I've lived in Pennsylvania for the 30 years originally from Upstate New York and I'll take the cold any day. Sometimes even here in the summer when it hits 90 something degrees even that's too unbearable for me, but it's a humid 90 degrees. I was in Phoenix, AZ a few years ago and it was 120 degrees and even that felt slightly more tolerable to me. Looking at retiring in Maine as one of my options. It's December now as I type this and it's a nice comfortable 30 degrees outside and no real snow yet to speak of other than a quick dusting the other day. You couldn't pay me to move to Florida.

Winter weather varies dramatically depending on the region. Northern counties and Southwestern PA get snow in annual amount mentioned, however Southcentral and Eastern PA see snow sporadically and in much lesser amounts. Harrisburg area for example got less than six inches total in the winter of 2023. And Erie, right on the lake, can be like Buffalo at times.

Stay away from southeastern PA. Move west of Harrisburg. Most of the counties outside major cities are reasonably priced to live in, the traffic isn’t too bad and yeah, you can find work. The great thing about PA is if you love nature, a slower pace of life, not much traffic. It’s easy to get places and not hard to survive, you’ll love PA. Anywhere near Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, or Philly and it’s pointless. The country is where it’s at

about wildlife: Wasps are also common, especially in spring or summer, they stung me twice and my mother once and I absolutely hate them. THERE WAS A HIVE INSIDE OF THE CLOSET WHEN WE JUST MOVED IN. Weather-wise we get both the best and the worst of all seasons. The biggest complaints are that spring and fall are both usually very short, summer is hot and sticky and winter lasts many months from November through April with some snow and cold but huge servings of dark, cold, rainy, dreary weather. That's the biggest drawback. Yes, we have amazing fall and spring days and a lot of cold but sunny and nice winter days but winter comes and never leaves.

This real estate agent nailed the description of our Commonwealth perfectly. Although why bring up gas taxes if it doesn't affect the price of our gasoline. Huge turnoff. Gas prices change from county to county too. The cities are really hot & humid, I moved to the mountains and we didn't use air conditioning the first couple years. The locals were complaining how hot it was and I just kept looking at them wondering what they were talking about. Yeah, there's deer and black bears. We have seen many black bears. I love when they walk down my street at night. Deer are all over Pennsylvania, even the city my friend. I'm born, raised Philadelphia and there are still woods close by. I loved to ride my horse at night through Pennypack Park to the bar where we would all meet. That's all gone now though at one time Philadelphia was a huge horse city from Fairmount Park. Not sure if our police are still out of Fairmount Park or not. The people are more real than other states. Unless of course you hit a psychopath but that's up to you to rely on your gut feelings wherever you live. This is not a Stepford State but some counties dispersed throughout maybe.

I agree about the weather. I love in SE PA where the weather isn't as bad as other regions of the state. And I was surprised when a guy from the west coast told me he was surprised how green it is here. Yes, deer can be a problem particularly during rutting season. It's not hard to get liquor. I only drink the occasional beer. Where I live people can be standoffish. Poconos are great for a low key rustic experience. I'll add there are no taxes on SS benefits nor pensions.

This video is pretty accurate. Real estate is EXTREMELY hyper-local. What's considered a dump in the State College could be a mansion in a rural area. The east coast stigma is very prevalent in Philly and the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area, but not all over the state. Economically, the best areas are Pittsburgh, and basically Harrisburg to Philly is like one big city. The Lancaster area just keeps growing. Obviously, the suburbs of Philly, but avoid inner-city Philly! Property taxes tend to be high too, but PA public school teachers are paid very well so...... Winter is generally worse in the northern part of the state. Temperatures in the summer can reach as high as 100, or have a heat index above 100, and Temperatures in the winter can be zero or below and the windchill sometimes can be a several degrees below zero

I see your pic of a huge white building on S. Allen St. called Zeno’s Pub which is in State College. State College is a great place to visit and live-being a college town there’s upmarket stores and notable places to visit. My grandfather built a nice cabin in the 1960’s on Nittany Mountain. Had a number of great Christmases there in the 1970’s, was beautiful when it snowed and a layer of ice covered everything. I’m from western Pa born in Butler, grade school in East Brady, junior and senior high in Oil City in the late 60’s early 70’s. Living in eastern Pa now is not too bad but some places I wouldn’t want to touch because like everywhere else there’s crime. Up until the 1960's, Pittsburgh had the Pittsburgh Stock Market. Up until Pittsburgh had the 3rd most corporate headquarters in the country. After the collapse of the Steel industrial, Pittsburgh has lost most of it industrial capacity, but gained clean air. These Corporate giants left behind many beautiful former headquarters buildings. Correct, we have liquor stores aka state stores… the only place to buy hard liquor in the state. Most other states sell it in gas stations, grocery stores, etc.

As a lifelong resident of Western Pennsylvania I completely agree with everything you’ve said here. However, on the wildlife topic, deer are becoming more and more common in suburban areas and even in the city parks around Pittsburgh. With less natural forage available in suburban areas, the deer will willingly consume your flowers and shrubs. Also, missing from your wildlife warnings are the abundant wild turkeys. These are large birds that can cause tremendous damage to your automobile in a collision. With all that said, I would not consider living anywhere else.
