I tell tower ready when I am ready to do so, if I'm number 2 I'll say second in sequence. Might help them in their sequence planning, especially if departing VFR and they can get me out between some IFRs. As a SEP, they might think you're still doing a run-up while holding short.

I agree with both points while holding short. Personally, if the radio itself is busy, I'll just wait. However if the radio is not buys, I'll make a quick call "cessna XYZ ready at 36 when you are" just to let the tower know I'm ready and willing

I had to take about a 4 month break from flying as my family moved down to Florida and you're absolutely right about losing proficiency. Yikes... my landings after those 4 months away... 😬 Still getting that touch back, but it helps drill that point home, that consistent time in the plane is super important.

Welcome back to Puerto Rico! I'll be listening for ya on the radio. I always go to Bartow, gas is cheap, pattern is usually empty and it's just a quick hop over. Winter Haven is always nuts with people cutting you off so I enjoy Bartow the most! It's like your channel has come full circle back to KISM.

Happy New Year. Every day I check KZbin for your marvelous videos. I always teach my students to communicate with the tower, especially at the hold short line. It gets all the W's out the way. As an instructor, I want to ensure the students have the situational awareness connection with tower. Waiting, in my humble opinion leads to assuming the tower is paying attention. As you well know, assume will make an ass out of U and Me. That way no one can come back and say, why didn't you call me, especially when every communication is on tape. It also ensures they have all the right info on who you are (0 Mike 7 alpha :) 😃and where you are. As a 15 year flight instructor, I love your perspective on proficiency and teaching style. Kudos to you sir.

Great Videos! May I ask what GoPro you use? I use the Hero 10 and while flying in the sun it often overheats and just shuts off... And as I see you also record quite long with one battery... greets

You wouldn’t wait to make any other radio call so it makes no sense to wait to tell tower that you’re ready to takeoff. Especially if the airport is busy, give the controller as much time to plan and know your intentions as possible.

haha thanks! Per the Aeronautical Information Manual: 1. Improper use of call signs can result in pilots executing a clearance intended for another aircraft. Call signs should never be abbreviated on an initial contact or at any time when other aircraft call signs have similar numbers/sounds or identical letters/number; e.g., Cessna 6132F, Cessna 1622F, Baron 123F, Cherokee 7732F, etc. 2. Pilots, therefore, must be certain that aircraft identification is complete and clearly identified before taking action on an ATC clearance. ATC specialists will not abbreviate call signs of air carrier or other civil aircraft having authorized call signs. ATC specialists may initiate abbreviated call signs of other aircraft by using the prefix and the last three digits/letters of the aircraft identification after communications are established. The pilot may use the abbreviated call sign in subsequent contacts with the ATC specialist. My take on it is not to abbreviate until the controller has abbreviated. That's not to say that I've never abbreviated first, but I don't think that's good practice. In todays situation the controller kept saying my call sign incorrectly, so to avoid confusion I read back my whole callsign for most of the flight until it became clear that he had it correct.
