Do NOT Fly Like This! Fix Your Plane! (Nose Wheel Shimmy Correction)

Solving a nose wheel shimmy that can have a damaging effect on an aircraft!
In this video (part 2 of 2 in this series), I tackle how to correct a nose wheel shimmy on my PA38-112 Piper Tomahawk. This video involves the overhaul of the torque link for the nose landing gear.
Many aircraft use torque links on nose landing gear in general aviation, experimental aviation, as well as commercial aviation. The same theory applies - eliminate excessive free play in all bushings and links and you will be doing your aircraft a huge favor!
Not correcting a shimmy can cause uneven wear on your tire, can accelerate the wear on your torque link, can damage steering linkages and can even cause cracking in your struts and engine mounts! (and can also cause loss of directional control on takeoff and landing rolls)
After the work was completed, I took the aircraft for a test flight over beautiful Southern Alberta to see if the shimmy has been corrected. Thank you for watching!

I learned to fly in a Tomahawk. The nosewheels on the 3 Tomahawks I flew had problems. One day on takeoff it seemed the nosewheel was shaking so bad it felt like the rudder pedals were getting stuck. I had a instructor with me and told him. He ignored it. On landing and taxing back to the tie downs the rudder pedal was getting jammed. I told him again. He ignored it. The following week that same plane was in the hanger all torn apart. The nose wheel collapsed on landing broken prop, engine mount, etc. The lesson. Fix small problems before the accident and thousands of dollars in property damage. Not to mention getting hurt or killed.

You've got that right! It was such an easy fix to prevent a pile of issues that could occur!

Those shimmies were the worst. The worst I felt was on the C152 for the one hour I did in VH-SCZ in Qantas colors.

If more pilots landed like you and left front nose gear off as long as possible it would help reduce shimmy damage. Dealing with this same issue on a warrior.

It definitely makes a difference in control of the aircraft and I'm sure my torque link bushings will last a long time now!
