't have the right thing you need. But many times it's the home owners who have Wine taste Beer budget.

Exactly what I was going to say. Sharkbite is no different than the newer "pro fittings" which are widely accepted. It shows that when properly installed, they will last a long time. Also. The reason they didn't use shark bite on the spout is because that pipe has to be rigid and not rotate so the spout can be screwed on.
@brunowolfe9172Күн бұрын
12;15….granted, whoever put that valve system in was a twit. But this prejudice you have against sharksbite isn’t represented by the current product and evidence. You are swinging at windmills from 20 years ago bob
@StarrTileКүн бұрын
No it's not about the fact that it lasted 20 years without a failure, it's about the fact that it could fail and in this case one wall was completely tiled, in back of that wall was the next townhouse so if there was a failure it would have been catastrophic for both homeowners... and is the main reason we don't put shark bites in areas we cannot access. The fact that all six of those lasted 20 years is just pure luck

@@StarrTile everything can fail
@StarrTileКүн бұрын
@richardschipper5989 very much true, but doing it the right way with the proper connections is a better guarantee than doing it the wrong way with the potentially bad connection

They used the cheaper hardy board. If they would've used the cement hardy board the more expensive it would've came off in huge pieces

@aservant2287 it was Durock, Hardi doesn't have mesh in it. Had it been Hardi it would've been heavier, but easier.

Shark bites work of course never been an argument that shark bites do not work, the argument is will they last in a wall without failing and then what happens when/if it does fail
@warlok911 сағат бұрын
I have never in 25 years of doing this seen a sharkbite fail unless it was installed incorrectly. What I will never understand is pro fit is okay for inside a wall but sharkbite is not when they use the EXACT same oring to make the seal.
